Resolved Question: Is this laptop good enough for web browsing?

Someone at my office is selling laptops. I am assuming it's refurbished. I'm looking for something just for e-mail and surfing the web, chatting, etc. A friend of mine (a computer tech) told me the system wouldn't be very fast and isn't worth the $125 asking price. Wouldn't it be good enough for basic chatting, web surfing and e-mailing? Voting Question: Is my RAM compatible with my Laptop? If so, what's the best way to install it?

I have a IBM thinkpad 600x.. I know, lol old. So, I bought some ram online (about 512). 2 sticks of 256 a piece. I try putting it in and powering on, I get like a buzz noise. Take it out, put in the old one and it booted right up. So, I took out the existing and put BOTH new sticks in. Same buzz noise and never left the main page that displays the memory amount. What do I do? Is my memory compatible? What am I doing wrong? more

Resolved Question: Windows XP too fast for Thinkpad for 98?

I have a IBM thinkpad 600x. The laptop is designed for windows 98. I have windows xp running on it The CMOS battery is daed and i am in the process of replacing it, When i first got it 2 yeas ago it was quite fast. Now it runs extremely slow and there are no programs or applications on this computer. Does the dead CMOS battery have something to do with it? Will XP run faster again upon replacing the CMOS battery? more

I am currently using an old IBM Thinkpad laptop, the 600x series. I'm currently running XP, but with such an old computer (12G hard drive, 700ishMB RAM) I've been thinking about installing Ubuntu or Xubuntu instead. I have an external hard drive that I run extra programs off of and to hold all of my data, and have tried to get rid of everything I don't need on the laptop to clear as much space as possible, but still no improvement. It was my grandparent's so I think there is still alot of hidden errors in XP that are causing problems? I have used Ubuntu before and I really liked the interface. Should I make the choice to switch to Ubuntu or Xbuntu? Would a OS change make a noticible difference in the speed of my computer? thank you!  more

Resolved Question: IBM Thinkpad 600X sound card drivers? (XP)?

I've been fixing up an old Thinkpad 600X for a friend. She wanted to use iTunes on the laptop, but it came with Windows 98SE, and that is incompatible. So I took the laptop, and installed a) more RAM and b) Windows XP. Everything works ok, except for the sound. The motherboard sound works, but the soundcard doesn't. I Beleive it's a "Crystal SoundFusion" soundcard. I've scoured the web and haven't had any luck finding XP drivers. I forced some windows2000 drivers last night, and that screwed the laptop as it is now saying "irql_not_less_or_equal" So i'll re-install windows tonight. Is there any 'legacy' drivers i can get from MS or anything that'll get this soundcard working? I tried windows update, but that couldn't help either. Any help please?!Bob, thanks for your input, but the problem wasn't that the sound was muted, it was that XP didn't have the correct drivers. Re-installing XP using the full installation corrected the problem :) more

Resolved Question: Any suggestions on fixing up an IBM Thinkpad 600x?

It works fine(other than the 8611 error I get because the little mouse thing isnt working...but i use a regular mouse). I'm interested in pepping it up so that i buy music online and be able to watch videos. I am able to do this now but the videos buffer at a slow rate and if I put a music program(like itunes) and download music i probably run the risk of crashing it). Do you tech savvy people have any suggestions as to what thing i need to buy to make this older laptop run smoother and maybe a little faster? more

Resolved Question: Laptop Charger Compatability?

My latpop, Compaq Evo N610c, no longer charges. I have not a clue ot if it is the laptop or charger that is broken, but the charger beeps when it is plugged in to the wall. It's input is 100-240v and output is 18.5v. I have another charger for a IBM Thinkpad 600x that has an input of 100-240v and 16v output. Can I use the IBM thinkpad charger on the Compaq Evo with out blowing up or ruining something? more

ok, so, I gave my IBM ThinkPad 600X to my dad several months because the power supply and motherboard on his emachines desktop died. It had 256 MB of memory when I gave it to him (upgraded from 128 MB by yours truly). Recently, I wanted to max it out to 512 MB. So I bought a PC 133 256 MB module from Crucial. The manual says PC 100, but supposedly PC 133 will downscale. Anyway, the laptop only recognizes 64 MB from the new module, for a total of 320 MB!!!!!! I tried emailing crucial, no response. Ultimately I tried buying a PC100 module from Kingston, same result. So I don't think it's the speed. Is there a setting in the BIOS to tweak???? some advise please! more

I woke up one morning to a big bad fire. With my first reaction being to throw a bucket of water on the fire. I quickly realized (as I was throwing my bucket) that my laptop was in the way. I could say that the laptop is gone and I will probably be buying a new one. But for the sake of being a guy and boys will play with their toys. Should anyone know where the fuse is located I'm wondering if I can just change the fuse and the power supply to get the laptop running. (Yes I'm aware that there might be some 'damage' and things 'might not work'). And control + F5 at startup isn't a way to fix it because it doesn't power up.Your absolultey correct. Typing underwater can be problematic. Will my laptop learn how to swim? Probably not. Its going to have to work or learn how to bungie jump with no cord. more
