Nokia plans more phones, netbook By PETER ZSCHUNKE (AP) – 18 hours ago STUTTGART, Germany — Nokia Corp., the world's biggest maker of cell phones, unveiled new models Wednesday that boast more music features and mesh better with Facebook and the Finnish company's upcoming netbook. The announcements are part of Nokia's attempt to branch out into new markets, such as wireless online services. "We are not on the defensive, we are on the offensive," Nokia executive vice president Anssi Vanjoki said at the two-day Nokia World event in Germany. The Espoo, Finland-based company said it made a deal with Facebook, the wildly popular social networking site, that will let users of some its handsets update their location and status directly to the site through a Nokia Ovi account. The feature will premier on the new N97 mini phone that was also introduced Wednesday and will retail for euro450 ($644.13) without a contract when it starts shipping in October. "People want to bring their physical and online worlds together via the Internet. The Nokia N97 mini is designed for this new social Internet and to help navigate people and places," said Jonas Guest, vice president of Nokia Nseries. Nokia has been the top handset maker since 1998 but has gradually expanded to include online services, such as downloads of music, games, maps and the fast transfer of photos and video, especially as markets have become saturated. It has estimated that the global online market will reach euro100 billion by 2010. Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said his company's cooperation with former rival Microsoft, and entering deals like the one with Facebook, heralds a new strategy. "Strategy changes the whole time," he said in an interview with Finnish broadcaster YLE. "It mustn't be something we can't touch as the environment changes, the competition changes." Nokia offered more details about its new laptop, dubbed the Nokia Booklet 3G, which will ship in the fourth quarter of 2009 with Windows 7 and retail for euro575. Hello, When I plug my MP3 player or GPS device into my laptop's USB port (any of the 4 USB ports) the device is not recognized. In other words, nothing happens. I can't transfer songs, charge either device, etc. I have done a lot of searching for a solution. I have tried going into Device Manager and disabling, uninstalling, etc. I have even done it in Safe Mode. Things still aren't working. Maybe my laptop is history?? This USB issue seems fairly common based on the number of search results I found. Any magic solutions? Thanks a lotI am familiar with the sounds you are referring to, but I no longer hear them when I plug in. Sometimes the USB icon appears in the tray. When I open it, it say something like "there is a power surge failure error" or something. I do see the USBin device manager. I work in a job that visits 100 plus addresses a day and need something a little more powerful then the standard off the shelf GPS system. I want to input all the post codes and have the software return the best route, amongst other things. I have a Laptop and know I'll need a GPS receiver (Ebay sourced no doubt), but need to know of some titles. Please Help By more powerful, I mean I need the ability to enter 100+ Postcodes from the comfort of a Keyboard and the software needs to be able to optimise the route, that is place them in the best possible order that will result in the least mileage, of fastest time. I would also like it if the ability to hook up to Excel was there too, but not essential. Standard off the shelf stuff is limited as to number of stops and doesn't optimise. more

I've been thinking about alternative ways of tracking a potentially lost/stolen laptop...I've been having trouble with Computrace Lojack for Laptops (they're working on a fix) being incompatible with some of my software and causing Windows errors. What about using a GPS enabled cellphone to track the computer? Verizon has the Chaperone Child/Parent service - maybe there's a way to get a really cheap/small phone and fit it inside the computer somewhere...tie in a modified charger to the laptop's charger port and it could use it's own battery for power and the laptop's power as a regenerative power supply to charge the cellphone when the laptop is plugged in, most cellphones will operate for nearly a week idle on a charge...and laptops usually need charging daily. Thoughts? Good? Bad? I suppose the next step could be a ExpressCard or PCMCIA card that spoofs a micro-drive (memory and all) and has a hidden GPS transciever - maybe even use it as a backup memory and then you could use the cellular/GPS transciever to recover your important data remotely. Or has this been done somewhere? more

Resolved Question: transferring data to and from a handheld Garmin GPS?

Hi - I have had a Garmin e-trex venture GPS for about a year, but my laptop doesn't have one of the serial ports needed to connect the cable which came with the GPS. I finally got round to buying a cable which will connect it via a USB port...but now I cant figure out how on earth to transfer the data over! Please can someone help me? Should I have got some software with my GPS for this purpose? The owners manual is virtually useless. Thanks. more

I want to buy gps software for truck drivers and the one that I found requieres the following: Windows 2000, ME, XP, VISTA( I have XP) 400 MHz processor or better 128 MB RAM 16X CD-ROM 250 MB available hard disc space Built-in Bluetooth or a Bluetooth adapter that enables Bluetooth connectivity (I have it) Speakers and sound card required for voice technology Microphone required for voice recognition *Requires a 32 bit Laptop I have 522,608 of physical memory available. Would my T43 work with the software? The software I found is the CoPilot CPT9US-BT Truck Laptop 9 Bluetooth. Thank you so very much for your help. more
