Open Question: What to do now that my computer has been attacked?

my laptop just got attacked by xp internet security system. i was on my laptop just doing my regular movie watching and browsing and the windows xp security system window pops up showing my firewall and virus protection is turned off. previously, this has never happened. this window pop up has never before popped up like tonight on this laptop. i have the free version avira antivirus installed as well as a free version of sunbelt personal firewall. i ran the scan w/ avira antivirus and it found nothing. the sunbelt firewall was in tact doing it's thing w/ no threats detected. meanwhile the xp security screen is popping up continually asking me to scan and it proceeds to do it's own scan over and over w/out me prompting it telling me my system is full of trojans and adware and malware etc. xp security pop up has my windows listed as "unregistered" and keeps telling me to register my windows xp software for it to take effect and rid my system of all these threats but when i click the balloon to do so, it attempts to open internet explorer and then says it cannot establish a connection. then, i just decide to ignore it all and kept watching my little movie that had loaded and it keeps popping up like crazy w/ all kinds of security threats and "xp internet security alert" and finally the computer starts to slow down. i restarted the computer only for me now to get "XP Internet Security Firewall Alert" and it says firefox is infected w/ trojan.BNKetc... and won't allow me to even connect online!!! what do i do? do i have to take it to a tech now?i have always watched movies on this laptop. that's mainly what my husband and i do online. it is only tonight (watching youtube at that) that this xp bubble pops up and starts going crazy out of nowhere. it always comes on when i first boot and says "your virus protection may not be up to date" or something like that. but nothing like this. is it just that the avira antivirus failed?@tim thanks for that info. i performed a system restore and that brought everything back under control for now. im looking @ how to get rid of that xp internet security. thank you more

Open Question: Why am I forwarded to a different website when I visit my blog?

I have a Wordpress blog. I've noticed recently that when I go to visit it, I'm sent to a different website, usually something spammy looking like "online colleges." I thought maybe my computer had a virus, but I tried it on a new laptop I recently purchased and the same thing happened. I removed all of the WP plugins that I'm not familiar with; not sure if that will help. I usually have to reload my blog two or three times before it stays put without forwarding me. I'm not sure if someone hijacked my blog, or surreptitiously added a crazy script to my blog or what. If so, I can easily reinstall WP, though I'd rather not do that. Any suggestions on what's happening and how to fix it? more

I have an HP computer and an ipod. every time I plug my ipod into my laptop it just makes the connect/disconnect noise over and over and wont connect so i cant add any songs or anything. Open Question: Blue screen of death windows?

My girlfriend got a vaio laptop about 2 years ago. She had vista home premium on it. She had an auto update downloading and the computer shut off. This completely fried it as vista wouldnt boot, it would go to a black screen with a workable mouse. I tried to reinstall it but something keeps happening. I pop in the CD and push the button to boot from it. In that classic blue screen you used to see on ancient computers where it loads all the files, it is supposed to start up an installation process. Instead, it goes straight to the BSOD (blue screen of death) saying windows shut down to prevent damage to your computer blah blah blah. At first i thought maybe i did something wrong like the wrong OS. I had a 32bit OS and thought maybe hers is 64 bit. However this was not the problem as the same result happened. I live booted linux and completely formatted the partition so its completely blank. The same problem occurred with the BSOD. Does anyone know how i can solve this problem and reinstall the computer? I have CD's with different OS's on them and obtaining a certain OS isnt a problem. So please if you can help. Respond in as much detail as you can. more

Open Question: Acer Aspire m1800 wifi will not work?

Just unpacked my acer aspire m1800, set it all up but it wont connect to my wifi network. My laptop is working fine, as is the net work but the desktop just wont work. I have clicked trouble shoot and the message says LAN is experiencing problems with the driver. What does this mean? Is there even wifi on it? How do I make it work? Do I have to use a cord to access the internet and do it that way? Using a cord would mean buying a really long one as there is no close spot for the modems, and moving the computer would be pain. more

Open Question: how can i uninstall conquer 2.0 from my laptop?

my friend installed it a different way. the normal way of uninstalling it DOESN'T work. it's almost like it's connecting directly to his computer or something. when my mouse is over the conquer icon, it says "Location: play (hiscomputerinfostuff/d/Conquer 2.0)...NO. the normal way of uninstalling it doesn't work. it's not on the list of programs.IT'S NOT ON THE LIST OF PROGRAMS. Open Question: computer only shows black and white?

I have a Dell laptop xps m1330, I closed it and reopened it quickly because I forgot something.. when i opened it, all the color was gone, the computer only shows black and white colors (i suspect this is a power saving feature gone haywire) it is running windows vista, and the color works fine when in Safe mode. System restore is broken on this windows installation because I previously messed with partition magic. any solutions? more

Open Question: How do I revert my computer back to normal after fixing blue screen?

I recently fixed a blue screen error the other day by inserting my windows xp repair cd and telling it to reinstall windows xp, it was fixed but now a lot of my settings were changed like my date and time were changed back to like the first time I got my laptop and most of my already installed programs say they're new. Also I can't logg into aim anymore because it's giving me a connection error. My firefox has also been giving me a "untrusted connection" for almost every site I visit including gmail, facebook, and yahoo. Can someone help me? Open Question: Why does my mouse freeze after my computer loads the Windows desktop?

After my laptop firsts logs on and opens standard Windows 7 program, the mouse just freezes. If I move the mouse before Windows loads, it works just fine. And if I plug a wireless mouse into the USB drive, I can always use the mouse. Can anyone tell me why I can't use the mousepad with Windows? This is a new probem: I have had the Laptop for a month and a half (roughly) and it has worked fine until earlier today. more

Open Question: router issue?? pls!!?

My gateway laptop MT6730 wont connect to a secured wireless connection. It does work with an eternet cable and also on unsecured networks. I have two other computers however that I'm connecting to the very same router and they seem to be working. There is an internet setting issue in the gateway that pervents it from connecting to my secured network. I spoke to my router company support and they asked me to contact my manufacurer to enable this setting and that it is a small issue. Someone help!!! more

Open Question: Why won't my laptop play DVD's?

My laptop wont play any discs. In my computer it shows up as being able to read the discs, i can also install games to my computer BUT i can't play them after they are installed. ISO's wont work either. They show up, and i can view the files inside them. but i cant play the discs. i've tried civilizations 4, Sims 3, and Spore (which i have the discs for :/) and the ISO for civilizations 4. none of them worked. Nothing happens when i press play, it just does...nothing. help me please?oh forgot to mention, i have windows 7 proffesional. i had to have my computer wiped for a virus before but before that i could play COD4 on it just fine. more

Open Question: Would upgrading my RAM by 512MB really make a difference?

I have the first generation iMac G5 with the PowerPC 1.8GHz processor. Currently with 1.5GBs of RAM right now, max is 2GBs. I run CS3 and Lightroom 2 a lot on the computer and it's slow. I'm wondering if it would make a difference when editing pictures using those programs. I have a webinar coming up where I need to multi-task - skype, video capture AND having CS3 open. I'm not even sure if the iMac would be able to keep up. Upgrade by 512MBs or buy a new iMac? If 512MBs really makes a difference, enough to hold out on a new iMac right now, that would be great. I'd love to get my PC laptop junked out to have that $ go towards a new iMac but I can't wait forever! more

Open Question: How to set up wireless internet in dorm room?

Hi, I brought a wireless modem from home that I am trying to set up. It is a Belkin model. At home, I plug it into our high-speed internet modem, and it allows me to use the internet wirelessly from my laptop. But here, we don't have a modem, we just have a sort of box that allows internet cables to be plugged in. I don't have the instructions; how can I set this up (if I can)?? I need to know where to plug the cords in... At home, this was how it worked: Power cord goes from Belkin into outlet Yellow internet cord goes from Belkin into DSL modem Other internet cord goes from Belkin into PC computer. Where should I put these cords in order to get them to work in my dorm room...? Thanks.At home, I indeed plug my wireless modem into another modem. Open Question: How traceable are your internet searches on WiFi?

If you jump onto an unsecured internet connection with your laptop (ie too cheap to pay for an internet connection and your neighbor didn't bother to secure their wifi), are the things you searched for traceable back to you some how even though you don't technically have an internet account? Would you have to format your hard drive or are there some sort of numbers in your computer's basic programming that could always link you to the items you searched for? more

Open Question: Having Tablet Troubles! Help!?

I've been asking up a storm, it's ridiculous. Okay. I'm so frustrated right now. I bought an hp TouchSmart tx2-1020us back in august. I was in love with it until just this past month. I'm not sure but I think somehow the N-Trig tablet service was removed from the computer. I has been a little iffy for the past month, working one minute and not the next, but it has competely stopped working in the past week and a half. I tried to reinstall it and it just comes up saying "fatal error during installation" and that the device cannot be found or recognized. So it must have gotten deleted somehow? I don't know. But whatever. I also just found out that Adobe products ARE NOT compatible with N-Trig multitouch, so even if it was still working it would be worth pretty much nothing. So if N-trig is uninstalled, would a Wacom tablet work with my laptop? Would it work with it if N-trig was still installed? Or should I just call hp and nag at them to give me answers? more

Open Question: My iphone has been frozen on the apple loading screen for the past hour. What can I do to unfreeze it?

I was browsing the internet when all of a sudden it said I could not "activate cellular data network". It froze up and when I tried holding the home and lock button like one normally would, it just froze up on the apple loading screen. I have tried several times to unfreeze it this way and it has not worked. The computer which has the itunes that I usually plug into recently got a virus so I can't plug in to that one. Instead I tried plugging my iphone to my laptop but itunes just gave me the option of restoring it to factory settings. Is this the only option I have? I'd love to take it to the apple store but it's jail broken and have no idea what they'd say if they saw that... Any help is welcome. But before anyone says that I should hold the lock and home button, like I said, I've already tried that.. more

Ok i have a hp dv9930 laptop and at first it started freezing up after you logged into your vista acount so i disabled the video card and now it works fine accept i get blue dots all over the screen and you can not play any 3d games. Open Question: Sharing a printer between windows vista and windows 7?

Hi. I've recently got a router so i can have wireless internet at home and i am trying to set up my computers so i can share the printer. The printer is attached to the vista computer (which is also wired to the router), and i want to be able to send documents to it from my laptop on windows 7. I'm not entirely sure how to do this, but i managed to set up a workgroup, and i printed one document from my laptop as i wanted. But now it keeps telling me the printer is offline and consequently won't print. Can anyone help me find out what's going wrong? ThanksMy vista computer is on, logged in and the printer is on yet it still tells me the printer is offline and wont print..??? more

Open Question: why can't i play video games on my computer?

for some reason when i try to play video games on my computer they come up with a message saying that i am not connected to the internet. this started when i went over to my friends house with my laptop. we downloaded shaiya so we could play together, but when i tried to play it said that i couldn't connect because i wasn't connected to an internet, which i was. then when i got home my computer started to say that i couldn't connect to steam because i was not connected to the internet. also today i downloaded spore and when i tried to play it the game said "The game needs to access the internet in order to verify ownership of this game. please ensure that your computer is online then try again". i want to know how to fix it and why this happened. Open Question: unstable wifi because of other people in the same house?

i have been dealing with an unstable wifi connection for the past month, and im not sure what first caused it but heres my situation: i play a MMORPG game online called perfect world and i can play fine during the daytime, and never disconnecting. however, when my sister comes home from school, she gets on her macbook pro, and all of a sudden my internet connection on my laptop starts to go unstable. the router is upstairs in my sister's room and i live downstairs. but i dont think the problem is the router because 1. i dont disconnect during the day; i only dc when shes using her laptop i've done some researching and could it be the result of wifi interference? because of two computers stealing signal from one another? after all, her laptop + the house's router is in her room. and my room is downstairs :|. is there anything i can do to improve the stability of my wifi downstair? or any other solutions is appreciated >.<! thanks more

Open Question: Can one catch a virus from the websites listed below?

The websites to which I'm referring are YouTube and www.rotten.com. My dad's HP laptop has caught some viruses and he's blaming me and my step-siblings; we all have used his computer in the past. My dad also uses his laptop on occasion, so he could have downloaded a virus through no fault but his own. I am not tech savvy but I told him that YouTube and www.rotten.com are secure sites and there's no way one could catch a virus from them. I am typing on my Sony Vaio laptop right now and I have zero virus protection. I visit the aforementioned websites, a couple of dating sites and Yahoo! Answers and I have yet to catch a virus. Who's right? more

Open Question: Help With Finding A Desktop PC?

Okay, I'm looking into maybe buying a desktop pc. Right now I use my laptop for everything, but it's not really cutting it. I'm not too keen on the technical issue of computers so I was wonder what kind of specs I should be looking for in a computer. I'm a GRAPHIC DESIGN student so I'll be wanting to install Adobe Photoshop Elements and Illustrator, and whatnot. I'll also need storage, obviously; enough for pictures, music and documents. Open Question: Dead blackberry storm and charging doesn't work. Can anyone help? Please!?

So my blackberry storm has a completely drained battery to the point that the phone is completely turned off and can't be started up. I've tried using just the wall charger, but the red LED light comes on for a few seconds, turns back off, and then comes back on for a few more seconds, repeating the process over and over. I've tried repeatedly taking the battery out and putting it back in and I get nothing. So then I moved to plan b. I plugged it into the usb on my laptop getting the "bum-bum" sound from my computer letting me know it recognizes the device and the red LED light stays on now but still nothing. Again, I tried taking out the battery, but it doesn't help. This has happened to me twice before and normally when I plug it into the computer I give it a few minutes and the screen lights up, a white lightning bolt comes on the screen and it lets me know it's charging, but no such luck this time around. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there anything else I can do tonight without having to wait until the morning to take it into the verizon store? Please help if you can. This is SO frustrating!! more

Today i played a computer game (Armed Assault) and messed with the video settings, but seing as it got worse i changed them to default. Resolved Question: Downloading RAW photos from my camera?

I am having trouble getting my laptop to download RAW photos from my camera. It will download all my other photos, but the ones that I have shot in RAW are not downloading or they are blank and I cannot find them on my computer. Does anyone know what is going on and what I need to do? more

So I just want to know what Anti-virus programs people recommend for a laptop and if Norton Anti- virus is any good? Also which programs are the ones that have those green checks next to websites you've searched to make sure they are not harmful. Thanks for the help! Open Question: Dell inspiron laptop saying pluged in but not charging?

Ok so i have a Dell Inspiron laptop modle 1525 i believe with a 64 bit Vista, while the PC is pluged in the computer will turn on and function properly. But the second it get unpluged it shuts off, the computer is not even a year old and i figure thats way to soon for the battery to be shot and there isnt a problem with the charge cord because it feeds power from the outlet to the pc and works the battery just doesnt charge, Help Please!!! more

Open Question: Nothing will open on my laptop. System restore won't work.?

I'm on my friend's computer right now. I don't know what I did online to get them, but somehow I got 30 viruses and some spyware on my laptop and all I really did was go on MySpace. Now I cannot go online or open anything that involves possibly resetting it that I know of. Does anyone know how I can get my laptop back to where it is like how it was when I got it? I have all of the data I need backed up on an external hard drive so losing all of that won't happen. I have no money to spare for a repair service. And System Restore won't work. Every time I try to open it, it just opens Internet Explorer. Same goes for literally everything else I try to open. more

Ok Im using winsdows 7 Hp Laptop 64bit. I Have Around 60-70 Processes on start up. is this normal . i dont even open anything i just turn it on and taskmanager says i have 66 Processes.
