ARGH. Okay, right, basically.. I bought the Sims 3 ages ago, i pre-ordered it and it came early, and straight away, it worked. I was happy, i played it for a while but then my sister offered me to swap my laptop with windows vista for her computer. I said no straight away, my laptop was way better than a computer, but after a while of pursuiding, i finally said yes. So i set up the computer in my room, and went to install my sims 3 for a second time, but this time, on my computer. I put the disc in, the computer made a slight noise as if it was begining to launch, then, nothing happend. I clicked on 'my computer' and the disc didnt even show up. I ejected the disc and tried again and the same thing happend. This was months ago, but ive tried again recently and it still happens. I think i have all the system requirments. I have Windows XP SP3. I would call up EA but i hate things like that, i feel like such an idiot! Please help? I miss playing! Thanks. xx more

i have a toshiba l300d laptop that came with vista home premium, and it was working fine, i've recently formatted the hard drive and isntalled windows 7 ultimate, i couldnt use the built in microphone so i downloaded and installed the Toshiba value added package as well as the toshiba software installer. after installing them, the speakers make this strange noise, you know on the old tvs when there was no signal, and the screen had grey dots and made this sound, sounded like waves sort of... well that sound. so how can i fix this? please help! more

Open Question: Zune and iTunes software not connecting to stores? HELP!?

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop, and I use Zune. I'm switching over to a iPod soon, so I've got both softwares installed. My laptop recently recovered from a Trojan attack, which wouldn't let me open applications or programs, and McAfee couldn't detect the virus. Finally, it found it, and deleted it from my computer. Ever since, everything has been out of order. My music collection, well over 11,000 songs, as well as my 10GB or so of photos were deleted from my hardrive. Also, I can't log into my Zune account, it sends me to an error saying "Sorry, can't sign in right now." iTunes gives me a prompt saying; "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes store. Please make sure your connection is up and try again." I've tried everything I can think of; uninstalling and installing the software multiple times, turning off my Windows Firewall, Deleting programs I don't need that may clog the network, are all of many I've been troubleshooting with. Zune.net says that it can be fixed my doing what I've done so far, not working. iTunes just tells me to try it again later, also not working. Reformatting would be an option, if I were able to find my Vista reinstall disk. It'd be great to find a solution that wouldn't require this, although I have a feeling it's the only fix. I don't know why or how these two just decided to stop working at the same time with the same error. I'd really appreciate some help here. more

i have a toshiba l300d laptop that came with windows vista home premium, i've recently formatted the hard drive and installed windows 7 ultimate, and im using it right now. the problem that i jsut found is that, the button on the laptop to turn on or off the wireless is not working. when i turn it off the wireless light goes out, and when i turn it on, the wireless light lits up, but this has no effect in windows, even when i turn it off it still says im connected and i can still use the internet, where as in vista before when i turned it off i got disconnected and the computer couldnt find any other wireless access points. so why has this happened? can anyone please help! more

Hi! I broke my laptop last night, spilled water all over it, and all my music was stored on that laptop. The only other place where I have my music is my ipod touch 1st gen 3.1.2. I also have a Windows Vista. I haven't downloaded itunes yet, but is there a way to extract all my music from my touch? Open Question: My computer is trashed with Antivirus Vista 2010??

Ok, so I was on my computer transferring songs on my computer and I get a popup saying that my laptop is infected with .trojans and viruses and all that "good" stuff. So I've had experience with stuff like this before, I do know it's a fake scam of stealing your money so I don't need you to tell me that. So I decided to see if I could get my malawarebytes and turns out I could find it in my files. So then I tried to get on the Internet and download the thing again and it wouldn't allow me to do that either. So now I got on my Ipod to find out what this crappy software was doing to my cputer and I turns out I'm not the only who's had these pop-ups. So I shut down my laptop and restarted it and I logged on and I got a black screen when it logged me on with occasional pop-ups and warnings about how my computer is infected. So now that I'm on my iPod I decoded to fond ways to get rod of it. So I heard you could use 'safe mode'. And I tried it. But since I'm not great with computers could you break it down on how to use safe mode to get my computer back and running. NO SCAN WEBSITES! Step by step instructions. Thanks! more

Open Question: GB still used on laptop computer? (Vista, now Windows7)?

I originally got my laptop around February 2009, and it used to run Windows Vista Home Premium. It is a Dell Inspiron 1525, and has had quite a bit of downloading and applications installed onto it, during its time of using the Vista operating system. Today, I just purchased a student copy of the upgrade to Windows 7 Pro and I'm loving it except for one thing I noticed. I understand that I have used the computer in the past, but I thought most, if not all the files would be deleted from the computer's previous life. When I go to My Computer, it appears that the C directory is still using 115GB of memory. While all my photos, music, videos, etc. got wiped, I'm not sure if programs got uninstalled. There seems to be something filling up the hard drive, and I want to empty it so my laptop is like new. How can I completely clear my computer so I'm using the minimal amount of space on my hard drive? In order for me to copy all my files back from my external, something needs to be cleared since the amount of files I have is more than the free space on my computer right now. Open Question: Is it necessary to set my external hard drive to slave?

I took my old xp laptop hard drive and put it into an external enclosure. ATA/IDE. I hooked it up to my xp desktop and it worked fine and was listed as E:. So what is the reason for switching the jumpers? Can someone please explain this to me? I really don't know anything about this so maybe explain it in a way I can understand. Open Question: How do I install my Epson printer so I can use it from a second computer in my home network?

I have an Epson NX 400 printer on a PC laptop using Vista home, connected wirelessly to my home network (but wired to the printer). I set the laptop to share the printer. I have installed the printer on my XP Pro desktop and for the port I chose the printer connected to the laptop in the network (the only choice that seemed to make sense). It appears to install, but when I go to print it fails. The window that shows up to show the ink levels have all the ink levels grayed out. I reinstalled the printer on both computers and set sharing. I can't figure out what else to try. Yeah, I got this on my laptop. It really, really sucks. I have malwarebytes already, renamed it so maybe it wouldn't get caught when I reinstalled. I have the exefix and such, but malware will only flicker on and then it's gone. When I Ctrl-Alt-Del, processes tab is absent. System restore wont work, says I have to contact the administrator. Is reformatting the only way to go? Fuck. more

My computer doesn't go to standby/sleep mode. it's a laptop and usually when I close it, it goes to sleep mode or If I leave it idle long enough with no programs running it goes to sleep. But none of these methods are working not even clicking sleep in the start menu gets it to go to sleep. How can I fix this problem? It's a windows vista. more

This laptop didnt come with a vista cd just pqservice which is copy of vista saved on disk. Open Question: Cannot copy/move files from my ext. hard drive back to computer? But I can view them--Path Too Deep error msgs?

Long story short, on my two-week-old namebrand external hard drive, I can view the files but not copy or move them back to my computer. How can that be? Let me get technical: I back up all the important and memory-hogging stuff from my computer on one of two external hard drives. They are both iOmega eGo 1TB--I liked the first so much I bought a second when it was full. Anyway, the second one is only two weeks old, and I copied lots of important stuff to it. However, now that I purchased a new laptop over the weekend, I cannot export anything off the external hard drive onto the new comp. I can access it, and view, but when I try to move or copy it the Windows Explorer transfer bar times out and the whole computer freezes until I unplug the USB cord connecting the two. I tried hooking this misbehaving hard drive up to my old laptop, which is still running Vista. When I tried to move/copy from the external to the internal, the transfer again times out only this time I receive a "Path Is Too Deep" error message. I looked up the Path Is Too Deep error message history, but there is no way that can apply. First, I am trying to copy from G:/[Folder]/ to C:/[Folder]/, as simple and direct as possible. The file names themselves are short and sweet as well. Now, I transfer files to and from and back and forth numerous comps and my original external hard drive--and even this new second one for the first cpl weeks, until this started--and I have never seen this before. I have tried every possible solution, even moving files individually, but nothing will seem to work. If this helps, I did hook both ext. hard drives up to one comp and try to transfer from the bad one to the good. By watching the lights, I could tell the bad one was spinning away and working to its fullest, but the good one just sat steady and was not receiving any type of input. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Did I end up with a defective hard drive? I really need to be able to retrieve this information and soon. Any advice or feedback would be appreciated, thanks very much! more

Open Question: VISTA Wireless problem?

So its an HP VISTA laptop. It connects to the wireless network but can't access the web. The little connection animation in the lower right tool tray shows that there is local and Internet access, but when i open IE or firefox I get a message saying that the web page cannot be displayed and doesn't change when i click on some of my bookmarks. The funny thing is that the computer can download and install windows updates but just won't connect to the web. The desk top computer that is connected to the router has perfect internet access. I have tried the IE "diagnose connection problem" (windows network diagnostic) button but it replies saying windows didn't find any problem with the computers network connection. All help is much appreciated. more

my iomega hd was working for almost 3 months until last wik my brother borrowed it and plugged it in on a windows xp PC in their school and he said it doesnt work because there was a ballon pop up saying usb device cannot be recognized so i called him to bring it back home to try plugging it on other windows system (we have here windows xp, vista home, vista ultimate and windows 7). so we did the plugging...all windows systems says that usb cannot be recognized crap. its been a week now, been surfing in the internet trying to find a solution tried the plugging out power cord (Pc), pulling out of battery approx. 10 hours (laptop), device manager, system restore, disk management, uninstalling usb components, Tweak UI for win 7, USBDeview, and even tried opening my external HD(cant find the screws and shh***t, even under the rubber feet no screw) non of this methods work for me, i've even updated all the pc and laptops mobo and usb driver, even the service pack of windows...i even searched drivers for my iomega ego and found none, can anybody help??? anybody suggests any solution for this??? I don't know what information I could provide that would assist anyone in helping me. If you need more info posted, please let me know. I would greatly appreciate any help provided. more

Open Question: Why does my laptop randomly shut off?

Everyone asks the same question, but they all notice patterns when their computers shut down, such as the fan turns on or when they run a certain program. I have no such luck. It seems like my laptop shuts down whenever it feels like it. I thought it might be a virus so I literally just reinstalled Vista TODAY and wiped all my files out, but it's already shut down randomly twice today. My second guess was that it was the battery seeing as I received a notice that I would have to buy a new one, but it also said it would be fine if I just left it plugged in, which I always do, but that doesn't work. I tried plugging it into different outlets but to no avail. Would it still be necessary to buy another battery? more

My laptop is Windows Vista. I'm curing using hd tvs throughout the house. My laptop has a Hdmi port,and a VGA pot as well. I've tried using a Hdmi cable from the laptop,to the Hd Tv,and doing the "Personalize", "Connect to projector or other external display" etc method and changing the Tv's input - NO dice. I'm being told I need the VGA plug in,with the RGB connection is needed?? What I dont understand is,if my laptop has the HDMI port,why can't I use it? Do I have this wrong,please help. Open Question: Can Windows 7 upgrade be installed over XP?

Just recently picked up a system that's running xp sp3 and I have access to a free copy of the 7 upgrade through my student account. Can 7 be installed over xp? The computer store that I bought it from is assuming that it's a full version of 7. Or is there a way they can install a temp store version of Vista and then install the 7 upgrade on top of that? I'm also debating on buying a laptop with 7 on it? Would I be allowed to install 7 on more than one home system and could I install it from the initial 3-disk backup that stores the image of 7 from the day that you bring a brand new laptop/desktop home from the store. more

Open Question: Can I find the serial number on pre-installed software on my laptop? Should I call HP for it?

My Artist Edition laptop came pre-installed with Stardock, which makes customized everything, from skins to GUI interface, etc. My artist edition is blue + silver + black on the exterior (including keyboard area) and also on the desktop, etc. It's fully designed, and Stardock does it. I don't want to lose it! The problem with my version of Stardock is that it blocks Microsoft Windows Updates from running (terrible, I know right?). I contacted Microsoft and their response was to uninstall Stardock, or choose the default Windows Vista theme. Then what was the point of me buying such a beautiful artist software-filled laptop? Everything has been dysfunctional the past few weeks since Microsoft couldn't install updates on my laptop, including my touchpad losing function, laptop running slow, etc. Pure mayhem! I took Microsoft's advice and disabled Stardock (didn't uninstall) and Updates ran....now my laptop functions like brand new. I found out through Google and the website that there is a new version of Stardock available, but I need my serial number. I searched through the entire read-me and hidden files under Stardock's program files to no avail. Do you think HP just keeps the serial keys to themselves or can I get it if I call them? more

hey everybody my computer seems to be running fine until i open specific programs. These include vlc media player, movie editing software. Every time i begin to use them it appears as if my computer stops working for around 30 seconds and then it says programs are not responding. After this i am forced to exit out of the program and ocassionally my computer will crash. I do not have any problem using internet explorer , or downloading things off of it. If anyone can leave programs to help me clean out junk, remove problems, or anything u can think of, thank you. I have recently installed ubuntu. it's working perfect. Anyway. I need to unistall it so I could dual boot with mac and vista so I went to format my computer. I started up my laptop "Sony Vaio" pressed F10, which brings you to the format screen. I then clicked return to factory settings. It then loaded up and started to format the computer. it got to a hundred (100%) and then restarted as it should do. But then, it loaded up the boot screen to load Ununtu or windows. But I was not in at the time of the reboot. So when I got in, I was on the desktop of ubuntu. So I then restarted my computer to bring back up the boot screen to load up the Windows. So, I finally reach the boot up screen and it shows windows (dev2) and windows (dev1). I clicked on both but it gives me a error, so I cannot load up windows. So if I unistall ubuntu, would I be able to format my computer again and it will work? If so, how do I fix it more

I have an HP Pavillion Dv2000. I had to reinstall windows, so its now formatted. There is nothing but windows on the laptop. I want to reinstall all the sowtware that it orginally came with, all the hps drivers. I have two discs, one says "recovery dvd 1 of 2" then the other one says "recovery disc 2 of 2." I have put both of them in the cd drive and restart the laptop and it just goes to a black blank screen with a blinking dash in the top left corner. It stays like that, until i take the cd out and it then loads normally. How can I reload all the HP software that came with the laptop orginally? I am using Windows Vista. more

I am having way to many problems with my vista based Dell inspiron E1405 laptop. It no longer lets me download any programs or files from internet and it wont update either. I do not have the windows recovery disk anymore and I don't have money to buy a new one right now but I need my laptop working for school and work. Open Question: VISTA Home Premium Connection Status: Unknown The Dependency Service or Group Failed To Start?

My girlfriend's Toshiba laptop has WIndows Vista Home Premium. She turned it on yesterday and a driver install thing randomly popped up. She didn't know what it was and neither did I so she hit NO when it said to install. After that she was no longer able to connect to the internet. When you hover over the wireless icon it says "Connection status: unknown The Dependency service or group failed to start. I have tried numerous fixes and none have worked. Under the NETWORK ADAPTERS in the device manager all have the triangle/exclamation mark. When I right click and hit properties it says "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device (Code 31). When I go to Computer Management and Services I right click DCHP client and it says "Windows could not start the DHCP Client service on Local Computer" Error 1079 the account specified for this service is different form the account specified for the other services running in the same process. When I try to start Network Location Awareness. It says Windows could not sart the Network Location Awareness on Local Computer. Specific error code 1073741288. I've tried the "netsh winsock reset catalog" fix in command prompt run as administrator and reset. This still did not fix the problem. I thought it might be a firewall problem however when I try to change any firewall settings it says that Windows Cannot Start Firewall Service. She is the administrator on the laptop. We don't have the disk the laptop came with and might not for a week or so. Does ANYONE know how to fix this? Thanks in advance for trying. more
