Voting Question: How can I hook my Desktop to my HDTV?

Hello all, I have a desktop running Windows 7 Ultimate, with a cheap o Nvidia GeForce9500 GT graphics card; which has 2 DVI ports and 1 S-Video in the back of it. On the first DVI port I put a DVI to VGA adapter and hooked it up to my monitor that is only VGA. I have a 42" Sony Bravia LCD HDTV 1080p. It has 3 HDMI ports, 2 Component ports, 1 S-Video, and two....Hmm I forgot's but its YELLO-RED-White. All the HDMI ports are in use (PS3, XBOX, HD dish network satellite receiver) so I would rather not use them UNLESS I REALLY HAVE TOOOOO!!! The issue here is the TV does not has a DVI which I think sucks, in the back it says (PC IN RGB) which looks a lot like a VGA input. 1. How would I hook this up properly to make it look good? (a cable that is DVI to HDMI/ DVI to VGA?) 2. How would I set this up the cheapest way out there? (Simply buy another DVI to VGA adapter?)OK HDMI, but my graphics card does not have a HDMI output!!!I thoughts HDMI carried Video and Sound? more

Voting Question: Why can't I get Dish Network local channels despite living 35 miles from a major city?

I've never gotten a good answer in 10 years why I still don't "qualify" for local channels over Dish despite living very close to a major city in a bordering state. I thought the whole idea of satellite TV was it didn't matter where you live. I guess it does. I use an antenna to get locals now, but reception often fades for some stations, and switching back and forth between the two is tiresome. Any idea(other than politics) of why I can't get locals despite living so close to a major city?Dish's map of locals claim they serve 93/97% of the country. http://www.dishnetwork.com/packages/local/default.aspx I happen to live just outside Pittsburgh in Ohio, so I'm out of luck. I find this silly because if you live hundreds of miles from Pittsburgh in PA, you'll still get locals from them. I think it may have to do with our county's politics though, as they believe they are "protecting" their cable market ! more

Resolved Question: Why is Time Warner Cable going to drop Fox from its lineup?

My cable provider is Time Warner and for the past couple of weeks there are bunch of commercials saying that they are no longer going to carry the Fox channel. There are 2 different commercials. One says to write to them to tell them to keep it. The other commercial is by their competitor Dish Network (satellite TV) saying that since Time Warner is going to drop Fox you should now subscribe to Dish instead. So why are they dropping Fox?I find it interesting that American Idol - the highest rated show that airs on Fox, will start the new season in a couple of weeks. Seems like the want to hustle viewers to have to pay in order to view the show. I hope nobody caves in and their ratings drop. more

Voting Question: I have Dish Network and Tivo. Recently, Dish started turning off my receiver. What the?

This is supposedly for programming downloads (which I used to allow just via their satellite instead of via phone). He's on a long 1 month vacation so I can't ask him cause he's out of the country, that's why I depend on you guys. Voting Question: I'm moving a Dish Network receiver from one room to another, but how do I move the signal to the proper cable?

I'm moving a Dish Network Duo 322 receiver from one bedroom to another. I have a satellite jack in both rooms, but the jack in the new room has no signal running through it. I looked in the attic and found where all the connections are (including the cable that runs to the jack in the new room, however it is not connected to anything), but I'm confused by this splitter type thing (Holland DPD2). http://www.prosatellitesupply.com/diplexer_holland_X1.htm (picture of the splitter thing) I'm sure I can figure this out, but I have a couple questions about the DPD2. The port that is labeled In/Out, is that where I should be attempting to plug the cable from the new room in? Is the Sat jack the satellite input or output? And what is the UHF/VHF jack? Where does it lead, and should I be messing with that at all? Thanks for your help. more

Resolved Question: What cable service should I get?

We already looked at Cox Communications and it's too expensive so that's not an option. Dish network has too many hidden fees. What satellite service do you recommend that is at a good price. more

Voting Question: free-sat installation - why cant i find the satellite?

I believe the satellite i am aiming for is 28.2E Astra 2A, 2B, 2D. I am trying to do this installation for a friend, and they have sky+ HD with a new dish and all things, so i am certain the old dish and box work. Now i have set the dish + box up, but when i go to the signal test page on the sky box, it says Signal strength - around about half Signal Quality - none Network ID - 0000 Transport Stream - 0000 I have tried looking at other peoples dishes and facing them the same way, i have used a compass, and i have used a Satellite finder bought from amazon, and this satellite finder will make noise and the needle goes up and down, but it says i should turn the dial round until the needle drops, and move the dish slightly so the meter picks up again, but i get nothing. I've even used dishpointer.com, and still nothing, although when i set the dish elevation to 25.8°, but it seems to face too low.I have been out there for over a week. I am a patient man, but i am sure to soon give up. Can someone please help me, give me advice, tell me something im doing wrong, or not at all? more

Resolved Question: Is there an adapter for TV to double 3 red, yellow white plug receptacles - can't c'nect DVD & Sat recvr both.?

Went from Direct TV to Dish Network and they set me up with HD receiver pending my purchase of HD TV. Current TV only has one set of receptacles for red, yellow & white plugs. I need an adapter so I can connect DVD player and Satellite receiver at same time. Looks like someone would sell a "doubling" adapter so I could plug it in to TV and adapter would have two sets of receptacles, 6 total, i.e. 2 reds, 2 whites, 2 yellows. Anyone? more

Resolved Question: Which satellite service has the best international lineup? Dish Network or Direct TV?

My parents have had Dish Network for years now, and we like it. I live in Dallas, TX and moved into a townhouse recently, further North in Plano, about 15-20 minutes from my parents' house. A lot of things are new here, so I don't think there's been a lot of service issues with the satellites, etc. I just can't decide between Dish Network and Direct TV. And, even though I have AT&T phone and Wireless, I don't think I want their U-Verse for TV. I hear their customer service isn't great, and you get more storage on Dish/Direct TV DVRs. I don't need to record 4 shows at once. Some information about me: I am not a sports fanatic, so I don't need Direct TV's sports package. I enjoy watching foreign language channels and watching foreign dramas/comedies. I'm Iranian-American and speak Persian fluently (Persian dramas might be nice, but not necessary). I also speak Spanish well enough to enjoy those telenovelas. I'm learning other languages, so I'd like to watch programming from other countries to get better at speaking them. I would like to be able to watch good dramas from Italy, France, and Germany. Dish Network offers lots of International bundles, as well as a Euro Package with French, Italian and German programming. I'm a fan of Korean dramas, and would like to find the company that offers the BEST programming with English subtitles. Dish has KBS; I hear the dramas are subtitled. Direct TV offers SBS and MBC, but I read that those channels are not subtitled (though that could have changed). So, I've gathered Dish Network offers more variety in international programming. I know for instance, that if I get Dish, I can probably purchase MBC Korean dramas online. The same goes for Japanese dramas, but I'd prefer to pick the company that has the best Korean and Japanese programming in English subtitles, as well as other international programming. I also like anime, and though Dish doesn't have an anime channel, they have programming on Cartoon Network, IFC, and sometimes other channels. It would be nice to find an anime channel. Both satellite companies have basically the same programming, but I hear Dish Network has better customer service (guess it all depends on where you live). I also plan on getting a DVR package with the most HD channels. more

Resolved Question: Is it possible to up convert standard definition satellite tv to hd?

Okay, here goes, I have Dish Network with a Dish DVR 625 and I recently bought an HDTV and I really don't know if I can up convert Standard definition Satellite tv to HDTV I know you can with an up converting DVD player. Is it possible? more

Resolved Question: Anyone have experience with Dish Network or Direct T.V. DVR's?

We currently have Time Warner but after there lousy customer service this week (and their many stupid excuses) we are now looking into switching to satellite (as there is no other cable company in town). We currently have a tivo and love it and doesn't break within 2 months like Time Warner's does. So if we switch to either Dish or Direct T.V. could we still use the Tivo? If not how are their DVR's? We don't mind using other DVR's even though we prefer Tivo but would like one that actually works and is reliable (went through 6 of Time Warners in 1 year) . Thanks for your help.I talked to Dish through their chat and all I got was that tivo will work but it would be better to use their equipment (which of course is what they are there for). Also, I asked them how reliable their DVR was and they said its state of the art but thats also the same thing Time Warner says and theres is not. So I'm pretty much wanting to know from people with the service if it actually is good equipment or not. We would like to use Tivo but don't have to if their equipment is good! more

Voting Question: satellite tv multiple dvr recievers?

I'm thinking of picking up dish network service. With a two year contract I can get a H/D DVR receiver price waived. Now to add another H/D DVR they want $100.00 plus $6.00 mo. lease fee. I can pick up the same unit on Ebay for $300.00. Would I be better off to buy the unit? What I'm actually going to do with it is take it to my summer home that already has Dish installed on the roof. So Both my home and Summer cabin will have the same service. What I'm trying to do is get the same service at my lake cabin as what I have at my home. Question is Pay the extra $100 and lease it or go to Best buy or wherever and buy it. Over the term of the contract to lease it would be $250. Looks like it would take about 4 years to break even. more

Resolved Question: What do we do with our old Dish Network satellite dish?

We no longer use this service and the dish has been collecting dust in our garage. What the heck do we do with it? I'm not going to throw it in the landfill. Can we sell it? Or give it away on Craigslist/Freecycle? Would somebody else be able to use it? more

Resolved Question: Why is there a limit to the number of TV's that can be connected to a Satellite dish?

Every time I hear DirecTV or Dish Network's advertisement on TV, they say that you get their services for up to 4 TV's. Why can't there be more than 4 TV's connected to their service? Is that one reason why Satellite TV costs less than Cable TV? more

Resolved Question: How do I get my DVD player to work?

I got a satellite dish network installed 2 days ago. I just found out how to work the VCR player yesterday. But I can't seem to figure out how to play my DVD player. Before I got the installation, I only need to press the TV/Video button on my remote to work. In "Video" mode it's always a black screen at first. But now in the "Video" mode, it's not the same, it's all the different channels(100). Anyone know how to work the DVD player from my situation? What is the set-up box? I checked the plugs on my DVD player and 3(yellow, red, white) plugs are connected to the VCR player not the TV. more

Resolved Question: HD programming & Dish Network?

I have bought a hdtv, and will getting the hdtv sat box. Do I need to pay the extra money for HD programming fee? Some networks and programs already broadcast in HD. I also already have HD capable recieving satellite dish. Thanks ahead of time T more

Voting Question: Can a company charge me more each month because of their mistake?

I have had comcast internet for about a year when I signed up. The promotion was for a cheap 3 month introductory rate and then a regular rate. I have Dish Network satellite service so I do not need cable service. So Comcast called me up today and said they were charging me a bundled rate and tried to get me to go for another offer of free year of basic cable so I guess they could get me out of what I'm paying now and into a package. I told them that I would think about it and did not agree to anything. So my question is... can they change it just because it's their mistake if I don't agree to the new package? The difference in the rate would be about 12 to 15 bucks a month. more

Resolved Question: Does a satellite dish need to have a ground wire?

I have had several satellite dishes installed on my home in the past and none have ever had a ground wire connected to them. I just had a new dish put up by dish network and I noticed a green ground wire coming from it... why does it now require a ground wire? I have a second dish for my international channels and that dish isn't grounded... should it be or is ok to leave it the way it is? more

Resolved Question: Why did China stifle Obama's charisma?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20091118/pl_afp/chinausdiplomacyobamapolitics China stifles Obama charisma BEIJING (AFP) – Something got lost in transit in US President Barack Obama's visit to China -- the charismatic rhetoric and dominance of mass communication that took him from nowhere to the White House. Obama built his political persona with soaring speeches on a grand stage and by reaching out to a vast grassroots network on the Internet. But in China, Obama's hosts successfully stifled those prodigious public talents, keeping his message from the people with media censorship and smothering it in staid diplo-speak. On previous foreign trips in his taxing first year in office, the president sent inspiring words winging to millions of satellite dishes in the Muslim world and sparked Obama mania in Europe. But in China, it has been tougher to reach out to ordinary citizens. His best attempt, a town hall meeting streamed on the White House website, suffered from what was largely a nationwide media blackout. And Obama's talks on Tuesday with President Hu Jintao were followed by a dull public appearance, with both leaders reading out statements to the media stuffed with diplomatic code words. What was the reason for this? Your thoughts?? more

Resolved Question: Programming My Dish Network Satelite to My New Remote?

I lost of old remote to my Satellite and a friend gave me one of his old ones. Its identical to my old one but I can not program it for anything. Resolved Question: Which satellite TV package offers the LEAST amount of religious programming?

I want to get satellite TV, but every package looks like I have to buy a whole pile of crap just to get the handful of channels that I might actually want to watch. Resolved Question: How do I attach an outdoor antenna to my Dish Network Receiver?

I have Dish Network with HD. I am trying to mount an outdoor antenna to the roof, and attach the antenna to the Dish Network Receiver. Will I be able to attach both the antenna and the satellite dish to a splitter, and run one wire into the receiver, or will I need to run a separate wire from the antenna to the receiver. Secondly, if I'm not able to combine the two into one wire, how do I run the wire from the antenna through the house out the wall? I've never done this before. Please be specific in your answers. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Sould I go with Directv or dish network?

We are entertaining the idea of going with a Satellite service. I am wondering which service is better below are a few questions that I have: 1) Is one provider better then the other for the "Blackout" issues in snow or rain? 2) We currently have cable. One of our TV's is HD and does not require a receiver... Will I need a box for EVERY TV in the house with Satellite or will my HD television function without the receiver? 3) After the 12 month initial Sign on, what are the fees like after that? 4) Do I have to upgrade to HD service to get HD channels that are already broadcast in HD...Does no HD receiver mean NO HD television at all? 5) We are only looking for basic service and do not need all the "Bell's & Whistles". As long as we get our local channels, we do not need any additional sports channels. I would have to say the Independent/foreign/arts type channels are more important to us. Does one service better fit this description over the other? Thanks for your help! more

Resolved Question: Can the Xbox 360 controller effect a TV remote?

I have a 2 TV-one box system setup from Dish Network for my satellite TV. We have the box in the basement next to an Xbox 360 and it is very difficult to change the channel upstairs whenever I play an Xbox 360 game. We have two wireless controllers to play with. My question is, can the signals from the wireless controller and Xbox 360 interfere with the TV remote's signal? If so, would buying wired controllers fix the problem? more

Resolved Question: Satellite Reciever doesn't work upstairs?

I have a DISH Network DISH 322 Dual Output Satellite Receiver that is in the basement. It can connect to a tv and also all other tvs connected to a cable jack can have a different channel then the tv connected to it. I no longer have a tv in the basement and have 2 tvs on the main floor. I want to move the reciever to the main floor so the two tvs can view different channels at the same time. I tried connecting it today but the tv not connected to the reciever does not receive the signal. I am 100% positive that I did connect the reciever right. I moved it back downstairs to the basement and both tvs received the signals again. I don't want to put it downstairs because then the two tvs on the main floor have to watch the same channel. I want to move it up to the main floors so the 2 tvs can watch different channels at the same time. Can somebody tell me why the receiver works when I put it downstairs in the basement but not when I put it on the main floor? And again, I am 100% sure i connected it right.http://www.solidsignal.com/pview.asp?p=dish322&d=DISH-Network-DISH-322-Dual-Output-Satellite-Receiver(DISH322)-119941&sku=753960008325&mc=02 more
