Open Question: relatively - how much effort would it take for my employer to track this usage on my laptop?
Ok I know that in this day and age, I mustn't be naiive, and people say pretty much ANYTHING that you do on your work computer can be somehow tracked/monitored/recovered etc. etc. etc. However, after working at various financial and very "corporate"-ish companies over the years, I have indeed noticed that some companies (and some of their divisions within), do more or less, so it's not all the same risk, if you have at least some idea of how much monitoring, tracking they do in your area. Positions are different too. Less tracking might be done (or at least only once a year or so) on teh machine of management than team members. Whatever. anyway, my other thing is, yes anything is "possible", but often not feasible. example, a company may not choose to spend a certain amount of time checking into one employee, unless/until there is some reason so. so here is my situation: laptop computer, that's pretty well locked down. (I am not an admin). windows PC. XP professional. I.E. browser, I.E. 7 i believe. When my laptop is at home with me, AND I AM NOT CONNECTED TO THE COMPANY NETWORK / VPN, and if during that time, I put a CD into the CD drive. the CD has pictures on it. Maybe a .avi or .wmv file or two. I view or play those items, using only windows picture and fax viewer, and also using maybe WMP. at this time, I also am not even connected to the internet. I do nothing with the files (don't copy or move them off of the cd drive), just view them, then pop the CD back out and that's it. Of course, later on (maybe the same day, maybe in a few days), I finally do connect to the corporate network. realistically how likely is it, how possible, how hard would it be (or is it even possible), for some person or program to actually notice the fact that my harddrive, at one time in the past, played a file that was only available to the harddrive while on the CD. guess what i'm saying is, it must make a huge difference that the data was never stored on the harddrive of the computer....right? can the harddrive and memory and what's recoverable from that standpoint, really have much effect on something that was accessed from a removable drive? moreOpen Question: intel or amd? ati or nvidia ? I have a desktop computer with Windows Vista and a laptop that I'm trying to turn into a Linux box with Ubuntu 8.04. However, I want to grab and back up the files from the laptop's hard drive before I wipe it clean and start fresh with Ubuntu. Is it possible for the two machines to directly connect while I run Ubuntu live from the disk, or would I need to go about backing up the hard drive some other way? The most readily available networking cable I have is an ethernet cable, but if I can only do this with a CAT5e crossover cable or something similar, please let me know.UPDATE: I tried the fix you recommended, and I got an error on my laptop (running Ubuntu off the live CD). I set up everything so that the laptop and my Vista box could see each other, and every time I attempted to move files into a folder called "Windows Network" on the laptop I got the error message, "Operation not supported by backend". Is there any way around this? If it helps, my Vista box is a custom gaming rig I threw together with stuff from Newegg. moreResolved Question: Is this too much to pay for a good gaming laptop with lots of nice perks (updated post)?
$1700 (this price includes tax and shipping) - I asked this question before but I wasn't very specific. So I copied and pasted the specifics for the laptop below. I don't want to know if I'm getting a deal (I know it's not the cheapest out there), I just want to make sure I'm not paying waaay too much. A lot of the little things this laptop had are important to me like the backlit keyboard, 10 key pad, style, and 17" screen (plus the touch software is nice) and I found it hard to find these all on another laptop I liked. Alright... I'm buying a new laptop but I know pretty little about laptops/computers. I know things like ram and all but at least last time I went to buy a laptop I came across a lot of other stuff that for the most part went over my head. I have a pretty limited budget of around 400-500$ and I'm hoping to get the most for what I'm paying. My main focus is gaming (But I know this won't be a gaming laptop. But the better it can be towards this the happier I'll be. I don't expect to be playing the newest computer games out or anything with this budget, but some of the older ones would be nice.) Basically my question is can anyone who is really knowledgeable in laptops/computers tell me what I should be looking for specs wise (like what elements are most important, where I can afford to sacrifice things, and things that are absolutely necessary), especially in regards to my budget. Particular recommendations of laptops would also be appreciated. How is this one by the way? A Dell computer costing 524$. Specs are... I know this question has been asked quite a bit and I looked up all the answers but mine still does not work. It always does this after I reformat my hard drive but it usually stops after a few days, but not this time. So everything works fine with my wireless connection and then all of a sudden my net goes out and I get the limited connectivity message in my task bar. When this happens my computer does not find ANY of the wireless networks in my area (such as neighbors that are usually in the list) It says 0 wireless connections found. Even unplugging the router and plugging it back in wont fix it. I even reset the router to factory settings and set up everything from scratch but still the same problem. The only way I can fix it is to restart my laptop and then it works again for about 2-3 hours sometimes longer sometimes less and then it happens again. I am using a WRT100 Linksys router and DHCP Server is enabled, my computer is set to obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS Server address automatically. When I get the limited connectivity my daughters and husbands laptops still work fine. Any ideas? Who would I contact if I cant get nothing to work? Would I contact Linksys (is it a router issue?) or would I contact Acer (Is it a problem with Wireless adapter, vista, etc. ?). Thanks in advance I hope someone can help me out because it really sucks when I am in the middle of college work and constantly have to restart my laptop. moreResolved Question: Can I install photo editing/organization software on a shared network external hard drive?
Hi all, I have a home wireless network consisting of one desktop computer and two laptops. We have an external hard drive that is connected to the desktop where we store all of our music and digital photos. I am looking for a way to continue to store the photos on the external hard drive but be able to access/edit them via the laptops. I tried to install Google's Picasa on the hard drive and then open it and use it from the laptops. It seemed to be working fine but once the computer system was restarted and I tried to access Picasa again, I had to reload the pictures into the program. This process is very time consuming. I went to Fry's and told them I want to set up a home network. I have 1 desktop and 2 laptops, and live in a large 2-story house (with many walls). I also have 2 Comcast VOIP phone lines as well as internet service, plus Brink's alarm (which works via phone lines). I want to be able to access files on my hard drive from my desktop and laptops at the same time from anywhere in the house. My previous router was problematic, so first off I was wanting a new router. Secondly, I was wanting a way to have the above access without phone issues or connectivity issues as I've previously experienced with my old router. They sold me a D-Link DIR-825 Dual Band N Wireless Router and a 500GB hard drive. I am wondering the following.... Do I need adapters for the desktop and laptops? When setting up a network, what steps do you take first, second, third, etc.? Also, one of my laptops is brand new (not even opened) and it has Windows 7, but the other laptop and desktop are XP. I was told at BestBuy to make the new laptop with Windows7 the main computer for the network, but if I take that away from the house can the others still run? THANK YOU ALL for any assistance you can provide!!! moreVoting Question: PLEASE HELP! Computer keeps restarting!?
I really have no idea what happened. I was just using my new Acer Net book and all of a sudden it went wacky. Then it restarted and it showed that message that Windows is not working properly or something, and I had to choose the options: Safe Mode, Safe Mode w/ Networking or Command Prompt, Last Good Configuration, or Start Windows Normally. I used LGC first and then Safe Mode and then everything else, but nothing worked! I've researched on what could have happened, but I don't think my hard drive is fried because I only have 20 GB used in there out of 160. Also, I just received this laptop since Christmas, it was reconditioned, but fine when I had it. I had charged it overnight to see if it could work, but it was still the same. Could these factors contribute to the crash? -I DL'd music using Bitorrentz -I used a flash drive to insert files -I haven't cleaned my hard drive (I thought I didn't need to because I still have a lot of space) Also in the process of restarting over and over again, an option of pressing F2 to SetUp is there, will changing something in the setup help my computer to start? I know that if I reinstall Windows on my laptop it might work again, but I don't think that's possibly because my netbook doesn't even have a place to insert a CD! (It's only 11"). PLEASE HELP. I really don't want to get a new laptop/computer again :( Techies, please tell me how to fix this!! Thank you! moreResolved Question: is the Apple iMac G3 12inch Laptop a good computer/buy?

I have two Gateway laptops from the same place. They are pretty old but ran just fine when I got them. Recently the laptop that I regularly use wouldn't start up. A message came up when I was trying to start it, saying "Windows did not start properly... hardware or software might have caused this." Then it has me choose from SAFE MODE, SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING, SAFE MODE WITH COMMAND PROMPT, LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION, or START WINDOWS NORMALLY. First, I chose Start Windows Normally and it just came back to the same message. I tried every option and it all just came up with the same message. I read somewhere to take out the hard drive and put it in another computer to save my files. So, I did that and put it in my other Gateway laptop and the same message came up! So, I took it out and just let it rest for a day. I came back to my other laptop that actually works and the exact same message came up. I have no idea what could be wrong. I'm not good with computers and I don't want to mess up the computers anymore than they might be. Is it the hard drive or the laptops? If the hard drive is shot can I recover it somehow? Here's the problem: I'm trying to fix my mothers computer. I was at my mothers house trying to work with her laptop. It said she was connected to the internet, but every time I clicked on the internet explorer icon it said it could not display the page, that it was not connected. But, specifically, in the "http" box (I don't remember what it's called, lol) I type in the yahoo address and click enter, the yahoo address I put in is replaced with "http:///" exactly...This is what I did next: I cleared the cache, ran a scan with her security software (but I got an error, because it says it can't get on the internet), ran disc cleanup, ran disc defrag, then I uninstalled her McAfee and installed Norton 360 (but also got an error for the same reason, no internet), so then I went to do a system restore, but it says I can't restore it because there have been no changes (like nothing new loaded on the computer?) So for the fun of it, I put in her Operating System disc and went to reinstall it (she has Windows XP) but also got another error, same reason, no internet, so then I did a diagnostic of the hard drive, and everything passed I'm currently at my home on my laptop with my p/w protected secured wireless. I turn on my mothers computer and I see the "little computers" in the system tray. They have a red X. But I also see an icon next to it that's 1 computer with a yellow bubble revolving around it (searching for a wireless network icon). I have never seen these as separate icons before. So I clicked on it to view the networks and I see my network. When I click on it, it says the laptop is connected to the wireless, but I know this is impossible, b/c my wireless is p/w protected, and I didn't type in the p/w to allow the connection! So next, I went to malwarebytes.org and downloaded onto a disc, their free malware program and loaded onto my mothers computer. I got an error but it still let me scan the computer and it says it found 7 viruses, including worms and trojans. I clicked the option to remove. After all that, I still can't get on the internet with the laptop, and I decided to directly connect it to my modem and...nothing...I click on the icon and it says the same thing... Does this sound like anything anyone knows about? Is there anyone out there that can help? I posted a different thread yesterday, but I believe I did not give enough info. So here goes again. I have a few Dvd's, on which I have burned many moveis games etc, all in data format. These Dvd's include DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-R So On this computer I have burned and used these DVD's tehy were working fine. But now all of a sudden, the DVD+RW and DVD+ R stopped working. I tried it on one of my other computers and it works!!!! I dont know whats wrong, or why this is happening. When I say it doesnt work I mean, I put the DVD in, and go to my computer after a minute of waiting, the icon on the drive chnages which means it detects a dvd, and it gives me the otpion to burn the dvd!!! I have tried several DVD's and they all dont work, and when I tried them on the different computer they work!!! The only dvd that wokrs is the DVD-R dvds. In addition to this, I dont know if this helps at all, but my control buttons have stopped working. Hey all. Forgive me for being long winded, a little background information is required first. A rather unfortunate incident has occurred on my Toshiba laptop (A215-S5837). The laptop no longer recognizes my CD/DVD drive - Vista (Vista Home Premium) won't recognize it, and the BIOS won't recognize it, however it does open, and does spin. Because of this, I am not able to restore my computer, or install anything new on it (hence the need to restore). I have a network at home, and I thought about accessing my desktop (running XP)'s DVD drive remotely. I enabled sharing on the drive, but when I try to map the drive on my laptop, it recognizes it, but then gives me "Access Denied" when trying to read the DVD. I am able to access everything else on my desktop remotely (both hard drives), but none of the CD's. I also made sure the security settings for remotely accessing a cd drive under Local Settings (Administrative Options) were disabled. Any ideas? At the moment, I can't afford to bring my laptop into the repair shop, and the warranty is expired. I would think it's a hardware issue for the CD/DVD, however the computer has not been dropped or handled harshly and a few days ago, everything was working fine. Also, the firewalls are turned off on both computers. Thank you again for taking the time to read this. Please pardon any repetition or confusion in my description. EricLet me reiterate - I've already enabled sharing! moreResolved Question: six year old laptop??

Recently, my computer sent me a message tell me that it was gonna restart automatically to install updates in 14 minutes (i think it's 14) and gave me the option to either restart later or now (something it does every now and then) and restarted on to the same message. The message was as follows: We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this. If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked. Hi My Dell Mini 10V Inspiron Netbook recently started to refuse to load windows. When I turn it on it beings to load and then skips to a black screen telling me there was a problem installing software and gives me the options to either; safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, or start windows normally. I have attempted going through each of these options and each one loads the Windows logo for a second and then cuts to a blue screen telling me there was a problem booting the computer and that I should turn it off to protect the computer. This is something that's been irritating me since I got my new Macbook Pro a couple of weeks ago. I have an old PC laptop that I keep hooked up to my 2 external hard drives full of music and documents and whatnot. That laptop can access and copy files to and from these hard drives pretty quickly (I just transferred 15GB of stuff from one hard drive to the other, through that laptop, and it took only 10-12 minutes). My Macbook Pro, on the other hand, accesses things very, very slowly through the network. It takes a couple minutes to transfer just a few megabytes; the 300GB or so of music I have on one of those hard drives has been taking two days to import into iTunes (no, I'm not transferring the files, either, just reading them). The 5GB of recorded play scenes I have on my Macbook takes about 2 hours to transfer to one of those hard drives that's shared on the network through my PC laptop. What gives?
