Voting Question: Is HP G60-530US a good laptop?

I have been looking for a good but cheap 15-16" laptop (not a netbook), hopefully with a built-in webcam and a mic, with Windows 7 Home Premium in it and at least 3GB of RAM and 160 Storage Capacity. Hey i bought a laptop 2 weeks ago and it was sent monday it got from china to alska and went through a clearance delay for 2 days and it was finally sent to Newark NJ at 1:25 AM but the fedex tracking number said Arrived at FedEx location. Newark is about 6-7 hours away from my house so its an easy drive to make it here by 4:30 when i think fedex stops delivery i may be wrong. The laptop I have right now doesn't really work for me. It's a 17 inch HP with 1 gig that BARELY runs Vista, it has a 1.6 GHz processor, integrated graphics, a 2 cell battery and a 160gig hard drive. I use my computer mainly for school, and if i use a flash drive to boost system memory it does the job fine. I mainly use my laptop because while i do have a desktop, it's 6 years old. I was looking into getting a netbook, which after seeing how little they can do i decided to buy a new laptop. The ones in my price range (about $500) didn't really impress me. However, after earning $500 in rebates and coupons, I can get a 16 inch laptop with a 2.2 GHz processor, 4 gigs of ram, a 320 gig harddrive, blu-ray player, thumbprint reader, 12 cell battery, an NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics card with 512k memory, and an HD screen all for about $830. I don't need all that because it's stuff I don't use, but I'd definitely start using it if I had all that. Especially because my current battery lasts only 30 minutes before dying. I know that's cheap for what it is, and it would be nice because this would blow my desktop so out of the water that I could just get rid of it and free up space. I'm debating whether or not I get this. My parents gave me $300 to save for a PC, and my friend is willing to give me $250 for this. That leaves me to scrounge up about $300 myself, and while I can get the money, I'd empty my savings account, and my job is only giving me 5 hours a week. If I wait till, say christmas, I could save up some money and not be flat broke by the end of the deal and stressing because I can't even afford a comic book, and maybe even spend just as much and get a better machine, or get a similar machine for less. However, around that time I might not be able to get such a good deal, as the blu-ray player, thumbprint reader, hard drive, 4 gig memory, and HD screen were all free because of an HP clearance sale. If I do wait I can earn more money, but my friend won't be interested in buying my laptop for $250, and while the price may go down, with all the extra bells and whistles that make me like it in the first place, I really doubt it. So, what should I do? My coupon expires tomorrow. Do I jump on the bandwagon and buy what will end up being abuot a $2500 computer for $800 that I do have but REALLY shouldn't spend, or wait till i have money and hope a better deal comes up?I was looking to buy a new LAPTOP. not a netbook. more

I sighed heavily at my cell’s blank screen, Chris Drew smiling back at me like he was mocking my loneliness. It was a Saturday, and yes, I was very alone. I was at the mall, after I supposedly thought someone was going to come but ended up going off on my own. I hit up Spencer’s first, I love the Playboy bunny things, No I wasn’t a slut, even if I wanted too I really couldn’t. Let’s just say I wasn’t the skinniest or prettiest thing out there. I guess I was pretty, in my own way, and I definitely had a hella rad style. My hair was long brown, with extreme layers , and side-swept bangs. I had brown eyes to me always looked glossy, and pale pink lips lined with picture perfect teeth. I got bored with Spencer’s quickly, without friends the store really wasn’t the same. I moped to Hot Topic, not really excited about that store either. They always seem to have the same things when I go. Today was a slow day the store only had a couple of people there. One of the guys waved at me, and I smiled back. They know me here, I’ve been shopping here since I last year. Okay, well this would be the start to one of the stories. In the others there would be more characters. Please give me any critic you have. I walked through the old front door that had been the main entrance to my wonderfully crumbling abode since the 1800’s. It was old, it was creepy, it was the big old house on top of the street that kids insist on trying to break into on Halloween. They never make it to this old door. Sam make’s sure of that. No one gets past the property line without Samantha’s clearance. The huge pitch-black dog had the appearance of a hell hound to those who are stupid enough to believe in such things. But to others she was just one hell of a scary dog. I chuckled a little under my frozen breath. Black lab my ass. Sam was more of a 3 way mix between a Tasmanian devil, a Saint Bernard, and a werewolf. I slammed the door and woke a teenage boy that must have been 6’ 6”. I screeched for T to get his ass down here. Within seconds my younger cousin was standing front and center. “Who is that? Why was he asleep on the couch?” I questioned. “Uh, well this is Jake… and he needed a place to stay so I told him he could hang with me for a little bit. Addie, what’s up? You said that I could have people stay over whenever, didn’t you?” T asked with a confused expression. “Yes, I said that but you, my dear, have very selective hearing. I also said that you can have people stay over whenever you please as long as you call my and tell me in advance. I do not appreciate coming home to a six and a half foot tall guy asleep on my couch.” I explained. “I’m six foot five and at times I’m asleep on your couch.” T said with a fake concerned expression. With a glare, I walked into the kitchen. “Where are you going? Are you just going to ignore Jake?” T asked. “That was the plan.” I said while opening a can of Mountain Dew. I was going to need a little extra caffeine to do put on the right show. Dad was coming up for the weekend and bringing some guy who works with him. That means I would have to be very energetic and crazy. It typically works. First impressions are crucial and this guy met my dad first, so I have a little bit to work past. I would also have to explain why the hell Jake was here. Did I really know why he was here? No, but that doe sn’t mean dad will leave me be about it. I would have to devise a brilliant lie to tell him about why he was here. “Fun” I muttered. I have to be crazy, carefree, and lie. Fan-freaking-tastic. “Hey, when’s Uncle Collin getting here?” T yelled from the living room. He would rather yell then walk under 10 feet. I’m not one to complain though, seeing as I was going to yell back. “Around five is what he told me but you know dad, he is never on time. Always an hour early or an hour late.” I walked around through the back hall and into the living room. “Damn, what’s wrong with this Mountain Dew?” I half yelled. “We haven’t bought Mountain Dew for over a year. That’s really old.” T answered as I ran for the front door and sprayed Mountain Dew, unintentionally, in my father’s face. I didn’t notice the clearly Italian man standing behind him trying to refrain from laughing. “Katie, what is on my face?” My dad asked with a deadly glare. “Uh, well you see… it’s all T’s fault…” I stalled. “Katie!” His voice was sharp and quick. “Year old Mountain Dew.” I answered. His glare changed from pissed to a surprised pissed. I took the moment to retreat. I darted over to my laptop. I threw it open and put on some music. The music drew Jamie out and we start the normal improv comedy act. We were flying of railings and body slamming T. When the music died down we introduced ourselves to Leo, the Italian who worked with my dad. more

Resolved Question: Would you buy the extended warranty or not?

My husband purchased a laptop for me for my birthday in May 2009. It was on clearance because it was a made-to-order customized one that someone canceled, so we got the system originally priced at $700 for like $450ish. We have a standard warranty on it for 1 year for parts but it does not cover accidents. A couple of years ago my husband bought me a laptop but he broke it but tripping over the power cord and shattering the screen (lol). It wasn't covered because he didn't buy the accident warranty. We just got an offer that if we purchase a warranty now, we can get 4 years worth of COMPLETE coverage including parts & even accidents like if we spill on it or if we drop it; everything is covered. If it can't be repaired we get a new laptop; same brand & model. The warranty is $204 if we purchase it within the next week, and we would be 100% covered no matter what until April of 2014. My husband and I are back and forth about it. I think we should do it because we broke the last one (and this one was dropped once and we had to replace a part in it.) It's only $200 for 4 1/2 more years! My husband thinks we shouldn't because it is half the price of what the computer cost in the first place. I understand that so part of me thinks "no" as well but since I need this laptop for work & I make a decent amount of money on it I think it's worth it. Would you purchase 4 1/2 years of 100% coverage even if it breaking is your fault for $204, or would you pass it up? more

Resolved Question: unknown usb device w/o anything plugged in?

My Gateway XP SP2 laptop (3-4 yrs old, store clearance, no disks) was giving me an unknown usb device the other day. 2 weeks ago MS Streets & Trips would not recognize the GPS even though the computer did (today OK). Then this unknown thing on port 2. It just kept popping up. I disabled this "device" in device manager. The funny thing? I unplugged everything & it still was there. It pops up every time I restart ( not often). Today, no restart, it's not there. Today, my air card would not power up in the normal port 1, but did in port 2. Port 2 usually has a generic 4 hub in it with 2 printers, ipod & wireless number pad. These are not all used at once. My printer would not work, plugged into the hub, but did all by itself. Are my USB ports dirty? & how to clean? Are they breaking? Is this some virus? I do have a PCMIA slot. Would a 2.0 hub make everything work faster? Air card won't work in current hub,will it work in 2.0 hub? I have to have air card & printer at the same time! more

I am flying on Saturday morning and I am so nervous because I have not flown in 15 years. I know I print out my boarding pass 24 hours before my flight. Resolved Question: Whats a good back to school laptop. (Durability is very important)?

And please nobody recommend a toughbook. If I could afford one I wouldn't be asking this question. I'm looking to spend $500-$900. My last laptop was an Acer Aspire that I bought from best buy on clearance. Software wise it was wonderful, and no typical hardware failure either. But after about four months the hinges started to seize which made opening the laptop much harder. Needless to say a screen component or two cracked because of this and it wasn't covered. I guess what I'm looking for is people who have had the same model laptop for at least a year or two, that haven't had any major issues with them. Software failure is fine, I can always format a drive and reinstall. But what's a laptop I can put in the laptop compartment in my backpack and carry on campus for the next two or so years? (ps. I know two people with Toshiba's that've had them about 18 months with no issues, opinions?) more

I have been reading through all of the major Australian websites, so I would really like to obtain a personal view at this point. Examples would be great. I am just concerned, because I don't quite understand the duty tax. For instance, if I were to bring a laptop, camera and charging base, hair straightener, make up, one small perfume container, hand lotion and perhaps a couple of other personal hygiene products - ALL of which items (including the lap top) are for my explicit personal use and to return with me to the U.S., will I be charged a tax or duty, etc. on these? I did purchase a laptop in US and they send it with USPS to China where I currently work. It were send from LA the 19/10/08 and arrive on 24/10/08. The tracking only said arrived Peoples Republic of China which I presume must be Shanghai. Since 25/10/2008 its at Customs. Any idea how long Customs can take (average) before been allowed to leave. I recently purchased a clearance laptop, the laptop works fine, and i have ran pc-check on it, and everything passed on pc-check, after one week, I realized the time on my laptop changes by itself, so i changed the battery on the motherboard, and still the time on my laptop changes by itself. I am not sure, if there is something wrong with the battery ( I doubt it, because it is brand new), or is there something wrong with my motherboard.i guess you are right, because i removed home premium and put vista ultimate on it, and the copy is cracked. more

Before the package was sent, I checked the customs website and it is OK for an individual to send dry pet food across the border from Canada to the U.S. I have been reading about clearance delays with nonfood items such as laptops and jewelry but haven't seen anything on food products. Someone sent me some rabbit pellets through FEDEX and it has been in clearance delay for a week. FEDEX has not notified me as to whether or not I need to send any personal information. Resolved Question: Laptop is overheating?

I hate my laptop. There, I said it. I have a crappy Gateway that I bought on clearance (yeah, yeah, I know, bad idea). I've dragged it through almost a year of life, and my one major complaint is that it overheats insanely fast, especially when I'm using the graphics card (watching movies, playing games, etc.). Earlier today (technically yesterday, to the world without insomnia), I tested to see if an ice pack would keep my gameplay smooth and not "choppy", like it normally is when it starts to overheat. It wasn't perfect, but it was definitely better. I'm not looking for ways to stop it from overheating - the best would be to just never turn it on. I'm trying to find ways to prevent it from overheating to the point that it burns my lap or cannot be touched anywhere near the heat vent. Would one of those laptop desks work - you know, the kind that has the fans that plug into your USB ports? Or is there something really obvious that I'm missing completely? Thanks! more

Circuit City is offering a $80 printer and a $50 router both for free after rebate. The dell has a printer half off and I'd need to buy the router for $50. I'm not confident if the rebate stuff will work, but it'd be great if it did. So, I'm leaning more toward the $650 toshiba since I need a printer and router as well. I know I'd be sacrificing some hard drive space and 2GB of ram, but I think the money saved would be worth it. The only thing that could change that would be if the dell has much better battery life, or if the rebates on the toshiba stuff doesn't work. So, here's a recap: Toshiba + Printer + Router = $1000 - $320 clearance and rebates = $680 Dell + Printer + Router = $1,450 - $500 clearance = $950 So if you count the printer and router, I pay $270 extra for the Dell, which has 2GB more RAM, 70 more hard drive space, better battery (not sure how much better), slightly lighter weight. Okay, I need a laptop to use as my main computer. I want it to run vista and i want to use photoshop. I also want it to last a long time and be durable since I'm bringing it to college.
