I need a dedicated graphics card to play most of my games that I had on my now dead laptop I bought this computer and its very good apart from the graphics so I want to buy a graphics card however i don't want to have to buy a new power supply to power the graphics card as Im on a budget and don't have a lot of money to pay for all that and i only know how to install a graphics card. Open Question: Computer hangs briefly every 1-2 minutes?

Hello I have a dell latitude e4300 laptop, windows vista, since I started using WD MyBook 500gb via ESata connection (built in in the laptops connectors) my computer started hanging for brief 1-2 second periods every 1-2 minutes when the esata drive is not connected. I have tried to trace this problem to a specific application that may be trying to access the drive when its not connected but had no luck so far using the resource monitor, also i have rolled out heating issues that might be laptop fan related, these hangs only occur whenever that ESata drive is disconnected. i am using the drive as backup. I have also installed avast pro and spy bot search and destroy for threat analysis and have come up with no results. my best guess is that some application or service maybe indexing is trying to access the external esata drive even when its not connected, oh and shutting down the computer and turning it back on doesn't help. how do i trace the source of the problem and find find out / fix what's causing it? more

How do I make a working usb extension cord to extend 16 feet to a usb camera to connect to my computer? I have ran a wire with a male usb end on it and a female connecting end at the other end, through my floor to a room below me. everything is wired correctly with the four stranded wire it needs to work.. all i did was cut a small one foot usb extension in half and put a 16 foot four stranded wire to bind the gap in the two ends of the usb wire.. If this is wired correctly, would my camera work to run it on my macbook? i have a built in i sight on this macbook and the software for this laptop is 10.5.8... if i connect my usb camera into my laptop, and turn on photobooth, it will pick up the video live from the camera instead of the built in i sight, and if i unplug the camera, it goes to the i sight... now all i have done is basically put a 16 wire in between the usb port on my laptop to my camera and it wont work... I know it is wired corectly.. but when i plug the camera in 16 feet away, it wont work, though it will light up for a second (the light on it). also i have put a flash drive on the other end of the wire and it has worked.. i think i might have power on the other end but maybe the data is not being transferred.... i know they make 15 foot usb extenders and they work but why cant i run the camera that i know works but wont seem to work on the other end of this wire?? please help.. Would soldering these wires make a much better connection even if they are twisted together? would a smaller gauge wire work better? more

Resolved Question: How much is this laptop worth?

Boxed. Nvidia 9600M-GT, 2.0 GHZ, 4 GIG DDR2 RAM, Genuine Windows 7 installed, operating system and drivers are backed up on a 20 GIG partition. As good as new 9 months old, will run all games and has built in subwoofer, maintained by studying computer science student. I am buying a VAIO thus selling my Acer. The only issue is that the CD-DVD-RW drive is faulty (Sometimes it works and other times it doesn't), so I will be throwing in an external USB DVD-RW. It also includes Windows 7 disk. I have been told it will cost me £35 to fix but can't be bothered. Lowest I will accept will be £250 to clear my debt. There is absolutely nothing else wrong with this compter, it runs much greater than before with Windows 7 installed. My husband and I dated many years ago and ended up splitting up because he always put his friends and work before me. We got back together a few years ago and ended up getting married. Before we got married he told me he wanted a child and asked me if I would be willing to have a baby(I have children from a previous marriage) and I told him that I would. We now have a beautiful baby that is 1 year old. My issue is that he is once again putting work before me and our baby. My husband has probably 100 sick days built up that he has never taken, plus as of now 14 furlough days that he has never taken. I am very stressed dealing with a baby and trying to start a business, and have asked him if he could please just take half a day off to spend some time with the baby and to help me with this business. He is able to take a day off, but he flat out refuses. He is also very secretive about many things, and that bothers me also. When he is at home, he is either watching tv or on his laptop working on non-work related projects. I feel like a single parent and it saddens me that he doesn't make spending time with our baby a priority. Any thoughts on my situation would be appreciated. more

I was planning to purchase the Logitech Illuminated, but I've been reading that is has some boot issues and some issue with key blocking. As for the boot issue, everyone is being vague about what is affected. I hear a lot of complaint with HP and Dell being associated, but some people are saying that it's a problem with "all new systems". Well, I am planning to build a new computer and can't find any information as to whether this will affect my new system or not. And the key block is an issue with typing too fast, but I can't seem to find out how fast is too fast, so Iono if this'll affect me or not. I don't want to spend 75$ on a keyboard without knowing these things, so I am wondering if anyone knows a keyboard like this, but without (or as close to 'without' as possible) issues. Resolved Question: Do you think I should purchase the m11x based on my needs?

I really know nothing about computer parts, and I have been reading as much as I could about the m11x to see if it is what I want, and these are the issues that are still stumping me. 1) I would really love to play the newest games to come out on my computer for at least the next 6 years or so at medium settings with 40ish fps and was wondering if I could achieve that with this setup I currently have planned: the Intel® Core™2 Duo SU7300 1.3GHz (3MB Cache), 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 800MHz, and the 500GB SATAII 7,200RPM. This comes to about 1069$ with my student discount. 2) Also, is the CPU in the m11x worse than my core 2 duo T5750 @ 2.00 ghz. I am asking this because I do not know much about computer parts, I'm assuming the m11x's is worse because less ghz means slower (at least what I was led to believe). But I find this hard to believe because I purchased my laptop almost two years ago, I would think that the processor technology would be at the point where even an 11" laptop would have a far stronger CPU than my current Toshiba satellite-A305 that I got for about 800$. 3) Also, will the relatively old CPU on the m11x ever hinder the notebooks ability to play games in the future, as it will not meet minimum requirements? I have been reading a lot about the C2Duo vs the new i3,i5,i7 series, and was not entirely sure if it would be worth waiting for the m11x to have built in nethalem if all I really care about is gaming (no video editing). 4) Also, will the fact that this notebook is constructed with plastic ever cause the computer to warp? I have heard about prior issues like this in plastic builds, and more specifically alienware computers warping their shapes. 5) And, one final note, will the price of the new nethalem processors quickly drop, maybe so much so that if I wait until April, I could get the m11x with an i3 for the same price as I am paying now? (~1069$) 6) If i decide to buy the current setup I have planned, will I be able to easily upgrade my CPU to the nethalem series? How much will that usually cost, if I have alienware do it, without considering the price of the processor. 7) Is it risky for me to buy the first generation of m11x as there may be inherent problems in the design? Is this common for first generation computers, I know it's common for consoles (i.e. red ring of death). Please leave any insight you may have on these issues. Thanks! more

Voting Question: Mass effect problems on my PC?

Im having problems playing Mass Effect I installed the game and everything seems okay but, when i click on the icon the menu shows up and says Play,Download Content ext. The game is store bought, not from Steam or any other place where you can download the game online. The problem is when i click play the screen turns black like if its starting the game but then quickly disappears and saids ''Mass Effect has stopped working'' and in the bottom it says check online for solutions and i clicked it and nothing happens The first time i clicked that it took me to a patch for mass effect that i had to download(i did) and still the same problem. I noticed that the installation process only took around 30 minutes or so, i have installed other games (Oblivion, WoW, the Sims 3) and they took over 3-7 hours to download.Im afraid that if i uninstall it and re-install it will use one more out of the 3 chances i get to install Mass Effect(i think) I really need your help! So i'd build the box camera, and in the box camera i would put in a projector, so that i would link the projector to a laptop and play either a powerpoint presentation or iMovie presentation giving information about the history, change, and innovation of photography. So that is my original idea. I was also thinking i could use a tri-fold board and do like most projects and put pictures and captions and show firsts in photography and how it has changed and innovated. I was ALSO thinking for the actual presentation, you know how on like mac they have the photo booth app? maybe i could have a mac laptop beside my project and allow people to take pictures, and make their pictures into black and white, sepia, and normal (color) so they can see the difference in each photo as the history of photography they couldn't just select the type it innovated into changing from those three types. OR i could do all three!!! which i would really like to do but do you think it's a little too much?? So i'd build my old fashion box camera out of wood, and put it on a tripod and the projector inside the projector could project the powerpoint/iMovie onto a screen and beside it would be the tri-fold board with displayed information and i could have a real old fashioned camera then and arrow pointing to maybe a film camera then another arrow pointing to a digital camera to show the change in them, then the laptop connected to the model of an old fashioned box camera would be where they sit and take pictures and the old fashioned box camera i'd build would project the pictures they take!! What do you think? is it good? bad? too much? any suggestions?? more

I have been trying to connect my xbox 360 to XBOX Live via my laptop, because I don't want to pay $100 for the wireless adapter. I have the xbox connected to the laptop via an Ethernet cable, and the laptop connected to my wireless internet. I have insured that neither connection is using ICS, and I know how to create a network bridge. However, when I try to create the bridge, I get the "An unexpected error has occurred while configuring the network bridge" error message which Microsoft, in all their wisdom, saw fit to program into the OS so that it wouldn't give you ANY detail as to the cause of the error, nothing, just "It didn't work, sorry"... Anyway, Can someone with a bit more knowledge than myself in these matters please educate me as to how I need to go about resolving this problem so that I can build the network bridge between my LAN and Wireless networks, thus connecting my xbox to XBOX Live through my laptop? To build my home network, my router has a desktop PC connected with LAN cable and 100Mbps LAN card, and a laptop connected via WiFi @ 54Mbps. I run periodic HDD backups between the PC's (i.e. backup the desktop files onto the laptop HDD, and viceversa). Thing is, the transfer speed on WiFi even in the best of conditions, seem to top out and remain constant at 20-22Mbps....almost as if there was a physical limit to this. The router is within 10-15 feet of the WiFi PC. Any ideas how I can tweak settings on this router to maximize the speed further? I'm pretty certain router bandwidth is the bottleneck, since the transfer speed is about the same transfering files between desktop and PC, as I get downloading files from the internet on either PC. How do I throttle or tweak this? more

Voting Question: My friend is having a problem with her Netbook, phoenix failsafe password?

She has had her Netbook for about 2 months. And bought it at a place called Future Shop. Her problem is, when she tried turning on her laptop, it will ask her for her fail safe password. And she never set one up. She tried returning it to the store to see if they could help but they said someone setup a password. I know nothing of Failsafe and how it works. hello i have a Toshiba Windows 7 laptop built with in with a webcam. Whenever i try to take a picture in the light the picture comes out dim and blotchy. I changed the setting to better lighting but that doesnt really help either. It doesnt let me change the photo into black and white or serpia or anything like that. I only have like 9 frames which are shitty. Also can i change the camera settings into mirror or fisheye or anything like that for taking a photo or recording a video? The picture do not come out very good at all. Please answer and thank youi just got this computer on christmas and i cant like download any applications or anything like that? So i'm having issues with my wireless working on my sony vaio laptop. The wireless card is built in, there is a little switch to turn it on, it is in the on position but there is no light anymore and when I turn it on a window pops up showing that Wireless LAN power is on status is disconnected and the signal strength is none. The only way my internet works on my laptop is if i directly connect it to the router. Other laptops in the household work so there is nothing wrong with the router. Would i have to go and get my laptop fixed by a professional? or is this a problem I can fix and if so how? more

Voting Question: How did you figure out which type of engineer to be?

I've always been the type of kid to take something apart and either put it back together or make something completely new out of it. Ever since 2nd grade I've known I wanted to be some kind of engineer but never really sure what kind, and with college I will need a declared major before I know it. Im very interested in technology and "gadgets" if you want to say that. Ideally I would work somewhere as part of a team to help create all sorts of new things. I would love to be able to walk into best buy and be able to say that's my T.V. or Laptop. I know i can't create the whole thing like i want too, but I do want a constantly changing environment, where I am part of a hands on building team and not necessarily always behind a desk. I guess I'm just looking for guidance from mechanical, electrical, software, computer, or really any type of engineer, or anyone who has been through this decision making process...
