G5 Laptops Questions asked

Resolved Question: Would upgrading my RAM by 512MB really make a difference?

I have the first generation iMac G5 with the PowerPC 1.8GHz processor. Currently with 1.5GBs of RAM right now, max is 2GBs. I run CS3 and Lightroom 2 a lot on the computer and it's slow. I'm wondering if it would make a difference when editing pictures using those programs. I have a webinar coming up where I need to multi-task - skype, video capture AND having CS3 open. I'm not even sure if the iMac would be able to keep up. Upgrade by 512MBs or buy a new iMac? If 512MBs really makes a difference, enough to hold out on a new iMac right now, that would be great. I'd love to get my PC laptop junked out to have that $ go towards a new iMac but I can't wait forever! more

Resolved Question: Is a new Macbook Pro faster than my Power PC G5 desktop?

Hi, At the moment i am running a dual 2gig/4gig ram/HD with 7200 rpm/ ibm chip set Power PC (G5) desktop. (Pre intell) I was thinking of buying a new Macbook Pro (Traveling Overseas). I was told that because of the architecture and layout design of the power pc desktop a laptop may not be as fast. (Even though the specs are better). I use Logic and want to able to run lots of tracks, plug ins like massive and east by west. I guess my question is will say a macbook pro 2.66 with the correct config be faster than a g5 dual 2.0 Any help would be great :) more

Voting Question: Do I need both a router AND a modem for broadband?

Have 2 macs, one a laptop with built in modem and wireless card. The other is a g5 tower. I want to use the G5 in a hard-wire connection to my phoneline and then use the wireless upstairs. I have bought a router but everything I read seems to suggest I need both a modem and a router. Isn't the router a modem? Can't I just wire up from the wall to the router then to the G5? If a modem is needed, where in the chain does it go and what specs will I need? Thanx in advance more

Resolved Question: Confusion over Movie Maker, Quicktime and MPEG-4 files?

Okay, my little brothers and I were messing around and decided to make an 'iCarly' style video. I used my G5 iPod to film it, intending to use Windows Movie Maker to edit the clips and add any special effects. I've used Movie Maker before, but not for this purpose, and I've taken video's on my iPod before, but never uploaded them to my laptop. I checked all the video's (they automatically opened in Quicktime) and played fine. I then started on all the titles in Movie Maker, added background music...etc. The tried to add the first clip, only to find that Movie Maker can't read MPEG-4 files. Unfortunately, I'm no computer geek, and have no idea how to get around this problem. And IT Tech at school once showed me how to convert files, but I've completely forgotten. Anyone know a simple method of fixing this? Much thanks, Elle more

Resolved Question: External disc drive not working-Mac powerbook G4?

So the internal disc drive in my Powerbook G4 quit working. The cheapest course of action was to buy an external disc drive. I ordered this: USB CD-ROM Apple iBook G4 Powerbook G4 MAC MINI IMAC G5 from ebay it says 4:support Windows98SE/ME/2000/XP/Vista 5:Support Mac OS 8.6 or more higher So I was told it would be compatible with my laptop. When I received it the instruction manual was for Windows. I thought I would try it anyway and I really can't install the software disc that came with it because it needs to be read by Windows. I copied all the files that popped up when I inserted the disc into my Applications folder thinking maybe that would work. When i insert any other disc though it pops right out, it won't read anything. So I think my question is, will this even work with my computer, if so how do I install it? Thank you very much!! more

Voting Question: Trade my MacBook 13 inch for 2 Toshiba Satellite laptops and an iMac G5?

So this guy that i met on craigslist through posting an ad offering my laptop up for trade is offering me 2 Toshiba Sattelite laptops. 1 grey and 1 black and an iMac G5 desktop plus cash to upgrade the hard drive in the grey Toshiba laptop. This sounds like an amazing deal, does it sound fair for my side? Everything works fine and my MacBook just needs a new snow leopard install. Also its the 2007 model. Thanks for looking. more

Resolved Question: Desktop PC with Windows 7 and Hackintosh (Snow Leopard OS X) - help!?

OK, I'm looking into building an all-in-one computer for at home, as at the moment I have a £800 HP Vista laptop for school/general use (DONT GET ONE - HP ARE RUBBISH) and an old imac G5 running 10.3.5 (I don't know exactly what animal that is..) for my home studio. I intend to start building a powerful desktop PC, but because of the nature of the music production tools I use I'd need multiple operating systems, or multiple computers. In short, I'd need Snow Leopard (the latest Mac OS) for general recording, MIDI, etc, a much older operating system (WIN 98, or the mac equivilant age) to run the Korg Oasys PCI card, and Windows XP/7 for general use. As i'm building the computer (ish) myself, would it be possible to just install three hard drives (maybe just use some external firewire ones) and have one OS on each drive, then at startup select which one I want to use? I have no idea if its possible, any tips would be great. Also I've looked into getting OSX running on PC, and there is a method using flash drives that I think is pretty easy, so dont worry about that part ;) more

Resolved Question: Apple airport express question..?

Hi, Im new with Macs and I just got my hands on an old 2004 G5 tower. The tower is in my room which has no direct connection to a broadband ethernet. I have a PC laptop which I can get the internet on via wireless. We have a generic netopia router downstairs. I was told that if I buy an airport express I can use this as a wireless receiver for the G5 in my room but im unsure. Is this possible? And if not what do I need in order to get a wireless connection for the G5..? Many Thanks more

Voting Question: OS X 10.3.9 Problems?

I just bought an old desktop G5 that was in excellent condition. I wiped the HD clean and installed the only copy of OS X I had, which was 10.3, and I can't even do simple things. The only current browser for 10.3 is Opera and it has its limitations. Safari 4 is not even available for 10.3. I bought a brand new keyboard and mouse from the Apple store for the G5 and they are being glitchy. Half of the flash players on the web say my OS does not meet minimum system requirements. Is 10.3 just too old to be running these days? Can I run Leopard on my G5? I see people walking around with old G4 laptops all the time. This G5 should be able to handle the simple tasks of day to day computing. more

Voting Question: does my 1 year old laptop use all of our household dsl bandwith watching hulu?

my girlfriends mother plays wow and raids constantly. she is running a g5 mac with a huge screen and is connected directly. I have a toshiba satellite L305 and my girlfriend has a 4-5 year old mac mini. Mine and my girlfriends computers use wireless to connect. Lately her mother has been saying that my laptop is the cause of the loss of bandwith but the most extreme thing I do is watch videos on hulu. Sometimes I download movies at the same time but I cannot imagine that would take up more than wow especially on a screen as large as hers( 40 inch widescreen) Could it be because I have a PC and the other computers in the house are MACs? A guy from the Mac store came out and told her mother that if there was one computer on the network with an old modem than it would bog the whole network down. If anyone can help me it would be nice to be able to get her to stop blaming me for her gaming interuptions and with the wow community, the game is life and not bieng able to play would be very bd.(lol) more

Voting Question: Issues printing from my computer?

My family relocated a printer from one computer to mine (iMac G5). It is an HP Photosmart C6280 All-In-One. This is not a "new" printer, it is just new to my desk. I connected the power plug and connected to the computer via USB, installed the appropriate driver from hp.com, and decided to test the printer out. When I tried to print, it didn't work. The printer utility registered the task (it said "Document 1" under the task list) but the printer didn't do anything. When a laptop was connected to the printer, it worked just fine and I was able to print things out right from the computer. Does anyone know what's wrong with my computer and/or printer and how to fix it? more

Resolved Question: Re-asking... can I run this?

Yes, I know I know, use willitrun.com... But I have a Dell Inspiron, just got it 6 months ago, willitrun.com says it is perfect except that the processor is 2.0 with Vista and it has to be 2.5 with Vista or 2.0 with XP. Do you think that it might still run, just slowly/poorly? Also I have a Mac G5 with loads and loads of space (it's a company computer, shhhh) but it only has OS 10.4.11.. which is also below the requirements.. again, will it run at all (just poorly) or not? FYI Right now my laptop will run Sims 2 and all the expansion packs, but not the stuff packs. Thanks! more
