My dell 1521 laptop turned off on me the other night when I was in the middle of using it.. now it won't turn back on. When I plug the charger in the battery light and power light each light up once than nothing happens. When I take out the battery and plug in the charger no lights come on and nothing happens. Sorry for the vague question, but I couldn't get all the detail in there. I'm going to university in October, and will need a laptop. I find looking at different laptops on the internet incredibly difficult because there are so many of them and they are difficult to compare, so I'm asking in the hope that someone will have some experience. Features that are important to me: Good quality keyboard (reasonable size, good for extended periods of typing) Good build quality Reasonable battery life Light and smallish - it will need to be ok to lug around a lot Capable performance - it will be mostly a work machine, but I like photography so it would be great if it could cope with light GIMP work. Ubuntu compatibility would be nice Things I'm not bothered about: Brands Hard drive space (I keep all my files on an external HDD) I'm planning to spend no more than £300-350, reconditioned. So far, I've taken a real shine to the HP Mini 2140 for its compactness, keyboard, durability and battery life. But is long periods of typing on a 10in screen annoying, and will it cope with basic photo editing? Hope you can help; sorry it's not a simple question. Ben more

Open Question: Help with Internet connection on Laptop PLEASE!!?

I was using the internet yesterday in my laptop just fine, but today when I turned it on and clicked on Mozilla Firefox (the browser I use) I got this message "The procedure entry point js_NextActiveContext could not be located in the dynamic link library js3250.dll". Does anybody know what this could possible mean?? If it is of any help, I had the Vista Guardian virus about 3 days ago but got rid of it completely by using the superantispyware free version, and after getting rid of it my laptop was working just good as usual until this morning when I got that message. I also tried to run Firefox by using the windows key+run and typing Firefox but got the same message. Furthermore, my Internet Explorer browser does open but for some reason it has no internet connection even though my modem lights are all on indicating that I am connected to the internet. I must say that I had NEVER used IE and don''t know if it worked prior to this. Anybody out there that can help me, give me some insight about what could be the problem?? Open Question: Dell laptop won't turn on?

I have a Dell Latitude D610 laptop. I had iTunes running on it last night, and the computer suddenly completely turned off. When I tried to turn it back on, nothing happened. There is no noise, no power indicator lights on, and the screen is completely black. I tried doing that trick where you pull out the battery, unplug the AC adapter, hold down on the power button for 30 sec, and plug back in...no luck! Anyone have advice on what the problem might be and how to fix it? more

I left my laptop on for 20mins. When i came back the screen was black. I was shaking mouse but it didn't work. The lights are on but the screen is black. I pressed the switch off button to switch it off. After all lights went off and it was switched off , I tried to switch if on. But it went black again. Open Question: laptop shuts off when unplugged?

recently i switched power adaptors for my laptop. and it seems the new adaptor was stronger then the normal one it took. the laptop icon says fully charged, and the pc says the battery is working normally, but when i unplug my laptop the whole thing shuts off, and the light that normally lights up on my laptop isnt lit now. what is wrong? i even tried another adaptor meant for this particular laptop.but what is up with the power adaptor light on the laptop not lighting up now, even when its plugged in. more

Open Question: Can you suggest a good laptop to buy under $500 for writing?

I'm not a PC expert, so I'm looking for help with this one. I can find a lot of the PC's online in my pricerange, but often see bad reviews that make me nervous. Here is what I am looking for: - The main use of the PC will be to write with, so I don't need the latest processor speed or anything. That said, I would also like it to be able to run some programs, surf the web and stream video, or run multiple applications (such as having a few web pages and few Word docs open at once with no problem) - Would like something on the smaller end. - I know I don't want one of the 10.1" netbooks, because the keyboards are too small to type with and fit my wrists on. I would like a full size keyboard, and a screen probably no smaller than 12-13 inches. - But when you start to get over 14 inches in the screen size, weight seems to become a concern.I want something thin and light enough to be able to carry around in a backpack. - Extended battery life. I would like something with a long battery life, as I will likely use it on the go a lot for extended periods while not near an outlet. Thats about it, got any suggestions? more

I have a hp laptop and it's about 2 years old. Today when i went to turn it on, i clicked the power button. The computer sort of turned on because all the lights came on and it made the familiar noises but nothing comes on the screen. The screen is completely black. Usually when I'm worrying about something, I dream about it. Lately I have been worried about my crush. I'm scared he's gonna find someone and I'm not gonna have a chance to become friends with him. Last night I had a dream that I was sitting on my bed. It was nighttime and my light in my room was off, but I had my laptop with me on my bed. I was on facebook and saw a picture of a guy(who I assumed was my crush) and a girl. It looked like they were hugging or he was kissing her on the head. But the picture was also very dark, so I couldn't make out the picture well. There was someone else in my room. It was a girl I think. She looked at the picture and said, 'it's in the past. That was in the past.' I don't know if the guy was my crush or not, and I don't know if it was a good dream or not. What do you think?When I mean good dream, I mean that I don't have to worry about it, or that it doesn't mean anything. more

About three weeks ago I had to go to the hospital because I had shortness of breath, rapid heart beating, sweaty palms, shaking and a minor headache on my right side of my head. I wasn't drinking liquor or smoking anything. Just relaxing and had just got off of my laptop and was going to bed, and then my mother called the ambulance. I recently had a cold a week ago before this incident, the doctor at the hospital had asked if I was stressed I said yes, somewhat due to school etc..he checked my ears and said it might be Veritgo. But maybe a panic attack. By the way, ill be on the bus or in class mostly, which is where I feel mostly light headed. Ill have to either breathe in and out and ignore it, drink water or walk out of class for a few minutes. They tested for diabetes, and nothing. My grandmother and mother both have Thyroid disease. Im going to schedule for a follow up doctor appointment which I was supposed to do immediately after the hospital but due to an insurance wait, I decided to wait a while. I know you guys arent doctors but I would like to know if anyone felt the same way and if so, what was is that you had? Thanks. more

I need it for college. I am going to major in Software Engineering. I download a lot of music, movies, and pictures. I do some video editing and light gaming. It does not have to be very lightweight but easy to carry. I want a screen at least 15 inches. I also want it to have about 500GB hard drive, 2 to 4 GB of RAM, Intel processor, ATi or NVIDIA graphic card. I also need a printer, scanner, and flash drive. Open Question: laptop wont boot up please help me !!!?

alright ... the other day before school i left my laptop on and went to school when i returned home my laptop was off so i attempted to power it up it did and got to the desktop then completely powered off so when i retried the screen wouldn't come on and the lights on the laptop (power switch some orange light and the hard drive light) were blinking. so i removed battery. nothing. i took out each piece of hardware (ram hard drive bios ETC.) and still nothing. when i have the laptop plugged in it does the blinking lights but when i dont have it plugged in it comes on for about 2 seconds and immediately shuts off WHAT CAN I DO PLEASE HELP more

Open Question: BoyFriend keeps passing out?

My boyfriend has always been a bit succeptible to falling asleep easily when hes tired, but these past few months its been worryingly strong. If hes even the least bit tired, he gets from slightly worn out to really sleepy in about 5 minutes. to the point i can look away for 10 seconds then hear him snoring his head off. every day, nierly, hes out for the count faster than normal people... but if something stops him actually falling asleep properly hes fine for about five minutes. but it does mean the odd laptop has fallen to its death while hes on the couch. but he can lapse in and out of sleep too, hes been asleep for 3 minutes and then wakes up feeling like hes had a full night s sleep. for about 10 minutes then hes back to sleep again. its so quick though. sometimes he doesnt even need to be tired, he does it on car journeys, I can look over and hes fully awake. stop at the traffic lights and hes out of it for a few minutes. now he is slightly overweight, but not grossly overweight. a cute belly never hurt anyone. he does have a small heart probolem with irrelgular heart beat. hes been getting chest pains too. suggestions might be helpful. Im really worried. thanks Dave (PS. Im one of these people who find it hard to sleep. when i get to sleep i can never be woken up without the aid of an unreasonably loud noise. wich works for me because he cant wake me up if i snore, just rolls me over. I do find it rediculous that he manages it in about 5 minutes of starting to feel tired, but we do annoy eachother with both our snoring, how to stop? D:) more

Sorry I did post this a few days ago but lost my user id and password so re-signed up and posted again with an update at the bottom. Big thank you to all that replied on Sunday Here it is : Okay will try and keep this as short as possible was with my gorlfiriend for 2 and half years, she is my friend,lover and my soulmate, she is the one I want to settle down with, have kids with and grow old and grey with.....BUT..I'm an idiot!!!! started about a year into my relationship with her, she found some old pictures of an ex girlfriend on my laptop (nothing seedy just general ones) I honestly didn't know they were there, this as you can imagine started a lot of arguments (why is she on there if she is your ex etc) a few months later my girlfriend found out that I was stuck in a mortgage with another ex girlfriend and I didnt tell her (how could I?? I was scared she'd run a mile if she found out so I tried to deal with it myself) yeah I know what an idiot I am!!! should have told her but I got scared... So the arguments kept going on and on,and I tried every way I could to get the ex off the mortgage but the lender would not have any of it. It got to back end of last year, I made a promise that I would sort the mortage out once and for all as my wages finally went up and I wanted us to move on with our lives, get this off our back and finally be happy with each other... so i tried again and again, by christmas time the pressure on me was beginning to show, and I started drinking more and more as a release, we had a big bust up at christmas and since then she has been distant from me, I got worse with drinking, became paranoid that she was cheating, all I wanted was for her to say that things would be okay but she had built up her defences by then and I was slowly hitting rock bottom...anyway she called a month ago to say she needed a break from us as her head needed a re-boot, I understand why, but I was so gutted, it's the hardest thing I've ever done letting her go, but I know she needs to get back to being her again and I'm glad of the break too, I've stopped drinking completly,and feel more alive than I've ever done?? and as I cant get the ex off the mortgage I've put the house up for sale, hopefully wont be long before it's sold. I've text my ex and have opened my heart to her, said that I understand why she broke up with me, and also told her that I love her more than anything in the world and I think we are worth fighting for and I'm never going to give up on us, we do txt each other a bit now and she's been asking when Im back at work (we work in the same building) as she's not seen me for ages, but I dont know what to do?? dont want to constant txt her with me feelings and dont want to go all matcho no contact..."you come to me routine"..it's not me. she's just txt me now about her weekend, says we should go to a new pub she's found together someday (with a kiss on the end) Any ladies out there with any advice for me...I'm kinda lost?? Okay update from Sunday, my ex and I met up on Tuesday for a coffee break at work, as soon as we saw each other we smiled (good sign) and she grabbed my arm slightly? we chatted random stuff, kept it light, for about 20mins non stop like we'd never been apart for a month (good sign I think?) and whilst chatting she was touching and holding my arm, play slapping my hand a lot whilst talking to me and laughing.We emailed a bit afterwards We met up again on Wednesday although not for coffee, she called to say she was too busy but she would come down to my floor to say hi and to have a chat, which she did, again kept it light and funny, we mailed again and ended the mails with a kiss. I txt her goodnight last night, she responded later with a goodnight and a kiss. Okay today...we met up again on my floor in the corridor, we chatted again for ages, keeping it light and was mostly about tattoo's (as we both have and are getting new ones) she was very touchy with me today describing where she's getting her tattoo (on her back) and again the arm holding/touching (and she complimented me on my shirt??). then things kinda went random (I think) she told me a story of her in the gym showers last week, she made a point of telling me (a few times) that she was naked in the shower (I guessed that she would be) and she had an argument with a woman...whilst doing telling me the story she kept putting her hand on my chest?? until she was done??? (whats that all about?) Then she said that her brother asked who she was texting last night, she said it was me...he replied "you've split up! that's odd you txting each other? " she said that she wants to keep in contact with me. She asked if I was okay with this and I said yes but it is difficult for me, bit more random chat then under her breath said "yeah well you've probably been with other women by now" (which I havn't) I said no, and she kinda replied that my next girlfriend will have to get used to her being around me, and more

Open Question: Why won't my Acer laptop power on?

I was watching a movie last night, and I noticed that my battery was nearly dead. So, I plugged in the power cord to charge it, then about five minutes later the whole screen went black. I tried to power it back on, but nothing happened. There are no blinking lights or anything.I don't think it is a socket problem. It is the laptop. I probably need a new battery; and my charger is pretty screwed up too. more

Open Question: my son stuck a KEY in my LAPTOP & It wont turn on HELP!?

I was on my laptop and my 2 1/2 year old son, [I dont know were he got a key from] but he found a key in the house and stuck it in the side of my HP compaq laptop. He put the key into the memory card slot and shoved it in. I didnt even notice he had a key until he pushed hard and then when i pulled it out the computer made a noise like the power went off. and it has not turned on since then. when i plug it in, the light on the side were the charger goes in goes on, stating that its charging. but it will not turn on. ANY IDEAS on what happened to it? if he fried it, shorted it, broke it, ect. and can i get the pictures and stuff off of it still? more

Resolved Question: Did my graphics card just die?

My Nvidia Geforce 8400 card started to run erractically-the colours in a game started shifting lighter then darker. I rebooted and got green lines about an inch apart, then a series of wierd blocks and blobs. Now I can only run my laptop on the lowest possible settings. Open Question: Camera assistant software not working?

I have a Toshiba Satellite A305-S6872 laptop which came pre-loaded with Windows Vista. It also came with a built in camera and voice recording device. It is a Chicony 2.0 USB camera, and the laptop came with pre-loaded camera assistant software as well. When you attempt to preview the streaming image from the camera the assistant software it gives an error message saying "Graph Rend Fail". The blue LED light that is supposed to illuminate when the camera comes on will not turn on. Also i restarted my computer and tried clicking on the Camera assist software and got this error message, "Webcam is either disabled or has failed. Please check your webcam settings" But I cannot find my webcam settings anywhere, I have been searching all over online for a solution, but nothing. Can someone please help. more

When the computer is first booted up the screen has a strong red tint to it, it is visible in the bios, and it fades away as windows boots, after a few minutes of working within windows the back light will go off. Then if I press the button that lets the computer know when its closed, and let it go the screen will come back on right away with the red tint to it, the red tint will go away, and then the back light will go off again, within a minute this time, the time it takes to shut off gets shorter and shorter as I keep doing it. I could keep repeating this by pressing that button to use the computer but its annoying. I have also noticed that if I turn the brightness down, the screen will get a red tint to it, so it seems, when its cool it has the red tint, and as it warms up it loses the red tint, then it gets hot and shuts off. If I leave the back light low enough to display the red tint it will not shut off on me. I realize this is an internal issue and I am prepared to replace whatever is causing the issue, but I need some help pin-pointing that issue more

Open Question: Where can I find a good suitcase for a very REASONABLE price for a two-week trip to Europe?

I'm planning a two-week trip to Europe (approximately one week in England and another week traveling to Paris, Amsterdam and Sweden). I already have one Swiss Army carry-on bag that I have been using for about two years. It fits in every overhead bin no matter how small the plane (it can actually fit under the seat of most airplanes). I travel very light, so I never check luggage (I use "space bags" to compact my clothing and carry a large pocketbook with my "essential items"). However, for this trip I obviously will need more than my standard luggage, but I do NOT want a giant world traveling bag. I don't like checking luggage, and I probably will not use an additional bag very often. My plan would be to send most souvenirs home (I don't buy much anyway). I will need a mix of business casual attire and casual clothes. My electronics all fit nicely in my other bag (I have a small laptop and my cellphone with the usual charging accessories). I would love to find a hard case piece for around $100-150. I basically need a place for clothes, shoes and some goodies I might bring back. Any brand suggestions as well as discount stores would be appreciated (especially those based on personal experience as I am well aware I can just search randomly online--I'm more looking for recommendations). more

I've just got it, i got it out of the box, and put in the disc (like the instructions told me to). Then the first step was plug in the power adapter. Then wait till it flashes to continue. It didnt flash but the orange light just stayed on, but i continued anyway. Then it said plug in a cable from LAN1 in the router to the laptop, and wait for all the lights to pop up, no lights have popped up and it wont let me continue. Why? Within the past two weeks everyone in my house hold has been experiencing paranormal occurrences. My aunt said when she was laying in bed (in the middle of the day) the end of her bed began shaking, as if someone was standing on it and jumping up and down. This happened at night while she was wide awake and the only reason she did not tell anyone is because she could hear me and her daughters talking downstairs, and was calmed down. That next day, my younger cousin said she woke up around 4:00 AM because it felt like someone was pushing up and down on the corner of the bed. My aunt then admitted to having the same experience. Later that night, my cousins and I were bowling and my aunt and her boyfriend went to the store (so no one was home). She was checking out when her boyfriend said he forgot something and to wait for him in the car. He was taking really long and decided to call, but he didn't answer. She texted him and told him she was waiting out front. He called back but all she could hear was static. When he finally came out she apologized for not being able to hear him when he called. He said "I didn't call you." and she said, "Yes you did at 10:12." and he said "Honey, by phone is at home laying on the bed." When they got home all the doors were locked and they walked upstairs together, and sure enough his phone was laying on the bed, with an unread text messages and an outgoing call for 22 seconds long. When my cousins and I got home, they immediately told us about what happened. A little freaked out, one of my cousins went into her room to get her laptop to look it up, when a picture frame of our family that was hanging on the wall was on the floor (face up) When she went to put it back, she realized it's one of those frames that has two nail head holes that you actually have to lift it up and pull it out to get it off of the wall. The next night my aunt began seeing glimpses of a little boy in her hallway outside her bedroom door. She never got a good look at him and only saw that he had blonde hair. A few days later, and a few more glimpses, he appeared in the middle of the night and was smiling and laughing for several seconds. She saw that he was wearing old overalls and was about four years old an appeared very happy. After talking to her friend about it, my aunt decided he was probably a friendly ghost who just wanted some help. So that night when her boyfriend was at work she decided to confront him. She felt like an idiot but she muted the tv in the middle of watching it and said "We don't wont to hurt you and we're not afraid of you, we just want to help you. If you want us to help please give me some sort of sign." She unmuted the tv and not even a minute later the strangest thing happened. at the end of her bed is a fan that always blows from the bottom of the bed towards the headboard, and anything that is light enough to be blown away is blown up against the wall. But a receipt that was sitting on her headboard floated off of it (against the wind of the fan) and landed next to her hand. A little shocked, my aunt goes to put the paper back and of course the fan pushes it up against the wall. This sounds crazy, but my aunt is now convinced the movements on their beds were him jumping and playing on it, and he somehow called her because he missed her or was giving her some sort of sign. Also, he wanted to take a close look at the family portrait that was hanging relatively high. We all think he somehow looks up to her as a mother figure because she is honestly the most loving person I know (she took me in and adopted me this past summer when my parents weren't fit to care for me). This weekend we plan on going to the library looking up records on our house, which is only 50 years old and they have been living here for 16 years. We're not sure what we'll find but we're just looking for some advice. We do not want to force this boy out but would like to help him pass on. Does anyone have similar stories or have advice on what to do next. Most of us were skeptics until now, but we honestly believe something paranormal is happening to us. more

Working on a Dell Inspiron 1525, it had a cracked screen, bought a replacement from my trustworthy source. After replacing it comes up a solid blue screen, its bright so it can't be the inverter board or back light. An external monitor works fine, video cable is properly connected. Could it be the video cable was damaged along with the screen? Anyone ever experience this? Any advice will be appreciated. more

Hello. First of all, this is the suggested category to put this in, so. To begin I will tell you about Justin. This is an 11 year-old kid and is the most obnoxious kid ever. He thinks he is 20, and thinks all love him; gels his hair excessively and the worst of all, ruins every sleepover or get-together plan our other friends make. He sneaked his way into our group of friends which number 6 in total without him. We all didn't mind at first but now hat him. Matthew(a friend) and I have come up with an ingenious idea to rid ourselves of this pest. First we created this military thing called Black-Masks (Copyright belongs to us), and created a contract we had Justin sign. This says stuff like, "You must obey all things officers say, and if not can be punished in any way." By the way Black-Masks where black trench coats with ski masks. Next we plan to have a sleepover and film the following... First we will have him do 50 push-ups as he claims he can do more than that. Secondly we will have him crawl though this home-made barbed wire thing, and if we hear him we will punish him. We will make him shoot targets, and throw "frag-grenades" in a box, as he claims he is an excellent shot. We will make him fight Matthew, who is very brutal, in the dark. Mat will have Night-Vision-Goggles on too. Thirdly we will make him walk through an obstacle course without us (guards) hearing him (like Splinter Cell) and if we hear him he is punished. After that he will have to walk from a specific point to another point with rusty nails on the ground (there won't actually be any though.) The best part is this: we will tie him to a pole in the dark basement for 1/2 and hour. We will play a voice recording of a female voice saying in a creepy voice "From the Bottom of My Heart I salute thee" and this plays for 19 minutes. Then we will have zombie effects. Matthew will then say "Not that...the red hot iron" and we will tackle another friend, Louis to the ground and say "got him." This will freak Justin out. During this 1/2 hour we will go upstairs and party. Then comes the "Test of Courage." This is when we put James (another friend) in a coffin covered with a black cloth. We will have Justin open it. James will suddenly put his hands on Justin's throat (not choking, just touching his throat.) As this happens (in the pitch-black) Matthew, Louis, and I will scream and bang on drums. Then we will suddenly stop and order Justin to lay on the "table of surgery." We will have pitch-black as usual, and suddenly we will have shine a flash-light on Matthew suddenly as he picks up and axe and make it look like he is going to hit Justin with it. Then we will leave Justin to panic, and eventually he will realize what happened. Matthew, Louis, James, and I have gone through this "training" already and got about 9 out of 10. Justin has gone through some real military training such as: running, air-soft fight, climbing, and got -45 points. We will let him pass the above "Training" to make him feel better, and he will be a 2nd class private. In addition to the above, we will not let him in certain rooms of the house saying they are "Officer Only." Anything with Corn-Syrup, Matthew's mom won't allow in her house, but she did this time, and we will say that the soda is allowed only to officers and privates who perform special duties. In other words we won't let him have any of the soda. I also have my high-tech laptop he won't be allowed to use for the same reasons. So, what do you think about this, is it wrong? Guys the biggest problem that could happen has arised in my mums laptop, Well it's a very healthy laptop it has been here for about 6 months and as such we do not have any warranty. It is a notebook, Toshiba Satellite L300 (2CW is at the back) ok since my mum first got the laptop it was very good and still it to do this day very healthy not been dropped once and i even customized it for security not that would matter since all my mum uses on the computer is facebook and it's hers, just as a precaution. Well here's the problem, short story is my mum complained to me saying it wouldnt turn on when i got there it looked it was on as in every light was on and there was no screen ok i tried turning it of but it wouldnt let me and i was very suprised to be honest considering i the age of the laptop, the security and the fact all mum uses is facebook doesnt really make sense. I was forced to remove the battery cause after about 5 mins of turning it of it wouldnt do as it was told. Please keep in mind that the night before it was working like we bought it and this only happened the morning my mum went on it and found this problem so it was all of a sudden and we havent and i know this for a fact that the system is clean from bad software and is not internally damaged from being dropped unless she did it when i was not there lol. Anyway, now the laptop will not even get the chance to show the POST screen, it will not even turn on long enough to see the screen. it is not even a second, its about a quarter well anyway, this is really inconvienient and as such really annoying and i was hoping if anyone would give me there best suggestion on what there real insight to the problem is. Remember the laptop will have all the lights on the machine turn on for a quarter of a second and then of and the same again every attempt including the caps light, num lock light, optical drive light and so on. I myself by looking at it would say its a battery problem, but i cant be sure cause I CANT EVEN TURN ON THE MACHINE!!!!! :@ lol. and it's not like im some sort of repair guy who can repair it, no chance so i cant really open it either and look at it, i will be selling it on EBAY for spare parts lol. Open Question: Help! Is my external hard-drive dying?

Hey guys, basically I got a Toshiba external hard-drive, 320 gigs, more than enough for my life-style. I woke up from my nap and noticed the little blue light wasn't on, but the hard-drive's still working, When the I/O switch is turned off and on via the back of the drive, it makes the usual sounds indicating it's functioning properly, windows acknowledges it...Only the little blue light is not coming on :/ This is really worrying me as my entire life is on my drive, music, work documents, forms, pictures, the lot. And the hard-drive on my laptop wouldn't be able to handle it all (which is why I've backed everything up) Any tips/solutions? Anything helpful will be greatly appreciated! <3Also, I haven't just bought this, it was a Birthday present I got about 6 months ago. SO It's not like I can just return it. more
