I have an msi vr420 laptop, I recently installed ubuntu 10.04, I don't have windows xp on my laptop anymore. My wireless card seems to be working as I can see all the networks available in the vicinity (mine and my neighbours') but it says my ip address cannot be found. I have internet when I use an ethernet cable. Could anyone suggest a solution to this problem? I could connect to the internet via wlan when I had windows. Is it just this version of ubuntu that is problematic? Should I consider installing a different version? moreOpen Question: Should I sell my desktop and get a laptop?

Alright, lots of information, but I'll try to keep this as straight as possible. I recently bought a new Desktop. It came with Windows 7 Premium Home Edition. I already have a router plugged into the wall and the connection is set up and I can connect to it using my laptop. So, I turn on my Desktop for the first time and I instantly go to "set up a new wireless connection" and click "Connect to the internet" and choose "Broadband (PPPoe)". It then prompts me asking for a username and password the ISP provided me (they never did?) and a new name for the internet connection. I make up my own username and password and name and click connect. It starts to connect (says WAN miniport PPPoe), then i get a message saying an error has occured (error 651) and it says something about my modem having a problem. Someone told me to check if I have a wireless network card, so i went into control panel and clicked "network adapters" and it said "nVidia nforce 10/100 mbps Ethernet" (idk if that's a wireless network card). Anyway, I can't seem to get past this problem and I need some help. I currently have a router from Shaw that is brand spanking new. moreOpen Question: Remote Desktop: I cannot connect to Remote Desktop using wireless at home.?
I am able to connect with a Verizon Card and land line using the Cable Modem. However, I cannot connect using wireless which is also connected to the cable modem. It seems to be my netbook because I do not have this problem using a different Laptop. I turned off all my firewall, uninstalled my antivirus protection, and logged in as the administrator. I have XP Home Edition, which cannot be the issue b/c I can connect using the ethernet. In the Remote Desktop, I do not see the option to enable Remote Desktop, I only see Remote Assistance and there is nothing below that. I doubt this has something to do with it since I can remote desktop using the ethernet. Please help!!!! moreOpen Question: I bought a Gateway FX6840-01e, will it be able to get on the internet or do I need to buy something?
I bought a Gateway FX6840-01e desktop and are having a hard time getting onto the internet. My laptop automatically found the wireless connection for me to select. This doesn't happen with this desktop. With my old computer I had to buy this device that plugged into the back that connected me to the internet. Will I have to buy this for this computer? Specs are below. I can't believe with everyone using wireless these days they wouldn't include a wireless card!!! Specs say it has: Network Card 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN (RJ-45 port) but I'm not sure if that is the wireless internet card. The only problem with it is that it overheats too quickly, then the fan starts working too hard and when that happens, it slows down to the point it takes more than a 5 seconds to open a document, a program and surfing the internet without the page lagging so much. So im planning on buying a new laptop from the same brand but I take other brands if their good. No HP laptops or anything made from Hp Company. I don’t trust them ok. What im looking for in a new laptop are these specs: OS: Windows 7 Pro (64 bit) or Ultimate (64 bit) Harddrive: 250 or higher RAM: DRR3 4gb or higher HD screen and really good Video card plus sound card Optical Drive: DVD supermulti with or without flash label Screen size: 13 to 15 inch Battery: 2 hrs or more All around the price 1000 dollars or less. What I use my laptop is mostly for these: College, Email, Internet, Video Editing, Music Editing, Watching videos (on laptop and online like youtube), Downloading music and videos, playing light video games(like NES, SNES, Sega, Gameboy, N64 and PS1), and Burning movies. Also can you give me a few names of brands instead of just one ok. Also SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY!!!!!!!! ok. If you dont know it then don't answer it ok. Thank you!Proccessor: Intel Core i3 or i5I clean my laptop on a daily basis and i clean out all the dust on it to so dont mention about "just clean it out" ok.I also just bought a new laptop fan cooler to see if it will fix my overheating problem which it did but my speed is still too slow to open up programs. moreVoting Question: how can i connect to the internet through another computer using a crossover cable?
i have Laptop that does not have a wireless card in it. so i have an old ethernet crossover cable and i have two ethernet ports on my desktop. my Desktop has internet via ethernet. but how can i get internet on my laptop without messing With my current home network setup? we have 4 family computers on one router and a wireless router. all (monitored) through one computer(or straight from the router, not sure) its not poxed just a standard home network setup. so how do i share my desktops internet connection without messing With Other networked computers? or will checking in my network card property's the "allow other computers to use this PCs internet connection" effect other networked computers? moreResolved Question: Is this a good computer to last for 2 years from now?
http://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-X3810-U1802-DVD-RAM-Ethernet/dp/B0037M98WE It is an Acer Aspire X3810-U1802. It is up on Tigerdirect for $549.99. I need a system that does not take space, so I looked for slimlines (no laptops). I know the graphics are terrible, so I'm planning on getting a low profile graphics card (most likely the Radeon HD 4650) and I know the power supply is HORRIBLE but I heard of many people claiming that they are able to use it despite the recommended 400 W PSU. I'm also concerned about the new technology out there, since the Core 2's are like last generation. But I checked the benchmarks for the Core 2 Quad Q8300, and it's almost 4 times better than my laptop I'm currently using for the last 3 years (it is a Core 2 Duo running at 1.6 Mhz). No question that this desktop destroys it but... **The question is, is this a good computer to last for say at least 2 years from now for my needs (see below)? Other notes: First of all, I am not a huge gamer. I play things like Diablo 2 (used to anyway), Warcraft 3, WoW, Maplestory, and whatever MMORPG or RPG game I'm interested in. I would like to be able to play Diablo 3 as well. I'm also into the PS2 emulation stuff, mainly so I can play old Final Fantasy games that I have never played before. I would like to do things like editing videos, Fraps, and basically multitask more efficiently. I'm also on a tight budget, hence why I had to do lots of searching for the right computer to last for a while with a nice price tag. PS: DO NOT TELL ME TO CONSTRUCT MY OWN COMPUTER. That's my plan after I graduate from school 1-2 years from now when I get a better job to make a monster of a computer. Many thanks! moreVoting Question: My ethernet card (PCI input) wont connect to the internet.?
Morrow all, Several months ago my computer could connect to the internet from my modem via the ethernet port on my motherboard, I had a cruel and heartless attack from several viruses and virus related things, they have since been destroyed, however after this my computer could not connect to the internet, i did all the checking of drivers, rolling them back and so on, but still no luck. I then tried a USB wireless network adaptor, assuming that some how the ethernet port on my motherboard had perished. this said that it was connected to the WiFi, but both Firefox and IE said otherwise. I checked all the drivers and all was (apparently) working fine. Again I assumed it died. So today arrived a Ethernet PCI adaptor, thinking that "surely I wont be letdown a third time", I was. Drivers install off the disk fine, my computer knows the adaptor is there, claims its working fine. but it wont connect. an unspecified error occurs when I try to set up the network connection using the wizard, and when I run 'ipconfig.exe' the following text comes up: "An internal error occurred: The request is not supported. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help Additional Information: Unable to query host name" I know the router/modem works as i have an old Sony VAIO running on Ubuntu and that connects via the ethernet and many laptops that can connect wirelessly. I run off Windows XP, and the adaptor is the Edimax Gigabit Ethernet PCI Adaptor, driver v. 2.0. I am begingin to get annoyed with the whole thing, I put together the computer myself a year ago, but it all worked fine until march-ish, and it still all works bar the internet. any help would be lovely, Q moreResolved Question: Help choosing my new notebook?

A couple of months ago I bought an HP Dv6 Laptop from my local Costco. Fast forward a few months and my AC Adapter had to be replaced and my second one is having the same problem: To hot to touch, will not charge laptop, ect. The Main Laptop also has these problems and some more. HDMI Port will not work due to lack of any dedicated/shared graphics card/chip Battery and bottom of laptop will get too hot to touch Randomly shuts off with no warning and full battery Ethernet port does not function Track pad, keys, ports, and buttons will become unresponsive at times. The list goes on... Never the less I am past Costco's 90 Day Return Policy, The number they give me to to call goes to someone who is not in a position to do anything, or does just not care. My desktop was plugged into my router via ethernet and Im running runescape through wireless on my laptop, does that make a difference? is this to do with my internet connection or my Macbook Pro? Thanks! I have the 2.53 GHz on my MBP by the way! Thanks in advance!!!oh really? So there's nothing I can do about it then apart from get a new desktop? (which I wont be doing lol)I will try connecting to my router through a wired connection and will see what happens =) thanks!okay so wired connection doesn't work... exact same lag, also tried runescape in safe mode and didnt work! By the way I have played runescape on my old laptop which was TERRIBLE, like the same as a really cheap netbook and that didn't lag at all. Basically this has to be an internet connection problem!! Except I haven't changed my internet settings at all since I got rid of my desktop! I have also never played runescape on my MBP before! here are my speedtest results: PING: 136ms Download Speed: 7.90 mbps Upload Speed: 0.62 mbps So there you go, I am way over the average of my Internet Service Provider aswell by the way. THANK YOU SO MUCH moreResolved Question: Can i use an ethernet card in a desktop without built in wifi & if so, in what port?
I have a Dell Desktop that I have always connected to my router with a wire for internet use via the phone jack looking port on the dell. Recently, we were unable to connect to the internet with the Dell, even though our internet was working (I had been able to connect to the internet with my laptop, which has built in wifi). After we tried 100 other things, we came to the conclusion that the phone jack type port was the problem~ to be certain, I logged off my laptop’s wifi connection and plugged the line to the router we usually have plugged into the dell, into my laptop’s phone jack port. It worked fine- meaning it’s not the line and it’s not the router; it’s the port on the desktop. I don’t have the $ at the moment to buy a new desktop or the parts/labour to fix the port on it. We do however have an Ethernet card I used to get wifi on my old laptop, which didn’t have it built in. The Ethernet Card is an Encore Electronics 54 Mbps Wireless PC Card (Cardbus). The Dell does not have a slot/port on the exterior that we can put the card in, but my husband opened the dell up and looked inside to see if there was a place to put the card into internally, so we could pick up wifi from our router, until we have the cash to repair the port. We couldn’t find any obvious places inside to put the card in- but my husband says there are several unused open ports inside, he believes for add-ons (? Neither of us are very educated on the inner workings of computers, so please bear with my terminology- or lack thereof). We wondered if indeed there is a place to insert the card inside. My husband also wondered if there was a way to disconnect the 3 ½ inch floppy disc drive to use the connector to connect the card to? I’ve uploaded a photo of the internal Dell; as well as a photo of the card I have. I marked the internal Dell photo with a red X near the port my husband thought we might be able to use to insert the card. If these won’t work, is there another way to use it? Again, I don’t have the cash to buy a part or get it fixed at the moment- so I’m not looking for “go to the store and buy a _____” answers (barring any suggestions on how to fix it MacGyver style with household goods, lol). Thanks for any help in advance ;) Link to photo's of Dell and card: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=71648&id=1348057068&l=92c4001c63 Details on the Dell Computer: Dell Desk Top Computer Date on Dell Feb. 23, 2004 Dell Optiplex GX270 IntelPentium 4 w/rewritable DVD & 3 ½ inch floppy***I just realized i was using the wrong name- it's not an ethernet card, it's a wireless PC card- sorry about that ;P*** To answer the questions below: Yes, the port lights up; but it flashes yellow on the dell port, and green on the router's port. Also- the computer aknowledges the land connection as working (says "working properly", but it can't display the web page). We did try to do a system restore before we defided it was the port but it wouldn't let us do the system restore, which seemed strange, since we've never had trouble doing that before. I don't know how to answer the other 2 things- how do i tell if it's assigned the IP Address? I assumed it was the dell and not the router b/c I took the line plugged into the dell port and plugged it into my laptop instead, and it connected into the internet.**And also, while i appreciate your taking the time to answer the question, as i mentioned in the post, I don't have the cash to fix/repair/replace at the moment, so that doesn't help- i have a guy dow the street who will fix it once I can pay; i'm looking for a temporary solution in the meatime so I can get online for work (my work's software is only on my desktop; not my laptop- so i need to get online on that computer) moreVoting Question: Can this computer run WoW with HD and minimum lag?
