Outdoor Network Questions asked

Resolved Question: How come I can't get Fox Network on DTV?

Hello, my LCD HDTV can't pick up the Fox network. My other tv's can't pick up the network either. What is going on? I only have an indoor antenna maybe an outdoor uhf/vhf antenna will work? It's driving me nuts that I can't watch the simpsons or some of the nfl games. Any one else experiencing the same problem with the fox network? I'm from Southern California. Any help or insight would be thankful. more

Resolved Question: High School Hangout: Need Ideas!?

I am working on a business plan, and need ideas to attract high-schoolers to my business. The core business is a Gelato (Ice Cream) Store, and my target consumer in the evenings is high school students. I am planning to have an outdoor area for projecting movies, and an indoor area for networking and socializing. As my daughter is only 7 months old, my recent interaction with teenagers is limited to say the least. Any help is appreciated. Thanks! more

Voting Question: Any comments on wifi antennas?

I recently moved to a rural area and didn't realize how limited my internet options would be. The choices are dial up ( forget it), satellite and this antenna service ( roadstar ). Both have received poor reviews, are expensive, slow, unreliable, expensive to install and require long commitments. After years of cable, these options all seen disappointing. I recently purchased a 15DBI panel antenna and it works surprisingly well. Only thing is, most people lock their networks, but I've been able to pick up one unsecured with 3-4 bars. Now I'm thinking of buying one of those large outdoor ones. Any thoughts? more

Voting Question: What is the best way I can share my internet connection with my friend that lives 400ft. behind me.?

A friend of mine just bought a house about 400ft. behind mine and I want to share my internet connection with him. I have wireless "N" but the signal isnt strong enough to reach. He will only be using a stationary desktop computer. There is a clear line of sight between the back of my house and the back of his house. I posted a link below of a outdoor network bridge i found online, but cannot find any reviews. Can someone tell me if this would be a good way to go or is there a better solution? http://www.wirelessnetworkproducts.com/hd261723-mileoutdoorwireless24ghzwirelessbridgebundlethisisacompletewirelessbridgetworadioswithinstallconfigurationinstructi.aspx more

Resolved Question: point to point wireless networking?

Hi, i am pretty new to DIY point to point wireless links and have a few questions regarding what equipment is best suited to my situation. I am trying to connect one buliding to another building about 70 feet away with a wireless connection, there is a direct line of sight and the computer in the opposite building is behind a door and then a wall. Not too sure if I should get a 2.4ghz outdoor panel antennae on either building connected on both ends to an access point OR if I should should get a high power outdoor multi-client bridge and my computer in the other buliding could pick up the signal? Any input would be much appreciated, thanks. more

Resolved Question: What will happen to NBC now that it has been bought by COMCAST?

COMCAST, the cable company and operator of E! Entertainment Television, Style Network, G4, The Golf Channel and Versus (formerly the Outdoor Life Network) has just bought NBC. As most people know, NBC has moved Jay Leno to 10PM, accepting the smaller audience in exchange for the relatively low production costs of a talk show vs. dramatic scripted shows. Between 8PM and 10PM they are now running 7 hours of scripted television per week, but only 2 hours have decent ratings (one dramatic show: Law & Order; Special Victims Unit) and (one hour of comedy: 30 Rock and The Office). What do you think will happen? Will NBC turn into pure reality TV, talk shows, sports and news shows? The current scripted dramas like Trauma, Mercy, Heroes, and the original Law & Order are failing. Do you think that they will fade out dramatic TV entirely and just replace it with comedy? more

Resolved Question: Future Winter Classics?

the other day on the nhl network they showed an old preseason game of the ny rangers and la kings, it was outside in a parking lot of a las vegas hotel. it was amazing to me how well the ice held up, infact the ice was better then the first winter classic in buffalo where the ice was needing maintence almost every minute. do you think the winter classic years down the road will ever evolve to going to warm weather climates for the game? obviously we all love to see the outdoor games with the snow and everybody bundled up and the hockey feeling in the air, but maybe after 10 years or so it would be neat to see a game in a warm weather climate every once in a while. it would also do wonders for premoting the game. more

Resolved Question: Configuring Access Point on a Public (NAT) Network from a Private (NAT)?

I have a DSA3100 gateway with seperate public/private. On the public side there is a outdoor access-point (DWL-2700) that works fine but I am unable to reach its web configuration I suspected this was due to the firewall rules but I disabled the firewall, and still it wont work. Even if I try to reach the APs web-interface from the public side it dont respond (which is good) because I dont want public clients to have access to web-configuration but if its not the firewall whats blocking it? I have one admin client (LAN) machine that is on the private network that I use for all admin functions. I am able to configure the gateway no problem but I cannot reach the devices (IP's) on public switch. Each port (Public/AUTH and Private/LOCAL) has its own switch. The access points are plugged into the the public switch, with a single LAN client on private. The gateway has DHCP enabled on both public and private, and both are set to NAT. The Access point has a default IP of 192.168.0.50 The Private device address is: 192.168.0.40 The Public device address is: 192.168.1.40 The ONLY way I am able to reach the web-configuration for the access point is plug it into the private switch then I can reach it (192.168.0.50) no problem. Anyways how can I reach the AP's web-interface while its on public network from the private network and keep public users from accessing it? more

Resolved Question: How do I attach an outdoor antenna to my Dish Network Receiver?

I have Dish Network with HD. I am trying to mount an outdoor antenna to the roof, and attach the antenna to the Dish Network Receiver. Will I be able to attach both the antenna and the satellite dish to a splitter, and run one wire into the receiver, or will I need to run a separate wire from the antenna to the receiver. Secondly, if I'm not able to combine the two into one wire, how do I run the wire from the antenna through the house out the wall? I've never done this before. Please be specific in your answers. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: How to connect router to computer?

Resolved Question: When I go out I play in the street I get hit by cars I make mashed potatoes I get hit by cars?

To the grammar police and spelling Nazis I apologize now for any mistakes in the fallowing questions 1. At the beginning of a shoot out the coach has to summit on paper the first 3 shooters. Why is that? How come he doesn’t have to summit more than 3 when it goes into extra shooters? 2. I was watching a game recently I don’t remember which one but that doesn’t matter right now. One of the teams was down by a goal with less than a minute to go and the coach called a time out and went over the goalie out game plan. And I notced there was a fan sitting behind the bench and he was leaning in trying to listen to what the coach was saying. Which got me thinking with technoligy the way it is today what is stoping teams for buying tickets behind there opponents bench and getting someone to sit there listen in and relay anything relavent back to the other team? 3. I havent asked a stat question in a while so it’s time to ask one now. I heard this while flipping through the 10 games on the nhl network last night I love free previews. Who was the last player to score 5 goals in a game? Hint he played last night 4. If the AHL were to hold an outdoor game like the winter classic would anybody care? For instance if the Marlies and Bulldogs had a game at BMO field could it actully sell out the 20 000 or so seats? or actully get tv coverage? 5. Speaking of AHL tv coverage I can’t speak for all the teams but how come the Marlies cant get on tv but almost every OHL game is broadcasted at least on the rogers channel? 6. Its coming closer and closer to the day where there will be coorperate logos on professional sports teams jerseys in North America. Which NHL team will cross to the dark side first? 7. The first time I posted this question it didn't go through has that happen to anybody else? BQ: what’s for lunch today or what did you have for lunch today? I think I will be getting a panzerotti today more

Resolved Question: Wireless Networking in a Motel.?

Ok, I own and operate a computer repair/tech service company. I was contracted by a motel to fix and improve their wireless network to reach to all their rooms and second building. When I first arrived there, they were using a single Linksys router that more or less covered their primary building until it broke. I happened to have a Hawking HWRN1A Router in-stock that I replaced it with. When I first hooked up the Hawking unit. It had overall better range and throughput than the Linksys did. After a small amount of time, its range and actual usable range decreased dramatically. Now, the router will barely put a signal out that reaches to the end of the primary building where as before I was able to reach the secondary building with it and still be connected at ~25% signal. It's usable range is now even less than it was before, it only puts out a signal thats usable in the office where the router is located and the 6 rooms above and to the sides around the office. I then went ahead a purchased a Signal Booster made by Hawking Technology the "HSB2" which was supposed to strengthen the actual signal put out by the router. It did absolutely nothing. In fact it seemed to decrease my range and signal strength. After doing some more research into the matter. I went ahead and got Hawking's HAO9SIP +9 db Omni-Directional outdoor antenna, which is supposed to have a range of ~1.5 miles. After hooking this up, I noticed a nice increase in coverage area, but I still have the same problem of it the signal not being usable. What I mean by that, is after you get a few rooms away from the office and AP. You can still see the router, but not connect, nor use the internet on it. Like during my testing I walked around the entire property while streaming video off of the internet to know exactly when it dropped off. I didn't go very far before the video stopped and I could no longer load any websites. Yet, I was still sending and reciving packets from the network itself and was still able to see the other computers connected to it. What can I do to fix this? more

Resolved Question: Will this HDTV antenna work for me?

I recently bought a UHF HDTV antenna from Amazon, and while it works great for the UHF channels, it does not pick up some stations in my area. I basically only care about the four major networks - FOX, NBC, CBS and ABC. But I can now only get CBS and ABC. I looked up my location on AntennaWeb and these were my results: http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/1002/antennas.jpg And here are the explanations of the colors if you are not familiar: http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/antenna.aspx?color=Blue So I understand that I need a UHF-VHF combination antenna to get FOX and NBC as well as CBS and ABC. But the NBC one says "large multidirectional" UHF. I'm not sure what constitutes a "large multidirectional" UHF antenna...the one I have now is pretty large? Anyway, here are the antennas I am considering: http://www.amazon.com/Terk-Amplified-High-Definition-Antenna-Reception/dp/B0007MXZB2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1253634574&sr=1-1 http://www.amazon.com/Channel-Master-3010-Outdoor-Rooftop/dp/B0009FJEUS/ref=sr_1_23?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1253634574&sr=1-23 The second one has a beamwidth of 45 degrees which should be good. I can mount it on top of my garage too. What do you think, will either of these work for me??? more

Resolved Question: How far can you get wifi to go outdoors with out spending alot of money?

I want to know if I can get wifi to go approximately .5mi with out spending alot of money. I have a TRENDnet wireless router with 3 antennas. I don't remember what model it is, but I bought it about a year ago and at the time it had the fastest speed at the greatest distance with N band. I know the antennas on the router do not come off. My mother has been using the router because I didn't need it and I am debating whether I should ask for it back or buy a new router. I am currently using an all in one modem/router from verizon, but will be switching to comcast because my girlfriend is an employee and gets the internet for free. I know I get better signal outback in my garage with the verizon equipment than I got with the TRENDnet router, but the signal was still usable. I have a Dell inspiron 1525 with an internal n band network card. My yard is 100'x150' with the house located in the front right corner and the garage in the back left corner. I definitely want good strong signal everywhere on my property. There is a park 2 blocks from my house. When I map out the route to the bar on the other side of the park it shows about .75mi so I guess in a straight line the park would not be any more than .5mi. I have been researching some things online and keep coming across outdoor wireless AP which I don't really understand and most are a/b/g bands. I found a review for one that said it was 400mW and it said it could reach more than a few thousand feet but I couldn't find that model for sale to get a price reference. Most of the ones I find online are 600mW and they are some sort of box that mounts outside and you have to buy antennas for it and I am not sure how it gets it's power or signal. I think it gets everything from an ethernet cable? I want to know what should I use to accomplish what I want, and is there a simple device that already has the antennas that I can just hook up on my roof with a hardwired ethernet cable from my router into the box I buy for my roof. What will I need, and about how much will it cost? Should I just buy a new router that will get around my property better? It would be cool to compute in the park down by the river, but it may be out of my price range. more

Resolved Question: Outdoor wifi over 20 acres?

I am trying to design a wifi network that is as cheap as possible while remaining reliable and easy to install. I am looking for opinions on equipment and tutorials on the entire process or methods. My budget is 1500 for materials. The area is light forest and open ground. It is a light industrial "complex" with a few trailer offices and trees. No major buildings or obstacles and there is more or less a line of sight for most of the area. That is pretty much what I have come up with unfortunately. Is there any way to do it while limiting the upgrading on the end user side? I want laptops and PDAs and such to connect from all over the property. more

Resolved Question: Outdoor long range (0.5KM) wireless networking?

I need to setup a long range (0.5KM) wireless network to cover the gardens of my property and to reach to some of the out buildings. I already have a router setup with my internet connection, and need a long range outdoor wireless antenna which can connect to an ethernet port and broadcast the internet outside. I am yet to find a suitable antenna, insight would be usefull.. Also i have seen on the internet RJ-45 to Coaxial adapters, all of the wifi antenna which i have seen have a Coaxial adapter, so im assuming that i can just hook the antenna to the adapter and it would work? or have i got this all wrong. Please help. more

Resolved Question: Setting up my outdoor wifi. HELP?

I am setting up an internet connection. My mom and her sister want to share the same internet connection (to save money of course) but their houses are a little less than quarter-mile away. Now i've been researching a while and I'm still a little bit confused. This is what I get out of it all: I'm going to set up the Satellite internet at my aunts house. Her supplied company router should have the 2 tv rf jacks in the back so I would buy a panel-type antenna such as this: http://cableorganizer.com/outlet/EFL-2020155.html?section=6&catname=LAN+Connectivity+%5D+Active+Network+Products&src=froogle&CAWELAID=282389081 and attach it to the back of the router, and secure the antenna to the roof and aim it at my moms house. NOW, at my moms house, I would get the same panel-type antenna and aim it at my aunts antenna. At the end of my moms antenna I would attach it to the back of my moms computer through a wireless card such as this: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3528055&SRCCODE=GOOGLEBASE&cm_mmc_o=VRqCjC7BBTkwCjCECjCE. Would this all work? Would both houses have an internet connection? Or, am I missing something? I was also curious. I have a laptop with an internal antenna that picks up wifi. Would it pick up the signal that my aunts antenna is sending out, if I was in the house, less than 20 feet away from the antenna? And the same thing for my moms house. Would my laptop pick up the signal from my moms antenna if I was in the house? Or would that not even work with the directional panel-type antennas becuase the antenna wouldn't be pointed in the direction of my laptop. Thanks in advance. Happy Fathers day. more

Resolved Question: I'm looking to change careers, need to make at least 40-50k to start. What are my options?

I have a large variety of experience that could be applied to many different careers, I'm looking for what would be the easiest transition (minimal amount of career training) based on the skills that I have. First off I have over 8 years in customer service/hospitality mostly as a bartender with some supervisory experience. So that could transfer over into managerial positions, CSR, or anything dealing with money and customers. I also have on and off a few years in IT, mostly completing contracts doing some help desk work, server building, field tech, QA, a/v, and networking. I don't have any certifications but may be getting A+, and a few microsoft (I can pass the tests just a matter if I want to spend the money). That is the path I am going down now but with the economy it has been dificult to find a job in IT in this area that will pay me what I am worth. I have knowledge/work experience in auto mechanics, sports coaching/training, piano, outdoor education, a/v, f+b, and technology. I have alot of skills that could apply in many different jobs, so I'm looking for the best industry that would appreciate those skills and pay me a decent amount, as well as have the ability to move up to 60-70k within a year. I may just have to stick it out in IT but at this time the pay is very poor for me.I am also proficient in Adobe Photoshop. I have no web design experience or knowledge. I'm really into archaeology and historical subjects and enjoy completing research... more

We have recently decided to switch to analog TV broadcast in our household and purchased a new outdoor antenna, but, at this point, can only connect it to one TV at a time. Is there any way we can connect it through our old cable network to send the signal to all of our TVs at once? more

Resolved Question: Weatherproof WiFi repeater?

I need some ideas for a weatherproof WiFi repeater, on-the-cheap. I can get a Belkin WURE (Wireless Universal Range Extender) on eBay for about $30 delivered but then I have to put it in something and get power/ventelation to it. I can't use WDS because none of my routers support WDS and WPA at the same time, and they also don't support DD-WRT due to hardware limitations. I think the Belkin extender will be my only choice. Also, if anyone has suggestions for something better, let me say what this will be used for... I'm going to finish college, and disconnect internet service because the relative I've been living with doesn't have a computer. I'm planning to make a deal with the neighbor, about 600 ft away line-of-sight, that I'll set them up with a wireless network totally free (I'll give them my router and enough network adapters to get everything running) in exchange for being able to use their internet when I visit on occation. The catch is I'll need to extend the range between our houses, and again to cover "my" house. I'm not looking for speed (although nice) -- just range. 1Mbps-1.5Mbps would be great, 1.5Mbps+ would be excellent (and more than what I have now). Here's the setup, as basic as possible: -->Host Router))) - (((Outdoor Repeater))) - (((Indoor Repeater))) - (((LaptopWhy the complex mess? Because it's much cheaper and easier. They don't have DSL available in their area, Dial-up runs at less-thin 14.4Kbps and 1.5Mbps Cable is up to $30 per month. Cellular data costs even more. When I finish college, I'll only be visiting them every month or two so it's not worth the monthly fee. I've provided wireless to this neighbor before using a similar setup, but only for a few hours -- and I didn't weatherproof anything. The connection was only 1Mbps and throughput tested at 512Mbps but it was better than nothing; I believe with 2 repeaters, if they didn't "run in circles" I could get a solid 1Mbps or greater throughput speed. more

Resolved Question: How can I receive a Local channel that Dish network refuses to show ?

Because of conflicts between the two stations. I have seen where people have been able to get that blocked channel through the receiver using a regular outdoor antenna (not by using ch.3 or 4 or in regular TV). The only difference is the info on that ch. does not display whats on the actual channel. How do you do this?I have an Off-Air input jack on the backside of my receiver box and I have a 10 ft Outdoor antenna that I've been using for 15 years and I've been able to receive about 16 digital channels at about 85% signal with it through my iMac(EyeTv) and my 50'' plasma TV but still haven't been able to put that local channel on the receiver. I have used a DTV converter as well. I was able to receive digital channels bypassing the receiver but it has to be on ch. 3 or 4. If thats what it takes I might as well hook the digital straight to the coaxial of the TV and leave the receiver on the Video & Audio input but that would be such a hassle. What I want is to have it on the satellite system itself like I have witnessed? more

Resolved Question: What kind of HDTV antenna do i need?

Resolved Question: Having probs with port forwarding. Can anyone pls help me?

I have gone to portforward.com but my model is not in the list. Also, my laptop is immediately connected to a HSDPA Wireless Access Terminal (ZTE MF600) where a separate phone line is connected and also an outdoor antenna. Does that replace my internal modem? Does that also mean a router? Also, sometimes, without me tweaking anything, my utorrent has green light, but most of the time, yellow (network prob), WHY is this so? I just subscribed to a 512 speed, but when my run a speedtest from my ISP, the benchmark indicates i'm faster than DSL but i know i couldn't be! Kindly enlighten, and pls refrain from joking... Lots of thanks to all. more

Resolved Question: A girl is murdered while sleeping in a tent in the back yard. Do you remember the title of this TV movie?

Based on a real-life case, this involved two families who are next-door neighbors and best friends. They have a picnic or barbecue, and the teenage daughter of one of the families asks if she can camp out with the other neighbors' daughter in a tent set up in their fenced-in back yard. Prior to that, the girls have a run-in with the neighborhood bad boy and his buddies, but no one thinks anymore of it~till later. Sometime during the night, the girl at whose house they're staying goes indoors, perhaps because it's more comfortable there or because she has argued with the other girl. I don't recall the reason. In the morning, when the outdoor girl hasn't come to the house for breakfast, they check on her and are shocked to find her dead, lying on her back, a pillow over her face. The other teen girl notices that there is a bandana lying next to the body, an article of clothing she believes belongs to the tough boy. This incident causes a fierce division between these former best friends, especially when the police point to the son of the host family as being a likely candidate for the crime, claiming he sexually attacked the girl then murdered her. Later, it is shown that the police are so confident in their choice of murderer that they make errors in collecting evidence, either mislabelling evidence, leaving items behind, and, it is discovered later, allowing some of it to be destroyed before it can be examined again! I don't recall the outcome of the case, but I think the accused boy's name was cleared. I don't think the police ever focused on the boys who had accosted the girls earlier. I think I saw this on Lifetime, but it might have been on some other network station, such as USA. It's definitely a made-for-television movie. I might recognize the name if I saw it, and I've been checking listings for many months till asking about it. Frustratingly, I can't recall who plays any of the parents, but I seem to recall that they are "TV name" actors, fairly well-known to audiences. I would estimate this film being from the mid- to late 1990s, but it could have been made in the 2000s. It would be difficult to judge from its style. I'm generally good at tracking down movies, but I've used many keywords and phrases to search the real-life case and the movie. I thought I'd toss this out to see how quickly it will be identified. more

Resolved Question: Wireless Network Advice around 900feet ( with picture ) ?

Hi, I need help with an outdoor wireless setup, basically I have the main internet connection ( and file server and other stuff ) at one point, and I would like to make the connection to the other point, the problem as you can see on the picture is LOS, there are many things in between one site and the other, the 2 sites are separated by around 900 feet, and I guess I can place antennas on both ends, but I really don't want to place a 30-60 feet antenna just for this, I believe that there has to be a way to make this connection that does not cost an arm and a leg. here is the picture http://www.internettico.com/wirelesssetup.jpg can someone point me in the right direction ! thank you !just so you guys know, I do not have a LOS, no I need something that I think they call it a nLOS setup, actually I do know that if I place antennas up high I can make the connection, but I want to see what else is there, before I put a pole up. and well all the red things on the pic are houseroofs more

Resolved Question: How can hockey become a more popular sport?

I play the sport and it seems like most others who play absolutely love it, yet games aren't even shown on ESPN or the major networks until the playoffs for both college and the NHL. The only thing that seems to work are the outdoor games played in football stadiums. Players as incredible as Gretzky also attract attention. In your opinion how can hockey become more popular? Thanks for your opinion Shiek. Probably a NASCAR fan. Thanks for supporting a "sport" that is partly responsible for rising gas prices. Or maybe you're a basketball fan. How much does it cost to have a ref make favorable calls for my team. If you're a football fan I don't blame you, I love football except for the BCS bullshit. more

Resolved Question: NHL to leave Versus (read on)?

NHL Signs Broadcast Deal With Food Network NEW YORK—Flanked by Food Network president Brooke Johnson and cooking-show host Rachael Ray, Commissioner Gary Bettman announced yesterday that the NHL has opted out of its contract with the Versus cable channel (formerly the Outdoor Life Network) and has reached a long-term broadcasting deal with the Food Network starting in the 2009-10 season. "In all my years as commissioner, I have learned that our diverse group of fans and players all enjoy food of some sort. Italian, French, barbecue, quick-and-easy 30-minute meals—you name it, one or more of them eat it," said Bettman, adding that Iron Chef French host Hiroyuki Sakai will join play-by-play announcer Mike "Doc" Emrick and analyst Brian Engblom to form a new lead announcing team for all Food Network games. "This partnership has been a long time coming. If the Food Network would have been around in 1991, we would have left ESPN in a heartbeat." “It’s great to know we will be on television next year,” Bettman added "We liked the idea of having hockey because it has two halftimes," said Food Network president Johnson, adding that the first game on the channel will feature the ceremonial dropping of an inaugural homemade Italian meatball at center ice by honorary referee Mario Batali. The new broadcasting deal has some sportswriters saying the move will make hockey even more irrelevant, while others believe this is a clear step up for the league. more
