Open Question: Network Monitoring tool for all vendors?

We are a network management company mostly in data. We are getting clients on IP telephony (corporate voip) networks as well now. What are the best softwares/tools to monitor IPT/voip networks for all the vendors i.e. cisco, nortel, avaya etc. We want to put a software/server centrally and monitor all our different clients voip networks from that. So I recently reformatted an Inspiron 9300 laptop, And now I can't connect to the internet (wireless).. In my network connections, there isn't an wireless connection icon. In computer management, under Network Adapter, there's 1394 Net adapter and Broadcom 440x10\100 intergrated controller. Plus, under other devices, Network Controller (!), I cannot install the hardware because it can't find any. I do not have any of my installation cds.. Anyone have a clue what to do?That's not the problem, I can't seem to find the right driver that's missing? :S.. And there also a driver that's a cab file.. not sure how to test that one out.. noob here. ;) more

Resolved Question: Do I need to keep all these Microsoft .Net Framework Programs?

I am trying to do as much housecleaning as possible on my pc and remove as many unwanted programs as possible by going into control panel then remove programs...I was getting a lot done but then I got down into the "M's" and there are about 25 different entries or places one after another of programs titled "Microsoft .Net Framework" then there are sub headings that can be removed that are titled things like "winforms", "Dr. Watson", and many other names that mean nothing to me. What are these programs? There are 3 service packs and each one includes several sub programs under the heading of the different service packs...this is where that "Dr. Watson" one is located. I have tried to understand this question using google but it reads like greek to me. I cannot find a computer layman's terms answer for what are these for and can I remove any or most of them? I ESPECIALLY would like to know about this strange name of Microsoft .Net framework service pack program called "Dr. Watson"...what does it do...what is it for? in layman's terms please.....what will happen if I remove it? Informatics is a subject that focuses mainly on preparing its students for higher education, these educations all lay in the same field of interest, which is basically working with computers and everything linked to it. Our main courses are all based around working with a computer and learning how it works. We have a practical course called TISY in which we learn how a computer and networks are assembled. Next to that we have a course based around programming on a computer, this is called TIPR. And finally we have a course which teaches us how to work with all the common software; this varies from software such as Microsoft Word to programming web applications. Now I shall explain these courses a little further, especially our main two courses from this package, which are TIPR and TISY. TIPR focuses around the use of Visual Basic Developer, which allows users to create a user interface for their own program and link code to it. In my opinion this is a very hard course, because you need to have a lot of insight to be able to create your programs the best possible. Also you have to test out these programs which itself is also hard, cause you never know what another user might input; if he inputs something wrong and the program crashes it will put you in a bad light. So you have to anticipate all of these flaws in your program and direct the user for the most effective way to work with your program. Our second main course is TISY, also referred to as System Management. Here we learn to understand how each of the individual parts of a computer work and how those parts are put together to the computer we can see. Please help me out! The management of the neighborhood I live in provides students free internet, but lately its been pissing people off as the local internet wouldn't get connected. That's what happened this morning, so I had to connect to an unsecured wireless linksys network my computer found. it's about five times faster than what the management provides, but I was wondering if this is legal for me to connect to the linksys router, considering that I didn't install it. My girlfriend's Toshiba laptop has WIndows Vista Home Premium. She turned it on yesterday and a driver install thing randomly popped up. She didn't know what it was and neither did I so she hit NO when it said to install. After that she was no longer able to connect to the internet. When you hover over the wireless icon it says "Connection status: unknown The Dependency service or group failed to start. I have tried numerous fixes and none have worked. Under the NETWORK ADAPTERS in the device manager all have the triangle/exclamation mark. When I right click and hit properties it says "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device (Code 31). When I go to Computer Management and Services I right click DCHP client and it says "Windows could not start the DHCP Client service on Local Computer" Error 1079 the account specified for this service is different form the account specified for the other services running in the same process. When I try to start Network Location Awareness. It says Windows could not sart the Network Location Awareness on Local Computer. Specific error code 1073741288. I've tried the "netsh winsock reset catalog" fix in command prompt run as administrator and reset. This still did not fix the problem. I thought it might be a firewall problem however when I try to change any firewall settings it says that Windows Cannot Start Firewall Service. She is the administrator on the laptop. We don't have the disk the laptop came with and might not for a week or so. Does ANYONE know how to fix this? Thanks in advance for trying. more

Hi, I'm looking for a software that can help improve the process of organizing my High School newspaper. Keep in mind this is a fairly large paper that comes about once a month. I would like for all of the writers, photographers, layout staff, and editors have "accounts". The writers and the photographers will be able to "submit" their work and it will go into some sort of hierarchy waiting for the next step, which would be edits from the editors. Then, when we go to layout all of the items needed for a page are in that page folder, somewhere in the hierarchy. Also, I would like to be able to store the "database" on a server/computer and have other computers on the network access the database. This is a situation if I should choose to take a pay cut, which would be one dollar less plus I would not be able to get commission anymore. I have just graduated with my BA in technical management with a concentration in computer networking and management last June, so I have yet not had any real job experience in my field. I got a Compaq Presario V2000 for 60 bucks, fixed it up, and it works great, but i had to install the broadcom wireless driver for the wireless card to work at all. I absolutely hate broadcom management software, and i can't seem to find an option in the program itself to change to Windows default. HI all:) I am an IT Specialist and whose areas of interests are normally Helpdesk and Information Management. I am now beginning to study networking and network security more in depth. I am trying to use the SuperScan 4.0 client to discover the hosts on my network but I am having difficulties. I currently have 3 systems powered on, 2 laptops and a desktop. Of course my home network is a class C so I define a range of 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.254 as the range of IP addresses to scan for live hosts. The results I keep getting are the same....one discovered host...the machine from which I am initiating the scan. I am not using segmenting on the router and I cannot figure out why it is not finding the other systems. All 3 boxes are Win 7 boxes. Can anyone give me any advice as to why this is? Thanks! more

Ok I know that in this day and age, I mustn't be naiive, and people say pretty much ANYTHING that you do on your work computer can be somehow tracked/monitored/recovered etc. etc. etc. However, after working at various financial and very "corporate"-ish companies over the years, I have indeed noticed that some companies (and some of their divisions within), do more or less, so it's not all the same risk, if you have at least some idea of how much monitoring, tracking they do in your area. Positions are different too. Less tracking might be done (or at least only once a year or so) on teh machine of management than team members. Whatever. anyway, my other thing is, yes anything is "possible", but often not feasible. example, a company may not choose to spend a certain amount of time checking into one employee, unless/until there is some reason so. so here is my situation: laptop computer, that's pretty well locked down. (I am not an admin). windows PC. XP professional. I.E. browser, I.E. 7 i believe. When my laptop is at home with me, AND I AM NOT CONNECTED TO THE COMPANY NETWORK / VPN, and if during that time, I put a CD into the CD drive. the CD has pictures on it. Maybe a .avi or .wmv file or two. I view or play those items, using only windows picture and fax viewer, and also using maybe WMP. at this time, I also am not even connected to the internet. I do nothing with the files (don't copy or move them off of the cd drive), just view them, then pop the CD back out and that's it. Of course, later on (maybe the same day, maybe in a few days), I finally do connect to the corporate network. realistically how likely is it, how possible, how hard would it be (or is it even possible), for some person or program to actually notice the fact that my harddrive, at one time in the past, played a file that was only available to the harddrive while on the CD. guess what i'm saying is, it must make a huge difference that the data was never stored on the harddrive of the computer....right? can the harddrive and memory and what's recoverable from that standpoint, really have much effect on something that was accessed from a removable drive? more

Resolved Question: What is the best career path for me? Industrial Technology or MIS?

I've been thinking alot lately about my major and it is now that stage that I really need to dig deep down and decide. There are two majors in mind for me: Industrial Technology (concrentation in Computer Technology and Networking Technology) and MIS (Management Information Systems). What is the difference between those two? I'm leaning toward Industrial and I really want to work with computers but I'm just worried about the job outlook on it. What careers can you get for both? more

Voting Question: Help finding an IT job with a college degree?

I graduated two years ago with major in IT and minor in Management Information Systems. It seems very difficult finding a job with no direct work experience, since I haven't. I am interested in the fields of networking and databases. Currently I am about take my Network+ exam, then hopefully Cisco (CCNA) after that. I would really like to find a job soon but I figured if I can't, I might as well advance my knowledge and credentials while I am waiting.... Does anyone have any recommendations on finding an entry level job?? Do you think certs will help me??? Any others that you recommend?? more

Voting Question: I would like to expand the range of the wireless network of my office, what steps should I take?

Hi, Management at my office asked me to expand the range of their wireless network, what steps should I take to do this? They need internet and connection to the 2 existing servers. Our network setup is the following: modem -> wireless router, this wireless router is also connected to a network router and 1 server (redhat linux) the network router is connected to 10 desktop PC's and another server (redhat linux) I would also like to upgrade our network from wireless B/G speeds to N speed. I would like to get decent connection speed throughout the entire office; 45 meters in length, 2 floors, 5 walls (old building). I would hate to cable the entire building. - So should I just buy 2 new Wireless N Routers? - Do I need another router or a switch? I've got a new switch I just bought accidentally. - What type of cables would I pull - straight(normal) or crossed UTP? - Which machines, routers would I have to configure? How do I configure them?
