ok... i have an xbox 360 and i want to be able to play private games with a lot of my friends but sadly my xbox 360 is telling me my nat settings are strict. *but* i cant fix this the easy way due to my setup of my xbox to our internet.. alright here is my setup, from the phone jack in the wall. i have a cable connecting to my dsl modem. from there an either net cable going to my router (Both of these i have made sure to have open NAT settings) from there, my router is sending out a wireless signal to my tower in my room which has a wireless networking card. from there is an either net cable going from my comp to my xbox 360. i CAN connect to xbox live. but it is strict nat settings.. for all u who are confused. look at like the first 8 steps on this article and its basicly the same thing i did. (http://www.ehow.com/how_2268792_computers-wireless-internet-connection-xp.html) now... if i connect my xbox directly to my modem and test it. i get open.. if i connect directly to my router. i get open. when i connect to my computer however. i get strict.. so. there is something restricting my connection that is in my computer. i have XP Professional OS. The windows firewall is turned off. the ports in the windows firewall have been changed to allow 80 TCP 88UDP 3074 TCP&UDP and 53 TCP&UDP. as far as i can tell it is happening right when my computer gets the *open* signal from my router and shares it to my xbox. thats where it is becoming strict.. I want to know why and i want to know how to fix it. best easy to understand answer that works gets picked as best answer. i do have AVG free but nothing else. and there arent any 3rd party firewalls on my comp as far as i can tell. thank you. Resolved Question: How can I setup my wireless card without the set up disk?

This is long, but bear with me. I switched my friend's wireless card out and put it into mine. I previously didn't have one and was using the computers wireless network using a usb adapter (stick)... The one I am trying to install in a Linksys wireless-G PCI Adapter Model No. WMP54G... I put into into the slot...both slots even, and my computer doesn't recognize that it's there. the green light doesn't turn on or flash, so obviously the computer doesn't recognize new hardware. The linksys card was already installed when my friend bought it off of craigslist.... So do I need a disk, I feel so helpless. I have no idea what to do. more

I am trying to install a wireless printer on my Mac and Airport . Since the Airport router does not have an auto install I am doing it manually. Voting Question: How do I setup multiple wireless routers and connect them to a CAT5e plug instead of connecting it to a modem?

I am getting to the point where I am going to setup a network in my new house. I plan on having a Qwest dsl modem/router to bring in the internet connection and then connect a 16-port D-link wired switch to allow more computers and devices to connect to the internet. There is about 2 cat5e and 1 cat 6 outlet(s) in each room of the house. I also have setup a place to put a wireless router/switch in the hallway of the main floor and basement. Both locations have a cat 5e cable running to them. My question is how do I connect a wireless router/switch to the CAT5e plug in both hallways so that I don't have to connect the routers to the dsl modem. Basically I want to turn two lines running from the D-link 16-port wired switch and use them in a way to create a wireless network in separate areas of the house. I have seen something similar at some of the local schools. They have a cat 5 outlet in a hallway and they just plug it into their wireless router that sits on the wall and it creates a wireless network. Is there anyway to bridge both wireless routers to share the same password? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for the answer Adrian. I only have a couple of questions concerning the setup that you described on another post. Will it work without having a static ip address. I only have dynamic. Also how will this setup work if the 16 port switch is in between the second router and the dsl modem. more

I currently have a Westell DSL Modem on my computer with a trendnet wireless router on it. Resolved Question: How do I set up a file server at home?

Hello everyone. I'm trying to set up a server at home so that I can access my files from anywhere without paying for online storage. I've found a couple of tutorials out there, but they didn't seem to work for me. I'm fairly tech savvy, but can't seem to figure this out. So, I'm kind of dividing this up into a couple sub questions. Would it be easier to setup apache server from Windows, or to get ubuntu server edition? All I'm trying to do is access files for my own personal use. Here's the details about the relevant parts of my home network: Running the potential server from a cable internet connection. It's behind two routers and a modem. One router is running in client mode to bring net from the wireless router downstairs to the wired devices in my room (including the potential server). Cable internet is from Comcast, as is the router of course. The router which is directly connected to the cable modem is a belkin running stock firmware, the one in my room is a Linksys running DD-WRT firmware. (I don't know if that actually has any effect on it.) So, the question is this: can anyone tell me how to go about setting this up, or point me to an easy to follow tutorial? I've already signed up with DynDNS to overcome the lack of static IP. And I just need to do the rest of it. more

Voting Question: mother's laptop cannot keep/find my internet signal a few feet away but can detect the neighbors 100 ft away?

It's been a few months since I've had this problem. I have a netgear router(white) and a modem(black) one way i have the internet running through both of them is having an Ethernet cable from the pc connect to the router which is connected to another cable to the modem. They both have all green lights and occasionally when my mom's laptop connects to it we both have local and internet access. However I don't know why but even though the laptop is 3 feet away from the router it doesn't pick up the signal but the neighbors consistently show up. I have put a password WPA tkip to protect my connection from my neighbors but I don't know if tht's the problem. Btw the ssid is the same as the one i give to the laptop when trying to connect to it manually and the passphrase is the same one I used when login into the routers website to change the details. Oh since the laptop is a vista it has this connectivity doctor and it tells me the wireless lan is an issue because either the passphrase/ssid aren't the same or im too far away or too many devices are connected to the access point neither of which i suspect is the problem. Oh my lan is also disconnected but when i directly plug one of the cables running thru the devices inot the laptop we both have internet but what's the point of tht if I have to have cables? So,.... someone please tell me how I can restart this connection and step by step setup a consistent connection to my mom's laptop which will appear in the available networks like my neighbors? Oh and still maintain a WPA or WPA2 protection on it. Thank you for you're assistance I know this is a very involved question. more

Resolved Question: How can I set up a Security Enabled, as opposed to Unsecured, Wireless Network?

I have Cable Internet, and I just bought a wireless router so I can play my PS3 and use my laptop at the same time (I have a wireless card for the laptop.) So far, so good. Everything works perfect, and everything if fine and dandy; except for the fact that I'm sure everyone in my condo complex is stealing my internet. The Network setup automatically, so, it is "open" right now. That means anyone who has WiFi can get free internet from me. I am not so thrilled about that. How can I put a password on the network?By the way, I DON'T have the cd of the Router. I bought it refurbished. I'm sure if I need it, I can download any software from the website. However, I'm fairly sure that you can do this through your own computer settings. Also, I have XP. more

Voting Question: I would like to expand the range of the wireless network of my office, what steps should I take?

Hi, Management at my office asked me to expand the range of their wireless network, what steps should I take to do this? They need internet and connection to the 2 existing servers. Our network setup is the following: modem -> wireless router, this wireless router is also connected to a network router and 1 server (redhat linux) the network router is connected to 10 desktop PC's and another server (redhat linux) I would also like to upgrade our network from wireless B/G speeds to N speed. I would like to get decent connection speed throughout the entire office; 45 meters in length, 2 floors, 5 walls (old building). I would hate to cable the entire building. - So should I just buy 2 new Wireless N Routers? - Do I need another router or a switch? I've got a new switch I just bought accidentally. - What type of cables would I pull - straight(normal) or crossed UTP? - Which machines, routers would I have to configure? How do I configure them? So, as you can see, I'm very lost. :D :( All help will be greatly appreciated! John more

Resolved Question: How do I Tell my pc which network card to use for the internet?

Hi, I have a pc with two network cards, one onboard and the other one a PCI network card. The onboard card I use to connect to our local neighborhood wireless network group (not internet). The PCI network card is connected to my Dovado wireless 3G router which I use for the internet (PC,Laptop and iPhone) The issue is that when both is connected only the neighborhood network works, if I disconnect the neighborhood network then with my wireless router(internet) i can brouse the internet. It seems that when both is connected the pc tries to use the onboard card for the internet and not the PCI card. So my question is how do I setup my pc that it knows which one is for internet usage? My neighborhood card is set-up with a fixed IP and my router(internet) is set-up as DHCP. more

Resolved Question: How can I use the CAT5 outlets in my home?

My family and I live in a new home that is wired for CAT5 throughout. Each bedroom has a jack with 2 coaxial outputs and 2 ethernet outlets. The living room has this as well. However, when I simply plug in an ethernet cable from the wall in my bedroom to my computer, it detects nothing. Our current network setup (through Comcast) is as follows: In the living room, out of one of those aforementioned jacks, comes 1 ethernet cable and 2 coaxial cables (one goes to the modem, the other to our DVR, and the ethernet also goes from the modem for phone). Out of the modem comes a connection to our Linksys router, which then emits wireless signal (painfully slow) throughout the house. The router has 4 outlets in the back, in addition to the internet-in port. After getting no signal from the first attempt I mentioned, I then hooked up an ethernet cable from one of the ports on the back of the router to the remaining empty ethernet port on the wall. When I came back to my room, still nothing. I've read around some sites that mention finding a "hub" of some sort? I can't seem to find this anywhere in the house. What am I missing here? Any help would be awesome, thanks! more

But the only option available is Remove: Remove all installed components , so I don't want to click next and it removes my wireless network and uninstalls my modem/router. As I said 2 of my recently bought games are doing the exact same thing so am unsure of how to get round this so I can get the games installed and start playing them. Thanks in advance more

Resolved Question: Home Networking Questions?

I have a wireless Router connected to a modem that I use to connect to the internet. After moving to a new home, I have a realized that the wireless network is too far away form my other computers in the house, and I need to run ethernet wires to them. I am not exactly sure what the optimal setup would be. I am trying to achieve the highest internet speeds possible. My computer has the LAN Chipset Marvell 88E8056 and a Max LAN Speed of 10/100/1000Mbps. My best guess is to run a Category 5 e Patch cable from my router to the computer. The one I would buy is probably this one : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812601093. Is this my best option, or is there something better for around the same price? Also, that wire is supposed rated at 550 mhz. What does this mean, and is it correct? I thought only cat6 ethernet wires went that high. (Would buying a separate NIC be beneficial? I use my computer for gaming) Comcast is my ISP. How would I determine what my internet connection upload/download speeds are rated? (I have been told buying my own modem would be beneficial, as the Touchstone Telephony Modem [Arris Model TM602G/CT] limits my local internet Connection to 10 mbps. Is this true, even if my Upload/Download speeds are rated higher? If I bought my own, is it easy to setup, and would I notice a difference in internet speeds?) Thanks for all the help, NNJZ more

Voting Question: How to connect multiple TVs to cable and be able to record shows?

If I have multiple TVs that I want to connect to my cable, but do not want to run any coax, the best thing I can think of is to connect them via wireless or ethernet cables. Products like slingbox and Sony's LocationFree have a lot of additional functionality and are a bit costly for my limited use case. I only care about viewing TV while at home and would (ideally) use my home network to stream content between TVs and whatever recording device. Can anyone suggest a setup or a product to use for this? I know slingbox is doable, but it requires 4 items (slingbox, 2 x slinglink, slingcatcher) which adds up. Any thoughts? Thanks! Thanks! more

Laptop 1 does nothing. When I run the wizard again, I get the option of adding more computers to the netword I created. Resolved Question: Wireless N Network not reaching 300Mbps?

I have recently upgraded my 802.11g 54mbps Router to a Netgear WNR3500 802.11n 300mbps router. My setup is as follows: Gaming PC + Media Centre PC + Playstation 3 are connected wired at 1.0Gbps via built-in gigabit switch I have 2 laptops connected wireless, one runs at 54Mbps(it has built in 802.11g) and another which runs at 144Mbps(it has 802.11n built in), why is the latter only working at 144Mbps even thought the router is set to 300Mbps and both are N Draft 2.0 compatible? I've tried the laptop next to the router and the far side of the house and signal strength remains 5/5 bar and 144Mbps? I've heard I need to enable something called Channel Bonding to enable the laptop to connect at full speed, but this may stop the slower 802.11g laptop connecting? How do i get it to work at 300mbps? Do I need to enable this channel bonding and would that prevent the other laptop connecting reliably? Thanks more

Voting Question: How can I share a printer between a XP desktop and a windows 7 laptop?

I just got a new laptop with windows 7 and I am trying to get it to share the printer that is on my XP desktop. I have tried many solutions I have found online but none have worked so far. So I think perhaps I am missing something simple. Both computers are connected to the internet via the same modem, the XP desktop is connected via wire and the laptop via wireless internet. I was able to transfer songs from my main XP desktop to the laptop via iTunes, so i know they are communicating, However when i check the network on the win7 machine the XP one does not appear, and when i check the network on the XP machine the win7 laptop does not appear. Some of the things I have tried: *Use XP's network setup wizard. *Make sure both computers have the same work group name. *Disable firewalls. *Make sure the printer (which is on the XP machine) has sharing enabled. My issue seems to mainly be that both computers don't see each other. Once they see each other perhaps actually sharing the printer wont be that hard. Additional details: *The desktop has XP with service pack 3. *My modem is a Thomson 585v7. more

Resolved Question: How can I set up a wireless internet connection?

I have a Gigaset SE567 router/modem that's supposed to run a wireless connection. I have my PC hooked up to it through an ethernet cable, and it works fine, but I'm also trying to hook up my laptop, which runs on Vista, to the internet through the same router/modem. How do I do it? It worked fine a long time ago, then it stopped working for some reason. I have tried setting up a wireless network using my PC. It tells me I have to either put the setup information on a USB stick and plug it into my wireless access point, and then my laptop, or enter the codes manually. The laptop I understand, but how can I plug it into my router/modem, it has no USB port! I also do not understand how to enter the codes manually, because I have no way of entering information into my router/modem! I am very confused. The laptop does not show the network I set up, but it shows other networks, and it works with other networks fine. All I did was I followed the instructions to make a wireless network, but I skipped the step to shove the USB into the wireless access point, as that is impossible. Wtf am I supposed to do? more
