I have been reading up on this, but the more I check out Win XP help the less I understand. In win 2000 the system used to ask for permission and you had to enter a password but all the permission issues have gone out the window in XP...it tells you that you need permission and goes on ...or was that Vista???? I don´t know anymore. I have three systems and they are all running XP Pro and r all part of the same work group, all have internet access. One of them is a laptop (3), the other our system at home (1) and the third in a rental apartment (2). I do not want to share all my files on the system in the rental apartment so that our guest have access to my files; they have their own account, but I want to have full access to these files from home or my laptop when I travel. I have already created a home/office network through the router, but this only works when I have two of the systems at home. The rental unit connects to the internet via a GSM modem connection that is usually on (thinking of changing to a DSL connection....maybe). Can somebody give me a hand here, may be a step by step. I am tired of wasting time on this and not getting my real work done. Greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance moreVoting Question: please help me decide between two gaming laptops?

Hi, i have been having a problem with my home network recently. It seems that all wireless devices in our house (xbox, laptop, desktop w/ wireless card and an ipod touch), can connect to our network, but will not connect to the internet. I checked with out ISP, Bright House Networks, and they checked the modem that they supplied and said that our modem is working fine, and that our router a, Linksys WRT310N, had just died. The odd part is that all items on our network can transfer files wirelessly but with no internet access. I had also tried directly plugging our laptop into the modem and it does not get internet access using the RJ-45 jack. Anybody have any ideas about what is wrong. moreResolved Question: What are the steps to add Windows XP desktop computer and my Windows 7 laptop into my homegroup network?

Alright... I'm buying a new laptop but I know pretty little about laptops/computers. I know things like ram and all but at least last time I went to buy a laptop I came across a lot of other stuff that for the most part went over my head. I have a pretty limited budget of around 400-500$ and I'm hoping to get the most for what I'm paying. My main focus is gaming (But I know this won't be a gaming laptop. But the better it can be towards this the happier I'll be. I don't expect to be playing the newest computer games out or anything with this budget, but some of the older ones would be nice.) Basically my question is can anyone who is really knowledgeable in laptops/computers tell me what I should be looking for specs wise (like what elements are most important, where I can afford to sacrifice things, and things that are absolutely necessary), especially in regards to my budget. Particular recommendations of laptops would also be appreciated. How is this one by the way? A Dell computer costing 524$. Specs are... I connected my main Dynex router (has worked fine for 3 yrs but limited coverage) to a 2nd D-link router (in Basement) via cat 6 cable (LAN - LAN) and configured the 2nd router as an access point (I think that the correct term). Upstairs router has 1 dell 8400 and an EPSON Workforce 310 printer wired to it, downstairs router has an Xbox 360 wired to it. I have 4 Dell wireless laptops and 1 wireless Wii and I want to access all of the Computers, printers etc from each other. 2nd router has DCHP and NAT disabled, a static IP out side the 1st routers range, all wired and wireless appliances are working fine and "see" each other. The wireless part is causing some issues, I don't want to have to "change Wireless networks" so I have the same SSID, Domain name, WPA2 and passwords on both routers the main router is on channel 1 and the 2nd on channel 11. That said the problem I'm having is the laptops don't seem to be picking up the stronger signal as I move between the routers? The laptops are using different Windows OS (2 on XP Media center 2002, 1 on Vista Home premium 2007 and 1 on XP professional 2002) The wireless connection Icon in the bottom tray shows a weak signal but when I open the wireless connection status it shows an excellent signal (and sometimes visa versa!) when I view wireless networks some times I see 2 of mine (same name) some times not, it's very frustrating! What am I doing wrong or is there a better way of seeing how strong a signal you are receiving? moreResolved Question: How do network range boosters work?
My best friend's parents just cancelled their internet, and my friend is a university student who needs the internet for school. She is only working part time and can't afford to pay for an internet connection at home, so she uses her neighbors wireless connection that her computer picks up. However, it is really bad, so if she moves her computer like a foot to the left it cuts out. I have heard about the range boosters that plug into a laptop but my question is: if she uses that will she pick up a signal like now only better, or is it something that has to be formatted with the corresponding router (which obviously can't be done in this case). SO basically, can she just plug it in and use it to get better signal strength on ANY network her computer picks up? moreResolved Question: How to connect two computers through "My Network Places"?
I have a desktop and a laptop in my room, both connect via wireless internet in the house. Both are a member of the house's group that my dad set up, [in place of Workgroup] When I go to "My Network Places" I can see my parents' computers, and my brother's, also connected to said group. When I'm on my laptop, I can see my desktop being connected, but I can't log in to access it's shared files. Yes, I'm sure they're set to be shared. When I go to the same place on my desktop, it doesn't see my laptop as a part of that group, like it's not there. Yes, I'm sure it's in the group, right name and everything. What do I do? How do I make the desktop see the laptop? The whole purpose is because I want to burn a cd from the files on my desktop, and the burner is on the laptop, and this would be an easy way of accessing those files. Please help?? moreVoting Question: How can I block access from a website on a wireless router?
I want to be able to block a website from being accessed from any computer that connects to my wireless router. Okay, say for instance I'm trying to block access to The Pirate Bay from my router (no matter if somebody does a Google Search or clicks on a link to a torrent or part of the website) how can I block it? Like basically block the entire website and everything that has to do with it. Now, say a friend comes over with their laptop. Of course I'm going to let them use my internet, but how could I set my router so that not even myself or my friend or anybody else connected to the router can access The Pirate Bay? Could I use Network Magic to configure this? Or is there some other kind of program that will let me block that website on my router? My network configuration is as follows: I have a Siemens Gigaset DSL wireless gateway with 4 LAN ports and WLAN. I have a Belkin Wireless-N router connected to it (for more wireless, so basically I have the Wireless-G WLAN coming from the Gigaset and the Wireless-N WLAN coming from the Belkin). If I configured the Gigaset to block a website, would it also be blocked for whoever connects to the Belkin? Because it's connected to the Gigaset, and the Gigaset is the origin of my internet access and the Belkin connects to it, so would it all be blocked on there too?I know it's possible for somebody to bypass the block by using a web proxy or tunneling program. I don't care about that. I just need the site blocked from people who have no idea what a proxy is, neither would they try doing that anyway. moreVoting Question: Why is my wireless connection not keeping a constant speed?
Here's what happens: I connect to my wireless network via my Motorola modem provided by Time Warner. It says that it's connected at 54 Mbps....and the icon blinks indicating activity. However, even at that speed...some pages take forever to load...if at all. I'm constantly having to repair my connection and refresh sites hoping it will load. Some sites give me problems....some dont -- those that do...sometimes dont (within minutes of trying to load) I will check my connection and it may read 54....48....36...or even 24...a few minutes later (without repairing) it's back up to 54. (it's done that in the time I've written this out, some stuff still doesn't want to load even at 54) I've had Time Warner check the lines, and there's no issue there....they insisted it was my computer. I've run several speed checks and it bounces between 500kbps-2200kbps (which I've told the higher the better/normal) I'm trying to run it now.....won't load. I have a desktop thats farther from the modem that never has this issue. I took the laptop to best buy about a month ago and they said they sent it off and it was an issue with the BIOS and I should be fixed. I'm not. I think they misunderstood my issue -- it isn't that I can't connect to the network....it's when I'm connected it won't stay constant and things take forever to load. At my wit's end I reformatted just before Thanksgiving. It seemed to help it for the most part....but it's slowly giving me issues again. No web search has turned up answers. It's so frustrating to wait and wait and reload and repair and hold my breath and refresh and wait more.....especially since I'm connected, and it shows at 54Mpbs that I'm connected. I have noticed sometimes I send more packets than I receive. I do use Avast anti-virus but these issues happened long before that was put on... Right now, I’m in Safe Mode with networking. The problem started when I woke up (About 30 minutes ago) I turned on the laptop, ( I guess the battery died, I falled asleep On the phone with the laptop still on, But couldn’t of over heated because theres a fan underneath) Anyways, I turned It back on. It got all the way to the part, right before the log-in screen. Then after, it just went black, This happened to me before, like 3 days ago. I loaded In Safe Mode, Opened Tune-Up Utility’s. And ran “Restore Deleted Files” There was a “bootex.log” i restored that, restarted my computer & that fixed it. Now I do it again, & It doesn’t fix the problem. (Tune-Up did say it was a bad file) I have a Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2, & its a compaq. The stickers on the laptop says the drivers are “AMD Turion64, Nvidia Graphics, & Broadcom Wireless” Now I can just restore my computer to brand new, But I have files I don’t Wanna throw away. Any ideas whats causing this problem? moreVoting Question: Networking 2 computers 1 which is wireless to share same printer.?
I bought my parents a lap top with windows 7. They currently have a desktop with XP and a wireless linksys router. I can get the internet working wirelessly on the laptop, but can't get it to link with the XP computer to share the printer. I had no problem linking 2 xp computers together with a wire on the same router. The windows 7 and wireless part is giving me the problem I guess. moreResolved Question: Computer is connected to the internet, but can't access update servers? Help!?
Hi all - hoping someone can point me in the right direction here. At my work in a small office I'm the one who knows the most about IT, so everything like this gets thrown my way. Right now I'm working on my boss' personal Vista laptop, which is full of viruses/spyware/whoknowswhat. It had Norton on from purchase, but the subscription has expired and I've removed that using the removal tool. The machine will surf webpages quite happily through our office LAN, but I can't connect to any update servers - Windows, Avast, AVG, Spybot S&D.... Other machines on the network are fine. My guess is that there is something in the malware that is stopping me? I've tried with the firewall both on and off. I'm trying to put a free virus checker on (have tried Avast & AVG Free), but they all seem to need an additional download as part of the installation. Can anyone recommend a program that doesn't? I can download the whole file and move it across on a pen drive if necessary. Thanks - malwarebytes has got me on the way, virus checker has downloaded successfully and is scanning now :) moreVoting Question: Should I get a laptop or desktop?

I want to set up a media server for my home network. I have a laptop, an Xbox360 and members of my household have a PC. I want to set up a dedicated part of that network to hold all my media files (music, video and photos) that I can access using Windows Media Center on all of the machines connected to it. Is there a piece of hardware I can buy that will do just this, or will I need to set up a dedicated computer that will hold one or two large hard-drives that can be accessed remotely? moreResolved Question: Can someone edit this? Easy 10 points!?
The great debate windows vs. mac laptops people are generally loyal to their favourite. Here’s a few facts that could help you change your opinion on which one to buy. The first myth is that Macs can’t do everything a PC can do, well now with the technology of the newer Macs using a Intel Core Duo processor, so the fact that your Mac can’t do everything your PC can is untrue, not to mention you can run a windows on a Mac The next one is that macs get less viruses then PC’s, well this is true only because there are so much more pc’s then macs, and people are making viruses to infect larger part of people with computers. Well if macs were the most used computer then obviously most of the viruses would be for macs. Windows has a lot more and useful programs then a mac, not to mention a larger variety. Windows also has more programs specifically made for it. But that’s nothing because you can run windows on your mac, so problem solved. Probably the only downfall of a Mac is that because of the lack of programs you have to look harder, or go to a local electronic store and pick up the program. Windows Has a greater selection of name brands and usually cost less, sometimes the luxury ones cost more. The bottem line is I would have to say that a mac is better simply because a Mac can run windows and it connects to windows networks, and can run windows keyboard and mouses. if your going to be using the computer a lot I definitely suggest a Mac, but if your going to use it for a once and awhile thing, then maybe get a Windows because there a lot cheaper, there both reliable computers. moreResolved Question: Help with a Toshiba Satellite P35?
Ok, I have been repairing and custom building computers since I was 13 I am now 21, and this is just the strangest thing I have ever seen. I have a Toshiba Satellite P35-S6053 that I received from a friend, he claimed that the only problem was that it wouldn't charge. I fixed that problem real quick, he had it hooked up to a 12v 60W charger, this beast requires 19v 120w. So now I have the computer powering on, apparently when the computer stopped working for him he was in the middle of a Windows XP upgrade, the disk was even still in the drive when I got it. But the upgrade kept failing. I have tons of windows, Linux, and even osx86 disk's laying around, and this is where I started noticing problems. Ill just put them all in list form. 1. Wont boot from a CD unless I remove the HDD(Boot priority is set wrong) 2. Wont let me enter bios setup(its like the F2 key doesn't work, I even tried a external keyboard) 3. I CAN press F12 to enter boot list(but then it wont let me select anything, its like the arrow keys then stop working) 4. I removed the HDD, booted windows setup, and reconnected the hdd as soon as it said "press any key to boot from CD/DVD" I was able to navigate through the windows setup until I was ready to install and it said "press enter to continue" it wouldn't let me press enter. BUT if I press F3 to quit the setup I tells me to wait 30 Seconds OR press enter to restart now, and at that point I can press enter to abort the install. 5. I placed the HDD into another computer, installed windows on it from there, put the HDD back into the computer, and when I go to boot windows I get to the screen where it says "Windows is loading files" and it has the grey loading bar. But it only makes it about 75% and the computer restarts. I am at a complete loss, I have never experienced anything like this before, I have tried re-flashing the bios, and replacing the ram(didn't think the ram thing would work but I was worth a shot). At this point I have no clue what to do. The next thing I'm going to try is to boot from a ubuntu live CD, but even if I can get it to boot it still really wont fix my problem. I have a Windows 7 desktop and a macbookPro at my disposal to aid in me fixing this. (well technically the macbookPro is a Acer aspire 5920 that I have natively running leopard 10.5.8, but its just as good as the real deal.) And as soon as I can fix the DC jack on my old gateway notebook I will have that too. I mention this because maybe there is some swapping of parts I can do, or maybe a network boot. ( note I have never done a network boot in my life, but if someone could walk me through it maybe it could work.) Please there has got to be someone out there who could help me with this, This laptop is a beast and I would love to get it working again.I have completely replaced the memory and still no luck.Alright!!! I fixed it. After disassembling the computer i found the CMOS battery and De-soldered it and soldered it back on after about 10 minutes. That completely reset the bios, all of the problems still existed except with the bios reset to factory default i was able to boot a CD. I went to boot a Linux live CD and got a error message reading "CD/DVD boot enabled please release shift key to continue". After seeing that i connected a usb Keyboard, still no luck. Then it just hit me...I removed the laptops keyboard, and now all if fine. The shift key is not stuck, as a matter of fact the KB looks almost new, but there is a weird bend in the ribbon cable and i believe it was shorting out. moreResolved Question: Is the airport in my MacBook Pro failing?
I bought a MacBook from a very trusted friend. he told me there was nothing wrong with it and that he had replaced parts in it recently and made sure everything in it was top notch. Like I said, he's very reliable. Well, about two months ago the hard drive crashed. He said he had just replaced the hard drive and had even given me the warranty for it because it was less than a year old. I got a new hard drive and got it in no problem. About a week before I got my new hard drive (and a week before it crashed) my wireless started acting funny. I could only get a connection in certain areas of the house. After I replaced the hard drive (which we did in Panera), the wireless worked fine. I took it home and it was still kind of funny. I narrowed it down to maybe our internet sucking, as I know it has in the past. Well, lately it has gotten pretty bad. Even sitting right beside the computer with the main base, my wireless sometimes won't connect. It drops connections completely, even if I don't move. I've been using an ethernet cable at home when it doesn't work, but when I go back to school next semester I won't have that option. I will need the wireless. I took my laptop to school last week and in class could not get a connection. Everyone in my family on their Dell's and HP's can get the internet just fine with no problems. It's frustrating because I'm taking a lot of online classes right now. Here are some details about my MacBook and the internet. If anyone has any ideas let me know. However, Ethernet connection does. What's happening?
My Fn button appears to be functional, as the wireless connection indicator light is lit - but I can only access the Internet hard-wired. Can there be a simple solution to this problem? Is there an easily replaced part such as one that came up during a gateway.com search that came up with a PDF manual that has a section called Replacing the Wireless Network Module. I have limited technical understanding of computers, but am quite comfortable with the Removal and Replacement of parts, as I am mechanically capable of such tasks. There is another laptop in the house that can access the internet wireless, so the problem is not with the router. Please help me.Hello David and Thank you for your input. My Wireless icon lights up when I hold and press the Fn & F2 keys and likewise is unlit when repeated. My wife's laptop has wireless connection so this all indicates a faulty Wireless Card of sorts within my laptop because all seems to be in working order, but my wireless connection. Gateway wants to charge about $1 per minute for phone support for this out of warrantee laptop. For about $25, I can get a new card that seemingly installs rather easy. Your thoughts from here would be helpful and appreciated. Of course, that goes for any one else who can elaborate on my circumstance. I would even appreciate anyones advice on where to purchase such new parts at the best prices. moreResolved Question: How do I connect my laptop to the Yahoo! Messenger 10 network?

Hey guys, I am in a bit of a pickle here. I have a budget of about $500 and I would like to build a Desktop. My mom is against the idea because she is afraid it may not work even though I have a friend who has built custom desktops and knows what he is doing, and he will be helping me build it. My mom along with my aunt suggests that I just buy a laptop. She argues that I will be going to college soon in 2 years and I will need one for on the go purposes. The thing is, I already have a laptop, it's not the best laptop in the world. But it gets the job done. I would really like to start do some PC gaming, like Left 4 Dead or Fallout 3. I also would like to do some HD video editing with Sony Vegas Pro 9, which I need a Firewire port for so it can hook up with my HD camera. The laptop I have chosen and the one that I have now does not support Firewire and it is very frustrating. What is your take on my situation? My wireless laptop was able to connect to various WiFi networks in my neighborhood, then suddenly it could not. I don't know what happened. I've heard when this happens, one solution is to reset the Network Adapter. How does one do that? I recall doing that long ago and it involved uninstalling the Network Adapter Driver, turning off the computer, then turning it back on again and allowing Device Manager to to detect the Network Adapter and reinstall according to factory settings. Yet one other information source is recommending I physically remove the Network Adapter from the computer which is much more complicated and more of a hardware oriented fix. Can't this problem be solved without physically removing parts? What else might be causing the computer to suddenly not connect to internet via WiFi networks? These are not networks maintained by me and I am not using my own router or internet connection. I am using publicly available WiFi networks in my area. Thank you for your recommendation! moreResolved Question: Does anyone make a wireless router (home use) that takes an expresscard (AT&T) for the internet input source?
I want to use my wirelss AT&T express card service as the source for internet. Is there a way or product (router) that can do this? If not, how do I create a small network with one laptop as the host (with the card installed) and allow other computers that also have wireless capability to be a part of the network. moreResolved Question: How do I protect myself from phony criminal charges for accessing a friend's email account and website?
I had a professional relationship with someone and it went sour. For months we accessed each others email accounts and websites. We gave each other our passwords and full permission to access these accounts as our relationship was in good standing and we trusted each other. Now he is acting so crazy that he is threatening to tell the police that I had no authorization to access his email and website. I'm really afraid because I can't prove he gave me verbal permission. I did a little digging on the internet and I think he has to have my mac address to prove I accessed his account. I'm thinking of just selling my laptop since the mac address is part of the computer. So, if I get rid of my computer will I get this psycho off of my back? Also, can just the IP address give my exact location away? What is the difference between MAC address and IP address? Note: I use an unsecured wireless network for free that apparently a neighbor nearby has so I don't have any internet service or router and such. Thanks. moreVoting Question: How can I prove I had verbal permission to access someone's email account and website?

In WinXP I can log on to a (laptop)computer that is part of a company domain, even when I'm not connected to the company network. I've heard that you can't do that with Win7. Is that true? Can you only log on to a Win7 pc (with a domain account) when the company network is available? moreResolved Question: Can someone still hack my laptop connected wirelessly on the internet even thou I have an antivirus?
