Open Question: Dual Monitors for Lenovo Thinkpad SL410?

I just got my new Lenovo Thinkpad SL410 up and running. I have a flat panel monitor I would like to use with it without having to hook it up every time. The SL series doesn't come with a Thinkpad docking setup like some other Thinkpads so I think I would need a port replicator with either VGA or DVI inputs/outputs. I can handle that part. However, I would like to be able to have dual monitors (meaning two external monitors, not my laptop screen) in the future. My question is a) is this possible and b) do I need to have a port replicator with 2 outputs or can I use a splitter? I don't want a mirror mode, I want the extended screen mode where I can move windows from one to the other. Thanks! more

Open Question: How can I wake up my laptop from sleep mode? I have a ThinkPad and use Windows XP.?

Every time it goes into sleep mode, no matter what key(s) I press, how many times I click my mouse, or if I hold the power button, it never wakes up. I always end up having to hold the power button until the laptop itself is completely shut off, and then turn it back on again. It's very annoying. I would still like to be able to put my laptop in sleep mode, but is there a way that I can set something in Control Panel so I can wake up my laptop? I went into Control Panel >> Performance and Maintenance >> Power Options and there are System Standby settings, only they are timers, not actually somewhere that you could select how to wake up the system. Please help me! more

I have a IBM thinkpad 600x.. I know, lol old. So, I bought some ram online (about 512). 2 sticks of 256 a piece. I try putting it in and powering on, I get like a buzz noise. Take it out, put in the old one and it booted right up. So, I took out the existing and put BOTH new sticks in. Same buzz noise and never left the main page that displays the memory amount. What do I do? Is my memory compatible? What am I doing wrong? more

I want to sell my IBM laptop and don't want any old info left on it. I figure if i take out the hard drive i'm good to go.I need to remove/erase the history,photo's etc correct? I see alot of laptops for sale w/o hard drives but never did it myself so i need to know how to do it so no info is left on it. When someone does buy it they will need a new hard drive of course and...anything else? Using an IBM ThinkPad T23 running XP Pro. My other ThinkPads have Sleep Mode available through "Turn Off Computer" or when the lid is closed. The T23 does not have that option. And under Power Management in Control Panel, Sleep Mode is also not a selectable option. What to do to get Sleep Mode working?When viewing the "Advanced Tab" under "Power Options" in the Control Panel, the drop down dialog box with "When I close the lid of my portable computer" offers only one option - "Do Nothing". With the other laptops, the dialog box also shows "Sleep Mode". more

Resolved Question: Need help for my Thinkpad T30 laptop...what can cause this problem?

I just bought a new battery and they said I should fully charge and drain the battery in the laptop. I did as recommended and when the power was draining it went into a sleep mode with a half moon led light. I could not restart the laptop right after, but for some reason I am now able to restart it when I took out the newer hard drive put in the old hard drive. Why did this happen? How do I fix the newer hard drive to get it going again? I don't think this hard drive would crash just because I was trying to drain the power out of the battery, or could this the problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks.It seems really strange but true. I followed the battery guidelines on charging and draining, now the hard drive won't work. I start up with the "Thinkpad" screen and no hard drive boot with the newer hard drive. It will only start with the old hard drive for some reason.It seems like the newer hard drive is crashed...I still can't believe this can happen just because I drained the battery! more

My brother just got an IBM ThinkPad R51 handed down to him, and it needs some upgrading. I build desktops, so I know a lot about computer parts, but am not an expert in the laptop field. He wants to play some simple games on it with no major graphics needs, mostly Sims games. The graphics card in there now isn't good enough for any games really, and I was wondering if anybody knew of an external graphics card I would be able to install for him in order to play these games. I couldn't find much out about graphics on the laptop and was wondering if anybody on here knew more than I could find. He also needs some RAM if anybody has advice on installing RAM in one of these things. Thank in advance! :] more

Resolved Question: Laptop screen problems, anyone able to help?

Okay, this has only started happening for about a week now, and I'm still not sure what's wrong with it. Just for note, I have not dropped it at all, so its not a broken screen. Anyway, sometimes the screen goes and turns to black, like going really dark. I can still barely see whats there, but I mean its really black, not even adjusting the brightness helps. Its odd because even when that happens, I can still hear music playing that I would have been playing via Windows Media Player, or if I was on Facebook, I could use my arrow keys and barely see the screen going up and down.There's no lines on the screen, it just sometimes at the oddest of times go to black, and I can barely see what is still going on. Note - Sometimes when this happens, if I close the lid of my laptop, wait for it to go into Standby phase, then lift it back up, I can get my screen back, which really confuses me cause this never happened before. Anybody know what the problem might be? I have an IBM Thinkpad Laptop with Windows XP Home Edition, if anyone is interested. more

I just inherited (well, my sister bought a Mac, so I get the crappy old one) my sister's old laptop. It's an IBM Thinkpad and it's maybe 5-6 years old, give or take a few years. Resolved Question: What can I salvage from this thirsty laptop?

My wife spilled a full glass of orange juice onto her Lenovo Thinkpad R500. I immediately turned it upside down, turned it off, unplugged it, and removed the battery. We tried drying it upside down in front of a fan for two days before we tried turning it back on, but keep getting a "fan error" - the fan isn't turning on, and no coaxing with compressed air will do the trick. I can work around this by hitting escape when the Thinkpad screen comes up, but the notebook is obviously heating up (and is still pretty crusty from all of that crystallized OJ) so we always turn it off after about ten minutes. I am pretty sure that this notebook is dead, for all practical purposes. My question is - the laptop had a decent processor and some memory that I wouldn't mind rescuing, if either still works. Not knowing my way around the guts of the R500, I turn to you - how likely is it that either of these things survived? How would I go about rescuing them? more

My old IBM Thinkpad computer broke, third laptop to do so. So I rounded up some cash and decided to go for a desktop to keep any mishaps from happening. I went to BestBuy today and saw the Gateway One ZX4800-02 all in one computer and loved it. I read some reviews though and heard it wasn't too good :/ Then browsing around on my mom's computer (which i'm using currently) i saw the Dell Studio One 19 Desktop, and loved it as well. So, I don't really know what to do. Maybe you can help? Tell me which one is better or recommend a desktop. I want: an All In One Desktop for simplicity, Touchscreen because it seems efficient (and really cool :3) Price UNDER 900. I am on a budget here. I am an aspiring artist, who scans drawings and uses photoshop and it HAS to be able to play The Sims 3. Thank you very very very very much for any help :]Err, I only physically broke one laptop. the other one is fine but has no internet and the third has a faulty video card. Open Question: What is the maximum RAM upgrade my Thinkpad T30 laptop can take with the old 2002 bios update?

I tried to install 2 GB (1GB in each slot) into my T30 but it won't work without the bios update, but the bios can't update because it is locked with a lost password (bought this second-hand from eBay). Resolved Question: Hard Drive Not Recognized?

I've been trying for hours now to get my laCie hard drive recognized on my computer. I've been trying to move my music which is on the hard drive to another computer, due to my main computer having a virus. I've gone through device manager and everything, and it still has nothing there! I'm using an IBM thinkpad for the job...I went to my friend's apartment to see if it worked on his computer and it worked just fine...Could it be that the power needed for the drive is too great for what the laptop usb ports can give? ok so i just got my new laptop on christmas and i downloaded paint.net v3.2.5. ok so im on here and they dont have all the FONTS! They have a few fonts just not all of them like they should. I have had my laptop for almost 2 years and it has been working perfectly, until 3 days ago. It began to freeze ( I noticed that before it froze the screen became a little fuzy... I did a hard shut down and restarted, within a few minutes it did the same thing again. Often the screen will come up black or not at all... I have removed the harddrive... I have reseated the memory and tested both cards and ports... I have removed th CD drive... I have removed the wireless card... My battery is at about 41% capacity I believe it could be my GPU...I doubt its the mobo though because when the screen is working i can see the IBM starup screen and can rarely have it stable long enough to get to the BIOS more

Open Question: Is it safe to update the BIOS in my Thinkpad T30 laptop without a BIOS password?

I don't have the BIOS supervisor password because I bought this off a seller on eBay. I know it is impossible to break through a laptop BIOS password without risking breakage. I want to update the BIOS and embedded controller from the Lenovo website, but I'm not sure if I am required to unlock the BIOS in order to update them. Can this update be done without the BIOS supervisor password?I wrote to the new owner of the company that made this laptop (Lenovo) and they suggested to use the laptop recovery CD to fix the password problem which I tried but didn't work.So far I tried to install the BIOS update but without success because they say I need the password to initialize the BIOS update program! The cmos battery disconnect and pins will work on desktops/towers, but laptops have a totally different BIOS setup that is impossible to break into without the risk of trashing the computer. more

I've narrowed it down to 2: Lenovo Thinkpad SL410 -Intel Core2 Duo T5870 -4GB DDR3 -320GB HDD -$579.99 Sony Vaio VGN-NW240F -Intel Core2 Duo T6600 -4GB DDR2 -320GB HDD -$649.99 Of course I'm open to other suggestions. My price range is $700 max, as I don't do much more than Internet, word processing, storing photos, and running several programs at once (say, IE, Word, iTunes, a poker program). I'd like to get one that doesn't have the added number keypad as I'd prefer not to have one that wide. Resolved Question: how do I stretch the IBM ThinkPad Laptop screen?

recently i noticed that when i turned on my laptop, the desktop screen was smaller than usual meaning that the whole desktop was there but there were blank black spaces on the top and bottom of the screen where the mouse doesnt go either. How do i fix this? Usually on desktop monitors there is a button on the monitor which allows you to stretch the screen in all ways to adjust it according to the monitor screen. How do i do this on the IBM Lenovo ThinkPad T400 series? Ok so my friend sent me a laptop so that i could try and unlock the BIOS password, I am unable to get to the bios currently. The screen shows the POST then locks at the BIOS. So what I am asking is what kind of motherboard does an IBM Thinkpad T60 have? And how would I flash the BIOS if i can not even get into it to boot from a CD? Well I have this IBM thinkpad 600E, and its got a pentium 2 in it. I really want to put a pentium 4 in it, and maybe some ddr 2 ram, is it even possible? I have an older IBM Thinkpad T30 or 40 (i think). My daughter tripped over the cord while it was plugged in to charge. Now, the laptop won't charge or run off of the power from the cord while plugged in. Is there a loose connection now? Can it be tightened easily? Resolved Question: How do I solve this power problem?

Okay, I am having some issues with my IBM thinkpad t43. This is what happened: Working fine until a week or so ago, at which point the computer randomly shut off. It did not blue screen, or show anything. It instantly black-screened, so some sort of hardware failure. Afterwards, the AC adapter did not charge the battery or the laptop alone--However, the laptop ran fine on battery power. So I figured it was an adapter issue, and accordingly bought a new adapter with the same specs as the other one. The new one does not work either. I took apart the computer and have pretty much determined that there is some issue with the power supply between the AC adapter in and the battery. Any suggestions or pointers as to what I should try troubleshooting would be very much appreciated. thank you! :) more
