Open Question: I need a new laptop, Intel I7 vs. I5?

I'm in need of a new laptop and it has to have the horsepower to last for at least 5-6 years. My Dell Inspiron 9300 is going on 5.5 years and the screen is just beginning to get those annoying lines on it.I only had to replace the HDD at 3 yrs and a couple of replacement batteries. Expected maintenance... Unless convinced otherwise, it will probably be a Dell again. HP has been a headache when i used to work at a University help Desk. I've heard good things about ASUS but don't see a lot of warranty on them. But I'm open to suggestions, if supported by fact. I prefer Intel and am looking at either the I5 or I7 chipset. The I7's are still pushing a 15" machine over $1200. Config: 15", 4+gb RAM at 1033+, 500gb 7200rpm, 720p+ screen, 512mb NVidia, 802.11n, backlit keyboard for taking notes in dark classrooms, blue tooth, 8hr battery (9 cell for dell)) I need to stick with 15" as weight is an issue. It should be a decent multimedia machine that can serve all around purposes. Not looking for gaming performance. Is the I7 worth waiting for? Performance and cost wise over the I3 or I5 or say a P7450 or P8700. What is on the horizon that may drive CPU prices down? Recommendations? Reputation of mfgr, price vs performance are key points. more

Hello, thanks for seeing my question, well, I have a Compaq Presario (the old type like 2005), and it wont turn on. It all started when my power cord, the part that goes right into the laptop got wiggily. A few days after the charger did not work at all. I realized that the top part of the charger was broken, so I (very stupidly) cut off the top (the part that goes into the laptop), and manually connected the wires, it was very hard, a few burned fingers. ANYWAYS, i connected the wires (input and output) to the metal thing that goes into the laptop, (like this http://www.fonerbooks.com/laptop_7.htm ), and it ran like that for roughly a day i coulnt move it so it was basically a desk top =( SO, it occasionally made blue sparks when the input and output wires touched, untill finally, my laptop did not work at all. When i press the ON button, it at first came on for about 1 min, then just shutdown (not shutdown, but turned off), after that the orange light just flickered when i pressed the on button... DID I BLOW MY FUSE? Yes No? anyways, thanks, please help? more

okay so my boyfriend, his best friend and i went to the lake one weekend last summer and while there my boyfriend found a laptop at the hotel that we were staying at on a bench outside our room. he waited for about 30 min and didn't see anyone come back for it and he took it. and i know what your thinking "you let him??" no i told him to turn it into the clerk at the front desk. anyways when he found it the laptop didn't have a charger and we never got one for it. he sold it to his brother who did get the charger and started using the laptop. after a couple of days went by the cops showed up at his house asking about a stolen laptop and they took it. my boyfriend called the cop and told him that he found it. is it considered stealing?? could he get in trouble for it? oh and something else...the cop told him that the laptop was stolen from a car at the hotel and also a gps system and a ipod was stolen as well but we have no clue... more

My mom and I are moving into a new house and it has a loft about 20x15. I didn't want to leave my old house at all so as a consolation my mom said I can have the loft all to myself. I already know what basics i'm putting in there. Desk for homework, laptop, 80 inch TV (its too big for the people to take with them :) ), and XBOX360 with live. Open Question: A vase fell on the laptop now it keeps clicking and won't turn on all the way?

Open Question: Laptop router connection failure...?

I am having an intermittent issue with my laptop and router. More often than not, there is a strong signal but my laptop will fail to connect to the network. Windows gives the "there is possible interference with the router" suggestion. As of right now, I have the laptop sitting on the same desk as the router and still no connection. I have checked IP configurations and there is never an IP conflict. Wireless signal is active on laptop. Software/drivers are up to date. I can connect to other unsecured networks sitting in the same location where I cannot connect to my own router. The one thing I keep noticing; under ipconfig, I continually have "media disconnected" under ALL of the categories. Whenever I try to "/release" -> "/renew" I receive the following: "No operation can be performed on Wireless Network Connection while it has its media disconnected. No operation can be performed on Local Area Network while it has its media disconnected." Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance!An update: My laptop just connected without warning or touching anything. Just to reinforce the intermittent nature of the situation.I will try resetting the channel next. Have you tried resetting the router? Do you need to specify any security settings for the connection(i.e. WEP, WPA etc.)? Are any other nodes able to connect to the network? Currently; my desktop, 2 laptops, and iPod Touch... all of which no IP conflicts Previously have you been able to connect to the network? I am currently responding from my laptop using my internet access. Will it work when I restart, unknown. Have you thought about updating the router's firmware? Already done. more

I have an older Hitachi Deskstar ATA/IDE 20.0 gb hard drive which I would like to use as an external hd for my laptop so I can backup files to it (obviously Also the case cannot break the bank and in addition to me it doesn't matter if its a usb 2.0 or fire wire. i've been researching keyloggers but i am hesitant to buy one at the risk of viruses and possibly being traced back. i discovered cain and abel but i am not so computer savvy and i'm not sure what it does exactly. all i know it logs passwords over the LAN line securely. but does it record anything else like conversations, chats, emails, IMs etc.? it seems confusing all the "hashes" (whatever that means) etc. to a smart person it's easy, but can someone tell me as if i am an idiot on how to use it and what it does, and possibly how to install it correctly? there are two computers on this LAN. one a laptop and other desk, neither are macs. thank youit is safe? do i have to disable antivirus to download it? and how, if i can, send it to a target pc without anyone finding out? and what does sniffing mean? does it mean i do not have to install it on another pc if we use the same router? the same router? more

Open Question: I spilt a drink on my laptop - TOSHIBA EQUIUM A200 1V0 - how do I make it work again?

I was drinking a cordial orange juice drink, one you add water too, next to my laptop last night and accidentally knocked it over. It only splashed on and around the right hand speaker a little, and around the BACKSPACE, ENTER, +, -, screenshot and delete buttons. I instantly picked my laptop up and away from the liquid spilt on the desk, and wiped the liquid off my laptop with a towel. I then turned my laptop off and went to bed. On waking thismorning I thought to check on it. I turned it on and it got to the main TOSHIBA loading screen and got to the bar at the bottom saying it was a third loaded and then it started to make this horrifc continuous high pitched loud beeping noise. It doesn't load any further and the noise continues to beep until it it turned off. I haven't left it any longer than a minute in this beeping phase as the sound is actually unbareable, and to load, my laptop takes but seconds to load from the main loading screen. HELP! I think I can quite safely say my parents will KILL me if they find out. :') NIGHTMARE! Help help help! Thankyou for your time/help :)I only spilt the littlest bit on it, and i honestly don't think it could have got that wet. Plus the orange juice cordial is like one 7th of a pint glass, and the rest is water - it doesn't even dry that sticky. I honestly can't take it for repair because I'm totally skint, give or take about £60 - and repairs will cost a bomb. Also, I kinda want to ensure I exhaust every possible option of fixing it before my parents find out - my dad gets home on thursday, who, worst comes to worst, I'l tell him, but its not exactly something I intend on doing without exhausting EVERY possible option before it comes to that. I've turned it on twice that is all, and left it on for no more than about 2 mins in total, will this still have damaged it? Also, there is not sparking, smoke, or bad smells or anything - and it does load up to the main loading screen so it can't be that broken...right? Apologies if i seem niave or really daft here - my knowledge of computers in next to zilch :') more

Open Question: Desktop Replacement Laptop Beginner Guide?

I just bought a laptop to replace a desktop computer at home. It will be used for internet and watching movies. This is our first time of using a laptop. What is the general rule of thumb of using a laptop as a desktop replacement? My specific concern is the battery. Obviously, I'm having the laptop setup on the desk and plugged in to a power outlet 24/7, but should I leave the battery inside the laptop? Or, take it out? My guess is that having the batter stayed inside the laptop will not do the laptop any good but will in fact shorten the life of the battery itself. more

Open Question: Excellent quality (for music) small clip-on speakers for Laptops ?

Like many people, I use a laptop pc almost exclusively now - one thing thats always driven me crazy, if I want to chill and just listen to some of my favorite songs (and sorry, I hate headsets and ipod type plastic ear plugs, UGH) - I am just DYING for some nice Loud high quality external speakers, but I dont want to have all these wires running from the laptop to a desk or floor either - Does any company make a very very small set of speakers that I could just "clip on" to the top or sides of my laptop's flat screen, and plug into the PC's usb port? I have a set of regular old fashion speakers (like they use with desktop PCs) that I can plug into the laptop, but I just can't stand being tied down with the wires and big heavy speakers, I might as well just sit down at a desk and use the old huge desktop PC in that case. I have not seen any speakers like I am thinking of yet - don't know if they exist - but they'd have to sound Great for music (be loud, louder than the horribly Crappy built-in PC speakers that laptops all seem to come with !! ) And the usb connection would be the way to go I think, they would have more power and be louder, etc. Anything you plug into your headphone jack on your PC just seems to have no power or volume capability. Thanks to any PC techs or audiophiles out there that might be able to suggest a product such as I'm looking for - I hope small powerful lightweight speakers do exist !! more

I have a portable hard drive and when its in use it makes a clicking sound it this normal? Also when I played a file from the hard drive its keeps pausing, I have transfer the file to my pc desk top and played the file again and it seems to be ok, I was wondering is the hard drive only for storage of files and not to played from the hard drive some advice please? Open Question: Why does my HP laptop overheat so easily?

When I turn the computer on, the only programs that are running are the desktop, and the internet browser. At this point the fan is already working rather hard, only a minute or two after starting up the computer, and as soon as I either use windows media player or watch a youtube video the fan begins to sound like a small hairdryer on my desk, and after around five minutes the computer just instantly shuts off, and the fan outlet and the hard drive area are both burning hot to the touch. Is a physical part in the circuitry broken, or is a virus causing the processor to use up all of it's resources? I should note that this problem persists even after reinstalling the operating system using the system recovery program. more

Voting Question: Connect router to a LAN cable to create a secondary wireless connection?

I'm sharing my friends internet connection. However, the wireless network is too weak at my desk. So I'm using a LAN cable, connected to his router. The LAN cable is short too. So I have connected the (other end of) LAN cable to a secondary router. This way I can use the secondary router to create a secondary wireless network, as well as connect a (secondary, smaller) LAN cable to it which I can connect my laptop. This is similar to a repeater action of the router, the difference being I'm connecting it to a LAN cable. I know it works, but I don't know if its efficient to simply set it up like this. Any thoughts? more

I have an Acer Extensa Laptop with Windows Vista. The laptop sits on my desk, and ocasionaly i plug in monitor via vga plugg and it works fine. When i change the option, so that i have two screens for the one computer, again it works fine, but when i unplug it then i have to erset my computer to get the screen working again. But now, my new screen wont turn on at all, exept for the two screen option which still ahs the same problem. Also, when i first plugged the new one in, i got a window with some options to do wtih the screen, but now i cant pull it up. How do i get my screen working again.The external screen works up untill it finshed loading vista, then goes blankFound out the prob and gonna answer my own question so others can see the answer. I pressed the Windows Key and x opened up a Vista Menu that allowed me to change my screen settings to mirrored, extended or make my external the main. more

Ok you know in lame movies or tv shows where they show some guy (or girl) peeking through the library shelves to check out a girl (or guy) without them noticing? yeah well that happened to me and so I confronted the weirdo and I was like, um can I help you, and then he kind of ran off. Then later on I was sitting at one of the desks working on my laptop and he comes over and sits right next to me so I was like "um hi?" and he goes "Would it be completely out of line if I asked what your name was" so I told him my name and then he goes "I need to go the bathroom, can you watch my stuff while I'm gone" so I was like um ok. It took him like 20 minutes to get back and I had to go so I left and then he said "I'll see you again." that creeped me out. is this guy just a douche or is he a creeper? more

Resolved Question: Why do I always have to reset my router?

I have Charter (Internet/Digi Cable/Phone) and weve always had this problem (4 years now). Charter does some kind of test without even being here and says everything checks good, and that we have a VERY strong signal going to our house. There is 1 laptop, and 1 desktop in our house (Used to be just 2 laptops). Older laptop was running XP Pro, new laptop is Windows 7, desktop is 7 Ultimate, and its the same on all of them. (Laptop/s are WiFi, desktop is Ethernet). Usually once a day, I have to unplug my router for 15 seconds, otherwise the little " /!\ " icon shows on my taskbar, where it shows the connection. Sometimes weve went for weeks without it happening, sometimes it happens 5 times a day. Its both computers, not just one. 98% of the time unpluigging the router fixes the problem, and the other 2% I have to unplug both the router and modem. When I had my old laptop, with Vista Ultimate, I could usually "Troubleshoot" the connection (It was called something else for Vista, I think "Diganose Connection Problems" or something) and that would fix it 99% of the time, but a few times, I had to actually hold the RESET button on the back of the router for 28 secs. Its a Linksys router, its less than 5 months old, its a Wireless G with Rangebooster, we had a Linksys before, but a different model, which also did the same thing. Its not really a huge issue, but its getting really annoying if im in a rush, I gotta duck under my desk and unplug it. Im about to hardwire the power cord to a switch by my keyboard lol. Voting Question: How can i fix my computer to automatically open icons when i click on them instead manually finding the right?

My little sister was using my laptop and messed up some of my settings, now when i go to open a program from my desktop a prompt opens up and i have to manually find the correct program to open the file up with. Is there any way to undo these settings and put them back to normal so when i double click an icon on my desk top it will open automatically like its supposed to?? Please help me out more

i know i asked this question before but let me add some more detail, i got this from wal-mart, its "ultra speed" external hard drive, i know the whole how to partion it thing in disk 1 it says Disk 1 Basic 74.53 GB Online then in the bar graph thing next to it, it says 70.48 GB Unallocated, and its split an dnext to it it says SERVICEV001 then 4.04GB FAT32 Healthy(ESIA Configuration) and thats all its shows, and i deleted the partion for the unallocated part and for the first time i partioned it, i selected new partion> primary partion> then it says in the Speficy partion size, it says the max disk space (MB) 72175 min= 8 and if i touch anything or every try increas partian size it makes even small to 6GB, then i gotta cancel and do new partian over, but if i jst click next, i assign it a letter in my case letter L because i gotta alota mounted games, then i did forma this partion, in NTFS, with defualt allocation size unit and new Volume label, and unchecked perform quick format and enable file and folder compression then yea, i cancelled it now and im running windows xp and its on my laptop i tried on a desk tope but still 70gband i bought my laptop 5 months ago, acer aspire 5516, 3gb ram more

Resolved Question: My computer overheated and now crashes... all the time?

My laptop overheated a couple of days ago (faulty fan) and now everytime I attempt to start up the computer I get to log in, it loads the desktop, then the screen scrambles and freezes or goes to a blue screen and resets the computer with minutes of turning it on. It has crashed twice before... but hasn't for months now, but after it shut down after getting to hot it has become unusable. Could an overheating problem have caused this, or is it a virus that I just happened to get the same day it started crashing... cause after it overheated I just put it on my desk, went to bed, and it started the next day first thing... It's a Gateway NV52 btw more

Voting Question: My computer will not boot to the desktop... what should I do?

The laptop fell off of a desk closed, about two to three feet and now it won't boot to the desktop. It will turn on and bring up the choices of Safe Mode, Safe Mode With Command Prompt, a third choice I can't remember and Start Windows Normally. Whichever choice I pick it brings up a loading screen and then restarts. I cannot get it further than this point. more

Okay so I have an acer laptop i'm not sure what the model number is but I have been getting these messages non stop about my protection for my pc and I cant stop getting them. Its frustrating. My desk top had gone black yesterday and it no longer shows its background. it still shows what you can do on it I am so irritated because this laptop is only a year old i really cant afford a new laptop and pc protection. Voting Question: Is there a real terminal server for windows?

However impractical it is, I want to try. Is there a way to make another computer (a laptop, if it works well enough) boot off of another computer like a TRUE terminal used to be? As in, the computer on the desk does nothing but send keyboard + mouse commands and receive what to display for the user. Remote Desktop Connection is NOT what I want. It's slow... The reason: I have a loaded i7, and I want to be able to be in more than one location to use it. Not necessarily for gaming, but that'd be ideal. more

OK. So here it goes: There's a Chinese general from a long time ago -- think Mulan. He's been put in charge of going around a part of China and inspecting the villages and roads. He's in charge of the roads. He finds a village in the mountains, except all of the village people are using laptops and GPS. He continues on, and passes by some donkeys on this bridge across a misty valley, and he sees the queen coming. She demands that he take her to the village, so he does, begrudgingly. She calls for all the technology to be destroyed, and the general flips out. He tells the villagers that they shouldn't be progressing so quickly, to stop and smell the roses, as it were, and tells the queen that she can't hinder progress either. Then I realize I'm watching a video. I'm in my high school, and the teachers tell everyone to get in line to go through this tunnel. The tunnel is a kaleidoscope of colors, and branches off into tunnels, each of a different pattern and color, that go into different directions. I'm with a friend of mine, and she suggests we go down a black-and-white-checkered one, but I have to say no, because this is the tunnel of life, and we have to find the tunnel that is ours, the one that represents our own unique destiny. So we part and I follow this glowing tunnel until I come out in the office of my middle school. I stand up and there's a nice woman with blond hair who tells me I now need to fill out a form with the most random questions on it, like my favorite color ice cream. So I sat there on the floor behind this desk and another one adjacent to it, filling out this form. I was waiting for something, or someone, while I was sitting there on the floor but I don't know what. It was extremely vivid, and somewhere it happened that I was on a committee to clean up after old people bingo in this large cafeteria, except I don't know where that happened or if it was part of the dream at all. more

I recently moved my wireless printer onto my desk where I have my la top as well and I have been having trouble connecting to the internet. My laptop is connecting to the router fine but the internet goes out. I contacted my ISP and everything is fine on their end and I believe it is my laptop. Resolved Question: I am running a virus scan, and a lot of "locked" files are coming up. Whats that mean?

Right now im on my laptop,but on the desk top theres a bad virus that wont let me open ANYTHING. even task manager. So im in safe mode doing a scan and theres a lot of LOCKED files. what is that? Can that be my problem??so its stilll scanning and another question... is it normal to have soo many locked files?Thank you Al.... but my problem is i cannot get online to download.
