Open Question: Two problems with my Dell Inspiron 1521 laptop?

Just today, my computer was going VERY slow and had only about 30 GB of memory left. So, I decided to completely wipe my hard drive. I re-installed VISTA and now I have 136 GBs again...yay...but two problems happened after. 1: My Wi-fi no longer works. It "can't find networks". I'm using a local connection right now. 2: My resolution is a LOT worse than it was before; yes it is turned up all the way and I am not in safe mode or anything. Anyone got some tips or something? more

Open Question: Can someone tell me what's happened to our educational system?!?

I have noticed on many social networks when someone is asking the question about this topic vs that topic people say "Witch is better..this or that". Since when is witch used instead of which? Not only is it totally annoying, it makes me think these young adults and children have no idea how to speak and write within the English language. If I hand out baseball bats, can we smack some intelligence into these people? Here are some examples just here on Y!A: 1. ..Intel core2 duo @ 2.20 GHz 2.20 GHz 1GB and witch grapihc is card is better 2. ..XD so for all u randoners out there witch is best? 3. ...on some cameras from Samsung. - So witch in your opinion is better Kodak... 4. ...0.0623 etc imag part -0.0205 -0.167 -0.12 witch of these three do i plot on the circle... 5. ...etc imag part -0.0205 -0.167 -0.12 witch of these three do i plot on the circle... Ok there's too many more to list. But you can run an Answers search for witch and you'll be amazed at the use of this instead of which. more

Open Question: Why can't liberals admit they watch Fox News?

Fox ratings are so high it is obvious not all viewers are right wing extremists. Judging by comments on Y/A, liberals watch Fox too. Open Question: Should I start watching TV? -Read The Details Please-?

I stopped watching TV about a year and a half ago. Not because I thought it was bad, but because I started going on the internet a lot more. Which I think is pretty worse. Anyway, I need to stop going on the internet. I go on it way too much. I don't go to any social networking sites, but I spend most of my time watching anime, reading manga, researching for my own satisfaction, and here on Yahoo Answers. I also realized that I miss out on a lot of information when I don't watch TV. For this year and a half, I have almost been shut out from the world, information wise. I also read that watching it (in moderation) has it's benefits, although I won't list them. If you think that I should start watching TV, can you give me some good shows to follow so I won't be lost while searching through the channels? I'll let you know about my personality, just so you know what I'm like, before recommending something I'll be bored of. I liked to learn. But don't recommend Discovery Channel, because I already have that on my list. I like to think. I also like things that make me think. So complex shows would be good, but nothing too heavy with mystery or tragedy. I really like comedy too. The witty type though, not south park. I'm already planning on watching Comedy Central though. I'm not going to watch disney channel, well.... because I won't. But I'll probably watch Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon occasionally. BTW, I'm 13, and female. Just in case. But just because I told you my age, hopefully you won't hold back, even if the show is a bit adult-ish. When I say adult-ish, I mean nudity (do they even show that on TV?), murder, or shows that seem so complex that you doubt I would understand it. My parents aren't strict, and they trust me. And I trust myself. I'm not... completely immature. I just wanted to let you know. If you need to know, I have Cablevision. I hope you can help me! more

Open Question: Since going to Win 7 64 bit and IE 8 I've been getting internet problems.?

Have a Dell XPS 410 duel core 4 gig ram. Bought it who a friend a few months ago. Was running on Visa 32 bit. He gave me the Win 7 upgrade disk with the pc. The upgrade to Win 7 64 bit was a piece of cake and no problems at all. On auto upgrade the system loaded IE 8. Have both IE8 64 and 32 bit installed. Over all the system is great except on some web sites Parade games for example will run fine for awhile then just disconnect. No internet service, but will then connect back to my home page. I share the internet service with my wife on our home network thru a Linksys dsl switch and actiontec dsl modem. Her pc is a HP duel core, 6 gig RAM, same software as mine but no problems with disconnects. Any thoughts out there? Should I bump the RAM on mine to 6 or 8 gig? My system was running XP when new. I understand XP was limited to 4 gig, but I was told by Dell that now that I am on Win 7 I can go beyond 4 gig. more

Open Question: Why can't I connect to almost ANY applications or their update servers?

I have a brand new laptop running on Windows 7. My ISP is Comcast and ever since I purchased this PC, I have been unable to connect to almost any program or update server, although I can surf the web just fine. For instance, I cannot connect to Windows Updates, any other Windows servers such as the download server for Visual Studio, 90% of all video games I've tried, etc. I ran a port scan on my computer and almost all the ports are blocked. I have tried turning Windows firewall off but that changes nothing. I contacted Comcast and they told me that they do not support Windows 7 and that this may be why I can't connect. This makes some sense due to the fact that these programs will connect fine when I take my laptop to school and use it on their network; however, I know others running Windows 7 on Comcast without these issues. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, I have tested the connections without the router, so that is definitely not the issue, and the other computers in the house (on XP and Vista) connect to these servers just fine.I have already uninstalled all antivirus software and have ruled that out. This has nothing to do with my browsers because I am trying to connect to programs, not web sites. more

Open Question: Recovering files after a virus attack...?

I'm not to familiar with the ins and outs of computers. I know how to use one for what I need it for, and I learn other things along the way...Unfortunately, my parent's computer was attack by a virus when I was visiting a website and temporarily allowed pop-ups. I was unable to click anything or move anything, so I did the only (not exactly bright) thing I could think to do and powered off the computer using the power button. They have only the virus protection that automatically comes with the Windows Vista operating system. I then tried to turn the computer back on, after choosing which operating system to open with, and whether I should use Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Last Good Known Configuration, or Start Windows Normally. I was able to get it on using last Good Known Configuration, and when I got back on, things were still moving pretty slowly. And I kept on hearing audio of what sounded like an ad, when I had nothing open. Screens I was not aware I had opened opened. I tried installing an anti-virus software, but I had to leave for work and I guess it didn't work and my Grandpa had ended up turning off the computer. This morning, my parents must have tried turning ont he computer and it wouldn't work, and they selected Safe Mode, which apparently means it takes it back to some time in the computer's history that I don't remember because there are files I thought I had gotten rid of and other important files are now missing. So I tried installing the software again. It made it necessary to restart, so I restarted using Safe Mode again. I currently have a sweep running on both of our computers. I am very concerned because there were sensitive turbo tax files on the computer. I am wondering if the person is able to somehow get ahold of those files now that the computer has been infected. Is there any way to recover these files? The sweep has already picked up some "Mal/Generic" which I guess must mean some generic malware or something? What should I do now? more
