Network Cable Unplugged Questions asked

Open Question: Ethernet Connectivity Problem?

I have a computer running XP SP3, it is connected to the network using cat-5, not wireless, and it randomly decided to tell me my connection has limited or no connectivity. I can unplug the ethernet cable and plug it into my laptop, or another computer, and they get an IP address just fine, but when I plug it back into this computer, it will not get an IP address. Have tried removing the NIC and removing it from the Device Manager and reinstalled the drivers, all to no avail. Is there any known issues with the TCPIP stack in XP SP3? I use Windows 7 on my laptop, and have long since forgotten about XP and troubleshooting problems. Any help? more

Open Question: Why did my xbox suddenly stop connecting to xbox live?

So I recently got Modern Warfare 2 for xbox 360. Sweet game, so I signed up for live for it. I have 2 houses, mom n dads. Xbox was originally at my mom's and it hooked up to live via ethernet cable that I normally use for my computer. Worked fine. Then I switched it over to dad's house during a weekend, and brought the cable with me. Plugged the cable into router at dads, and it worked fine. Then the next day at dad's house, I tried to play again, and it wouldn't connect to the network. I unplugged it, and tried again, still nothing. I reset the router, and tried again.. nothing again. Annoyed by this, I asked my friend if I could use his wireless. So I got his wireless receiver for 360, plugged it into my xbox and tried to connect to the wireless in our house. Originally while entering in the password for wireless, I used the wrong one, and the xbox told me that... then I used the right one and it gave me a form of confirmation. However it still wouldn't connect even with the wireless and the correct password for the wireless. The issue was from xbox to network. So, annoyed once again, I've brought my xbox back to mom's house where it was originally, and retried the ethernet there... it still wouldn't connect to live. Tried resetting router and xbox again here, still no connection to the router. I feel that the issue is with the xbox itself and not the network since the xbox connected to both networks at dads and moms house, then wouldn't go to either the next day. The cable that I used at mom's house is now plugged into computer giving me internet here, so its not the cable or lack of internet connection. I even wrote down the IP address and submask etc from the computer and tried to manually enter those in for xbox, and still wont connect to network. Everything is back to automatic as it was before, and i've just about given up. Any suggestions?Xbox live membership is still active. Just signed up for Gold and was maybe 2 weeks into 1 free month. Issue while doing test connection is connection to my network, not with xbox live. (Or at least I can't tell if xbox live has an issue too, since network connection fails first) more

Resolved Question: Can't connect to the internet on my laptop?

It says the wireless connection is fine, but for the local area connection, it says that the network cable is unplugged, although physically, it is plugged in. Can anyone tell me in simple steps how to fix this? Also, I know nothing about computer talk, so if you dumb down your terminology, that would be great. When you start using words like motherboard and router, you might as well be speaking a foreign language. Thanks in advanced more

Voting Question: How to create a network bridge?

I have a laptop with a wireless air card through alltel/verizon unlimited. I have a wii that I want to hook up to the internet. I have read many posts online and even watched some videos on how you can do this by making a network bridge connection, and buying a network adapter. So I bought a network adapter tonight, and tried setting up a network bridge but something just isn't right. I'm not sure if I'm not bridging it right or what. It won't let me bridge from my alltel/verizon adapter, but it will let me bridge my local area connection with my wireless network connection, but when I do a test on the wii it fails. I can see things in my network trying to change it's settings from local to public etc. and trying to identify the network. All I have in my network connections is alltel wireless internet, enabled-local area connection 5, network cable unplugged-local area connection, not connected-wireless network connection. The alltel is under a dial up, but I can't seem to bridge it no matter what I do, even disconnecting, or disabling them first. If anyone can give me a video or a step by step guide on this would be very appreciated. I have also tried turning off my internet security, still nothing. I did enable and disabled the network sharing and neither one would work.I am also using windows vista. more

Voting Question: Problems with internet?

My friend has an old computer, and just got internet at her house through the cable company. She has an older modem, a surfboard sb5100, that she had used when she had the internet a few years ago. She didn't have the disk, so I downloaded the drivers and brought them over, and installed them when windows "recognized a new device". Problem is, it should be working, loos like it is working on the computer, but the online light on the modem is off, and it is only connected at 12 Mbps. In the Network Connections window, it says Local Area Network- cable unplugged, but it has another connection called "surfboard modem", - connected at 12 Mbps. Need help!! more

Voting Question: Why can't my laptop connect to internet, while all other laptops in house can? (virus maybe?)?

A few days ago a virus showed up on my laptop that would not let me open anything (docs, control panel, internet, even solitaire) all that would happen was a pop up saying "blah blah blah is infected and can not be open, install blah blah blah now" eventually after restarting my laptop i was able to open my anti-virus software quick enough and was able to rid of the virus. So here is my dilemma: My laptop won't connect to the internet. My Wireless Network Connection says "Very Good" but the Network cable is supposedly unplugged. The other laptop in my house works fine. I've tried repairing it, typing all these commands into the DOS, i've just been going down the list on a few different forums but nothing has worked. I believe maybe it's a virus but nothing shows up in my scans. could this possibly be related to the virus i had listed above? more

Resolved Question: How to safely remove my malware without risking my other computer?

I am going to go ahead and assume that whatever malware I have on my laptop can jump to my desktop via wireless network. Here is my question: If I unplug my ethernet cable from my desktop, thus disconnecting it from the network, can I connect to the internet with my laptop without jeopardizing this desktop? Or do I not even have to worry about the malware jumping to this computer? As far as I can tell, it's a few trojans, some adware, a keylogger, and a few backdoors. more

Resolved Question: Can I unplug Ethernet cable from PC and plug into my laptop?

I'm visiting a family members home and they don't have a wireless network in their house, I want to use my laptop for internet purposes, not their home PC. I tried unplugging the ethernet cable directly from the PC and plugging it into my Dell 1545 laptop. My laptop finds the network but its "unidentified" and is "local only." Resolved Question: Wifi and ethernet issue?

Hello, I have a HP laptop that has a built in wireless adapter that works just fine on my network. I wish to use my laptop's internet connection as the connection for my XBox360 using either Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) or possibly network bridge. When I plug in my ethernet cable to the laptop, however, my wireless connection just disconnects and says it cannot find any wireless networks in range. Almost as soon as I unplug the ethernet cable, the wireless connection works fine and connects instantly to my router. I've tried searching the internet for solutions and have tried to change some things manually in my network connections but to be honest I have no idea what to do. If anyone knows the problem and/or a solution to the problem I would greatly appreciate it if you could tell me. Thank you! more

Resolved Question: Unidentified Network? Help please.?

Hi, on another PC Atm. On the original PC, I use a belkin wireless router. It was working fine until last night when the net dropped out for some reason. Anyways I unplugged it then plugged it back in then it worked fine. Now today I had the router connected to my PC Physically with a blue network cable and when I went to put it back to the way it originally was (connected wirelessly) I can connect to the router fine, but I can't access the net. It just says "Unidentified Network" - Apparently its an unidentified network, and because of it I cant connect to the net. I can't see how software / updates would be an issue, it worked fine before It dropped out that night and before I was connected to the router via the blue network cable. I use windows Vista. I would appreciate any help, if you need model numbers of the modem / router just ask and I'll have a reply within 5 minutes. more

Resolved Question: "network cable Unplugged" issue?

so ive been reading alot on the internet about this problem but none quite the same as mine. I have just reformatted my asus desktop computer to start fresh. But i am using the same operating system, same drivers and same hardware as before. Windows Vista 32bit home premium. I have reinstalled all drivers but my LAN network says it is operating correctly apart from of course, network cable unplugged. also, the LAN connection light is NOT on. Therefore, the cable is not being recognised. This would suggest faulty hardware only it was functioning just fine only hours before. The cable also works just fine with my laptop so it is not the cables problem. Im thinking it is using the incorrect ports or something? My knowledge is limited on this stuff though. I just think if I bought a new network adapter it would solve nothing. Any ideas would be great. thanksYes, the driver is enabled as well as Local Area Connection. Enabled but unplugged. It is not a wireless connection, I am running a cable from the modem. Thanks all for the fast replies. The driver I installed was off the asus motherboard disk. The device manager shows it as installed under Network Adapter. I have also downloaded and installed the latest driver update by typing the adapter model into search engine. It installed correctly. I have also of course, tried restarting my computer to insure drivers are working. more

Resolved Question: I can't get my internet working!?

I am running Windows 7 currently and i have had the internet working since i installed it but 2 days ago i unlplugged my internet cable and plugged it back in again and now it cannot connect to the internet. It is connected wired from the computer through a Dlink Di-524 wireless router, through a Dlink DSL-502T modem. Another computer on my network is running XP and is connected exactly the same way but is working perfectly. I have tried troubleshooting with windows 7, resetting my router and modem countless times, restarting my computer, unplugging and re-plugging the ethernet cable, unplugging the cable and trying to connect wirelessly which has an even more negative response (the wireless card can pick up the network but cant connect to it for no good reason (even locally)). Trust me, i have tried pretty much every option i can think of and i am fairly computer savvy. Help me please more

Voting Question: How Do I connect xbox 360 to internet with out spending a fortune?

Okay, so I have a Xbox 360 Elite, my DSL modem, and several different lengths of Cat5e cable. I'm pretty sure this is all I need but I'm not 100%. Will I need a crossover cable or a straight-through? I'm thinking I can just unplug the cable from my computer, run it into the 360 and that's it. I'm assuming the cable is the same category of cable (crossover or straight-through, whichever it may be) is the type needed for the modem in the xbox. Am I missing anything or will this work? It's just a temporary set-up until I purchase a D-link DIR-655 gaming router and the wireless adapter for the xbox. Also, is there any other wireless network adapters that will work with the 360 besides the Microsoft brand? more

I right-clicked on the little computer icon and selected the one that said "repair" as has worked in the past. But halfway through the process, it told me that my computer COULDN'T connect to the wireless network. Once I opened all the wireless network options, I selected mine and clicked "connect." After a while, it just closed and returned to the page of wireless network options. I still couldn't connect. What's my problem? How do I fix it? Is a cable unplugged? What's happening? more

Voting Question: Why can't I stay connected to my Verizon WIFI?

I keep getting disconnected from my Verizon wifi for no apparent reason. It will say I'm connected to local and internet, but none of my programs that use the internet will work. I have to go to my network icon, disconnect, right click on the connection, click properties, and re-type in my WEP key to get it to work. And sometimes I have to do this process two or three times before it will finally work. And then a few hours later, or after I reboot I have to go in and re-type the WEP key again! Every few hours I have to reset the damn key! Verizon had me do everything in the book. I reset the router, I unplugged the power cord for a few seconds, I've unplugged the co-ax on both ends and plugged them back in. Verizon reset the whole fios connection from their end, they don't know what to do they tell me it must be something on my computer that's changing my WEP key. What could be changing my WEP key? That makes sense though, because my friends laptop could connect and stay connected fine. My desktop computer works fine through the Ethernet cable so I know it's not the router. What can I do to figure out what's resetting my WEP key, and what can I do to fix it? I have really good virus protection, and I don't download things from sites I don't trust so I don't see how it could be anything malicious. This problem is getting really annoying lol. If none of you know how to fix it could you at least direct me to a forum with people who might know how to help me? more

Resolved Question: WLAN won't detect networks?

I have an HP Pavilion dv2000 running Window 7 Ultimate and recently I went through my windows services in an effort to make my computer run faster. I used speedyvista.com to see with processes I didn't need. It's now a couple of days later and I had unplugged my laptop from it's network cable and needed to use our WiFi but when I turned the WLAN on it said no networks were available. The icon in the tray doesn't change to a WiFi icon but stays as a network cable icon that can't connect. I went back through the processes and set them all back to how they should be an restarted my computer and still no luck. Help please? I was thinking about uninstalling the Broadcom 802.11 Wireless LAN Adapter version 4.170.25.12 and then reinstalling it but I can't find a place where I can reinstall it.The Window Zero Configuration service doesn't exist on my computer. However I did find a service called "WLAN AutoConfig" which I had searched for earlier and not found. Turns out that service needed to be started and it works now :) Thanks for your help! I wouldn't have noticed that if you hadn't told me to look in the services again! more

I have two computers. I have Broadband Cable Internet. Currently, my Computer #1 runs great, has fast internet connection. I'm not using any router. Directly connected from the modem to my computer #1. Right? OK. When I unplugged the ethernet cable and directly connect the modem to my computer #2, I get "Internet Connection Limited or No Activity" warning. Renewing IP, Resetting Network Card didn't help. So I directly connected my laptop to the modem. Same thing, I get "Internet Connection Limited or No Activity" It seems like my internet works only with CPU #1. What's going on? more
