Vaio Laptops Computers Networking Questions asked

Voting Question: Please help problem connecting to virgin broadband!?

I have recently changed to virgin broadband. I am using 3 laptops the dell and vaio are running xp and vista and have both connected fine. but the hp G7000 (vista) wont connect. unlike the others it was previously running t-mobile dial up and now its having trouble with wireless. I am have been going round in circles with it. Im not sure what the problem is so i will just give you the information i can. I have installed the virgin broadband wireless manager and it finds the network but wont connect. i have also tried connecting it through the ethernet cable but i get a message saying that the LAN adapter could not be found. I have tried removing the dial up and have also installed a WPA driver. i originally thought that it wasn't able to retrieve the IP address but the ifconfig results from the terminal window showed that the IP address has been found and is correct. I have also tried to connect through an adhoc connection but to no avail. the laptop has connected to a BT wireless network before and has no problem with dial up. Im not great with computers and am probably missing something really obvious so any advice would be much appreciated! thanks. more

Resolved Question: My Vaio keeps restarting and I can not reach the log in screen?

My laptop crashed on Tuesday with a whole bunch of pop ups telling me it was infected with all these spyware issues and other sorts of viruses. I couldn't log on to the internet or do anything so I left it alone knowing that today I could buy a new Norton program and just use a ghost program to start from scratch since everything on my computer is on a flash drive anyways. Well I logged on fine and went to reformat it when it restart itself. I was like ok and let it restart. Well then it gave me the different options of how I wanted it to load ie safe mode, safe mode with networking, regularly etc. When I click any of the options it will lead me to a blue screen and restart itself again. I can not reach the log in page it just goes to the loading page and then to the blue screen and then restarts itself. I have no idea what to do! I took the battery out for about 5 minutes or so and tried it but it did not help. Anyone know what I can do?Ok so I held down F10 and got it to recover and got norton on and now it is working :D Thank you guys for the help more

Resolved Question: i need help with my laptops internet 10 points?

okay so i have a Sony vaio laptop and we hooked it up to the internet with a wireless router from belkin. my brother hooked up the internet and it was working fine for a month or so. then my dad went on my laptop and was watching a video on youtube and the video stopped so he refreshed the page and then Mozilla said server not found. what i normally do when my internet loses connection is i go to the bottom right corner where all the icons are and click on 1394 connection status and i hit the repair button and usually it fixes everything but for some reason it wont work and a message pops up that reads; windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action can not be completed: TCP/IP is not enabled for this connection. cannot proceed. i have no idea what TCP/IP is but i go to the properties tab and it says this connection uses the following items client for microsoft networks, file and printer sharing for microsoft networks and the last one says internet protocol (TCP/IP). so i check all of them and still nothing. i have no idea what to do so if someone could explain to me simply what i am supposed to do that be great. my computer says it has a good connection and everything is working and i did reset both my router and modem already. still nothing its my own internet service. i just need to know how to make the internet go from the modem to the router to the laptop more

Voting Question: My sony vaio (vgn-nr38e) won't work in normal mode.?

I'm currently writing this question from safe mode. When I turn on my laptop It starts up as normal but then completley freezes after I have entered my password to get on my account, meaning I have to hold down the button to switch it off. When I do this, I have recently been selecting safe mode with networking. I did a system restore all the way back to the 11th of November yet there is no change. It's really annoying me that if I start the computer normally it takes me to my desktop then freezes and it's full circle again. Please help me :( i can't use safe mode forever. more

Resolved Question: problem connecting to my own wireless network? says "Connected" but will not connect?

Info: Equiptment: Sony Vaio / Vista / Sky netgear broadband / wireless -sony vaio Laptop suddenly overnight won't connect wirelessly to the net? however it does list it as "currently Connected to Sky40... etc..." -The wireless connection is my own I pay for it (both this laptop and my main 'tower' pc operate fine from this same broadband connection via a wired LAN connection) - The wireless LAN switch is set to 'ON' and is lit green. - The laptop recognises the broadband signal as Excellent: 5bars out of 5 - I reinstalled my PC Sony vaio laptop today to see if this was the problem, but it still lists my netgear Skybroadband router as an Unidentified Network?, After entering my network key, it either lists my connection as "connected" or "connected with limited access" even when connected it will not let me log onto the internet??? - I have used this Sony laptop via the same wireless connection for 2 years without a problem till now? - In cmd the Media state is listed as disconnected? could this be the problem? also DNS servers are fec0:0:0:ffff::1%1, (the others are all the same but with 2%2, and 3%3 at the end. Autoconfig IPv4.. starting in 169, and the link-local IPv6 starts with fe80. (however this cmd stuff is above my computer skills) - Seems to be sending but not recieving bytes, speed is at 54.0mbps I have tried: 1: new IP address 2: dissconecting/ reconecting (both Sky broadband and Laptop) 3: resetting the broadband. 4: reboot/turn on off pc etc. 5: dissabling firewall/antivirus (even updating to new Norton antivirus 2010) 6: Entering new network key 7: 4hrs looking through Forums and yahoo answers etc. trying everything. 8: Trying via cmd with ipconfig /release & renew etc (which comes back with "an error occured....) 9: full Re-installation of my laptop 10: In cmd I Tried to ping www.google.com (ping request could not find host...) anyone who has any ideas please let me know. many thanks B.in the end I used the reset button on the back of the netgear router (using a needle to reset).. previously I had unplugged the netgear router from the mains, and I thought this was the same as reseting the router, but obviously not. so the answer was: reset the router with a pin/needle.... Don't just unplug it from the mains. thanks for your help. more

Resolved Question: laptop suddenly overnight won't connect wirelessly to the net?, but it still recognises my broadband?

Please: Before answering please read what I have tried already numbers 1-8 below I bought a Sony laptop 2 years ago, which I have used on the internet (via wireless) for this entire time. suddenly the internet has stopped working overnight (without me doing anything to settings etc)... The Laptop still recognises the Sky broadband (netgear) it even lists it as [Currently connected to: unidentified network, Access: local only], ( the laptop recognises the broadband signal as strong 5 out of 5) the wireless LAN switch is set to 'ON' and is lit green. IT JUST WONT LET ME CONNECT TO INERNET EXPLORER ANYMORE????? my main 'tower' pc still operates fine from this same broadband connection, but only the laptop has decided to stop working? I've had several pc's for 10 years now, and have never experienced any probs getting connected on the net, or when I have they have lasted a day or so, and have been a wired connection problem, I am relativly computer savy, but have tried everything I know: listed below tried 1: new IP address 2: dissconecting/ reconecting 3: resetting the broadband. 4: reboot/turn on off pc etc. 5: dissabling firewall 6: Entering new network key 7: 2hrs looking through Forums and yahoo answers etc. 8: Trying via cmd with ipconfig /release & renew etc (which comes back with "an error occured....) the only thing left is for me to re-install the computer?, but it is a Sony Vaio and this will not let me do a clean install, will only let me try system restores back to 2months, which I have tried but still no internet connection. anyone who has any ideas please let me know. many thanks B.hi there, I reinstalled my laptop, and the problem was still there (did not have this problem when I orig. set up the lap top to same connection) so I tried to connect via a wired connection, and this works perfect. via wireless the ping thing came back with: Ping request could not find host www.google.com etc etc... checking the DNS stuff is above my computer level, so I don't understand it. but the DNS servers are fec0:0:0:ffff::1%1, the others 3 are all the same but with 2%2, and 3%3 at the end. media state is listed as disconnected? could this be the problem? none of the settings have been changed with my Sky broadband netgear? which is just a white box, that I can't change the settings on anyway? thanks for the help guys, but this one is baffling me?hi there ' just me' yes it is my own broadband connection that i use, which I input a network key for, the network key has been retyped and accepted, but did not solve the issue. looking at my network connection details I have a Autoconfig IPv4.. starting in 169, and the link-local IPv6 starts with fe80. also Josh, yep the wireless LAN switch is set to 'ON' and is lit green. I had written this in the above question, also I would not have been able to see the connection on my lap top which status is "Excellent" after the new install, I even had to reset up my sky broadband, entering the password etc, all this was accepted fine, and without this it would not connect. my pc lists as "currently Connected to Sky40201" It now seems to be both sending and recieving bytes, speed is at 54.0mbps but still won't let me access internet explorer??? more

Voting Question: Vaio Laptop not connecting to internet, Help?

Weeeeell. The internet stopped working for a short while (as well as the phone) and when it started working again, all the computers excluding mine, connected to the computer successfully. But my computer is so screwed up. I try to connect it, but then it says "connected!" (after ten minutes of waiting) but I look again in 'wireless network connection' and it says "not connected". [I double click it to connect but then it asks me if i really want to disconnect (when it didn't connect in the first place!)] The internet works for 1 minute when this happens and the computer doesn't even say that the internet is connected. I tried retyping the password (for wireless) and it didn't help. I tried rebooting and it didn't help either. My computer is Windows XP. please help! more

Resolved Question: How the heck do I configure a X-41 Lenovo tablet to recognize unsecured networks?

I can't figure this one out! I have a X-41 Lenovo tablet computer and it is not finding the unsecured wireless connection (linksys) that my other laptop in the room (Sony Vaio) is able to find. Is there a way I can get the X-41 to connect to 'linksys unsecured,' as well? I'm not sure if I need to configure the computer in a certain way or if it a limitation in the hardware. The X-41 is on XP. The Sony is on Vista. Why is it not recognizing or allowing unsecured networks? Any info would rock! more

Resolved Question: Sony Vaio disconnects from the internet when it goes to sleep?

1 year old VGN-SR290 running Vista home premium. I'm not using a wireless network. I keep my lap top constantly plugged in to the ethernet cable. If I close the laptop or let it go to sleep, when I wake it up it doesn't recognize that the ethernet cable is plugged in. Only restarting the computer will get it to recognize the cable and allow me to connect to the internet, restarting the modem does not solve the problem. Voting Question: Problem with Linux connecting to a secured network or Internet in general?

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NR120E laptop. I downloaded Ubuntu 9.04 Linux a couple of days ago. Everything works great; it just REALLY has a hard time connecting to the Internet. It won't connect to my secured wireless network or wired network. It just "tries" to connect for like five minutes and then it will say "disconnected." I can get it to connect SOMETIMES when I RESET the whole router where my wi-fi network doesn't need a key. I know it's not the network having problems because my computer works totally fine when I use Vista. For example, I'm having to use Vista right now to ask this question. I just don't understand what the problem could be. I downloaded Ubuntu to my dad's Dell computer earlier today and it works beautifully online and everything while on Linux. What's wrong with my computer? :( I'm kind of novice when it comes to Linux; therefore, I may get confused easily if you get too technical. lol. I made some of the words capitalized to make it easier to understand, not to be rude :) If you could give me any advise, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks :) more

Voting Question: Why is My Sony Vaio Laptop Not Detecting Internet?

I got a Sony Vaio Laptop off a friend of mine, and it already had some mine errors that needed to be fixed. I had another friend remove a bunch of programs and they said we have to reboot the whole thing and start off fresh-I just need to get the disk to do it. I haven't had any problems with going online until last night. I was using a Cricket Broadband before, but then I plugged in an internet line (big yellow cord) and it was working. Except it was really slow to the point where it was impossible to do anything! So I restarted the computer a couple times and now when I plug in the line it doesn't pick it up. It says "a network cable is unplugged." It's picking up the wireless internet from the NetGear card that was already in the laptop, but for some reason it's not picking up this land line. I hope the outlet isn't damaged, and I hope that when I restore the computer that it'll work again. Does anyone have any suggestions? more

Voting Question: Computer connection problems?

both my laptops cannot connect to an unsecured network. I'm not a computer person, so I really don't know all the details about it. When I try to connect, it says its connected, and it only shows the icon of two computers with blue screens. When i did the diagnostics thing, it says "Windows confirmed that "Primary DNS Server" is currently online, but is not responding to connection attempts at this time." then it also says "The following policy might need to be adjusted to allow windows to connect: policy provider: windows firewall/ filter name: query user" my laptops are sony vaio, and an hp if that really matters. im kind of stressed out cause when i search for a solution i just get all these complicated answers and it doesnt help at all. please help me thank youuu :) more

Resolved Question: Laptop wireless internet-unidentified network?

BTW sorry if this is unclear, I'm not really good at the technical names for things so I'll try to describe them as best as I can. My laptop is a Sony Vaio CR320-E running Windows Vista Home Premium. My wireless card is an Intel WiFi Link 4965AGN. My router is a Netgear Wireless G router (don't know the model). Every time I take my laptop out of range of the router ( to school, Starbucks, a friends house, wherever) when I bring my laptop back home and try to connect to my home network, it won't identify the network. The network appears on the list of available networks, and I click connect, but then down on the taskbar, where the little symbol for the wirless network is (you know, the 2 computer screens) a little yellow triangle with an exclimation point comes up over the wireless symbol and when I hover the pointer over it it says "Unidentified Network (The name of my network)", I try doing diagnose and repair, uninstalling and re-installing the wireless card, restarting my computer, but none of that works The only thing that fixes it is if I reset the router. This does not happen (or RARELY happens) when I'm trying to connect to other networks, only my home network. How can I fix this? Please, PLEASE use laymens terms. I know how to use a computer, but when it comes to the technical stuff, I'm pretty lost :/ So if I need to change a setting or reset something, tell me like step by step what to click on, what to type in, etc. more

Resolved Question: Laptop disconnection problems?

Okay, so we have had a wireless home network for just over a year. Both me and my mom have sony Vaio laptops, and they have never had disconnection problems, even at long distances from across the house. Our router is a netgear router, btw, if that helps. Now, my sister just bought her own (used) laptop a few days ago, and it has had horrible disconnection problems. It is a Dell 1200 13-inch black computer. The only way she can get it to connect is by being 4-5 feet from the router, and she can't move it at all once she gets it in that place or else it will disconnect entirely. At first, we thought it was just the password not working, so we did an ENTIRE reset on the router, and changed the password. She eventually got connected, but she still has to be that close to the router. Is there any thing that we're missing for her to connect as good as we do on ours? P.S. The laptop of my sister's is running on XP, and the other two are identical, running on Vista. Thanks in advance! more

Voting Question: Sony Vaio=Crappy Computer?

I got a brand new Sony Vaio laptop from Staples TWO days ago and it's been a piece of junk ever since: 1. It froze while I was SETTING IT UP!! 2. I cannot use the internet even though our wireless network is CONNECTED AND FULL SIGNAL STRENGTH- to use the internet for a few minutes I have to disconnect and reconnect to the wireless network each time. 3. Last night (second night I had it)... I was in the middle of working on something and had the computer shut it down and I was then bombarded with virus messages. Anyone else have these problems with the Sony Vaio, I'm more than a little ticked off, and needless to say will be returning the horrid thing to Staples today! How could the virus messages be my fault? I'd turned the thing on a whole three times and was reading a webpage when it exited out of that page and bombarded me with virus messages. Anyway, it is going back to Staples... I've never had problems with Sony products before. more

Resolved Question: One computer on our wireless network boots other nearby systems. Why?

I am currently living in a small home with a wireless router and three systems connected wirelessly. We have had a few minor connectivity issues with our router in the past, but nothing that a simple reset wouldn't fix. Suddenly, we have a major problem. The system involves my desktop PC, my girlfriend's Sony Vaio laptop, and her parent's Acer laptop. Every time the Vaio restarts, shuts down, turns on, or goes into hibernate, my desktop gets kicked off of the network. If my computer does any of the above, the same thing happens to hers. This only occurs when both my desktop and her laptop are in the same room. Her parent's Acer is not affected, as it is in a separate room. According to all three computers, the connection strength is "strong" or "excellent," and all of them are well within the radius of the router. I am running XP, and the other two systems are running Vista. The only way we can get all three systems connected is to take her computer into another room, shut everything off, and then turn each system on, one at a time, letting each one connect separately. Once the computers are connected, they can be right next to each other without incident. What is going on here? more

Voting Question: Wireless Router/Network Signals?

I just bought a Cisco Wireless N router. Installed software on this computer and wireless works great on this laptop and PS3 as well. However, my gf's Sony Vaio is not picking up the signal from the router. My network list had about 12 signals listed as I live in an apt. building. Her computer only lists "Free Public Wifi" in the 'choose a network' list. I know her computer has wirelss obviously b/c I've used it. Does anyone know why her computer isn't picking up ANY of the signals in the building. I have the wireless card enabled so I'm stumped. more

Resolved Question: My computer and laptop are having connection problems?

Today, I was attempting to print off some coupons. I emailed them to myself via my laptop and intended to log on to hotmail and print them off on my home PC that is connected to my printer. My laptops internet was working fine, but my computer was stuck on local area connection and said that I had 'limited connectivity'. I restarted the modem thinking it would solve the problem but it just scrambled the wireless and now my laptop is also on local area connection.... :/ It says on Network Connections that a wire is unplugged on the main modem- but everything is connected just fine. I've been starting and restarting and double checking the wires each time before I do and nothing seems to work. The repair option isn't working either- it says that it has encountered a problem that it can't solve automatically. GAAAAH so annoying. I have an Acer Aspire PC with Windows XP and Sony Vaio laptop with Vista. My wireless router is Belkin. Please help! x more

Resolved Question: Please help! Vaio cannot manually or automatically find un-hidden wireless network?

Recently my brother's Vaio laptop running Vista cannot find our wireless network. I made sure that the Vaio's wireless is turned on, and that the network was not hidden. Then I tried manually connecting the to network many times but the computer just says that "A network called (SSID) already exists", and then it directs me to the "Connect to a network" page where our network still doesn't show up. It's almost like it thinks I am trying to create a new network, and I've made sure that I was clicking "Manually connect to a wireless network". I also went to "Manage Wireless Networks" and our network is listed at the top of the list and is set to "automatically connect", but the network is still not showing up under "connect to a network". I've even tried updating and restarting the Airport Extreme his computer still won't connect. It's weird cause my Macbook and Mac Desktop automatically detect and connect to it easily, and his Vaio was connecting just fine up until a week ago (and I haven't changed any of the settings on the Airport). If anyone has any tips or links they would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks! more

Voting Question: How can I get the battery meter icon to show up in my notification area in my Sony Vaio VGN-N320E laptop?

I'm not sure why or even when it went missing, but I have no icon in the Notification area of my laptop. Which is a real pain when it gets unplugged by accident. When I try to customize the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties", the Notification tab has a section called "System Icons", which lists Clock, Volume, Network and Power. The first three have white boxes with check marks and show in my Notification area. The Power one is grey and I'm unable to click on it or use Alt+P to activate it. Any suggestions welcome, preferably as simple as possible, because I'm not very computer literate. TYVM more

Voting Question: Can anyone help with my internet connection with a Sony Vaio?

I recently purchased a Sony Vaio laptop. At home I have two other laptops. They all receive wireless internet including my new Viao. However, every time I restart my computer I have to disconnect and connect to the my wireless internet. Also, when I'm browsing the internet I lose connection. For example, I could be reading the local news and decide to go to msn.com. After typing in the address, it will show the internet searching for msn.com and when it's done uploading the web page its is just a blank page. I check my connection and it reads connected and the network is working fine. I check my other laptops and the internet on those work fine, but my laptop doesn't display anything. So what I have to do is disconnect from the network and reconnect. Once I do that, I refresh and the web page shows. It gets annoying bc I do that several time when online. Can anyone help? more

Resolved Question: The Wireless on my 6 month old Sony Vaio has recently stopped working.?

It happened after I went overseas and was forced to check it as baggage after leaving LAX (Due to my carry on being too heavy), but I do not know if that is related. (I suspect it recieved a knock though, as there is very slight damage on the screen that wasn't there before the trip). From that moment on though, it didn't work. (I couldn't pick up any Wifi in Australia, and at first I just thought there were no networks available. But now that I have wireless set up at home, I know it's my computer (My GF's laptop works just fine). The wireless switch on the front of the laptop is on, but the system tells me it is off. Is it hardware? A Virus? Some system glitch that I can fix? Any help would be much appreciated. Also, on a seperate (But possibly related) note, to use the internet I am forced to use an ethernet cable from my modem (Belkin) to the laptop. I am not sure if it's the cause, but it seems that whenever I connect in this way, the computer will eventually freeze so bad I can't even move the mouse, and I have to restart by holding the power switch down. But I was able to watch an entire DVD with no problems when the ethernet wasn't connected. The hard drive was really full until recently, and the computer could definately use a tidy up of files. Plus, several programs have stopped working well (Adobe Lightroom, and my antivirus software). Do I have a virus? Is there some Modem/Router incompatibility? Cheers and beers to anyone that can help me out! more

Resolved Question: Trouble connecting to public wireless network?

I had this same problem with a Dell laptop before. Now I'm having the same problem with a Sony VAIO. Sometimes when I try to connect to a public wireless network (like at a library) with my laptop, it says it connects, but then it says "local access only" and doesn't let me go online. Today I went to one library and it connected just fine. I was able to get online. Later I went to a different library, and had the problem I just described. I was previously able to successfully connect to the public network at that same library with a different laptop. So I know it's not a problem with the laptops - since both laptops worked at some locations. Since I'm dealing with a public connection, I can't really control the router or anything. Is there something I can do to fix this? Both computers that have had this problem run with Vista. more

Can you tell me if its worth making this change? My current laptop is super slow. Will I even be able to tell the difference? more
