The College Network Questions asked

Open Question: Why do IT jobs require a Bachelors in Comp. Sci?

It seems like many Information Technology jobs require a Bachelors or better in Computer Science -- Even though computer science is the study of mathematics and computer architecture and IT is more of a vocational job, requiring training in certain software and networking, etc. It seems like college courses aimed at such a position aren't enough for said position! more

Open Question: For a job in IT, should go to college or university?

I live in Winnipeg, MB. I have been fairly set on going to Red River College for their Business Information Technology program, to get my Information Systems Tech. diploma (likely majoring in Network Management or Database Administration) Recently, I have started considering university, as well. I know employers seem to prefer degrees to a diploma, so the *obvious* choice in this circumstance would be university. However -- I have been in school already for 12 years of my life. Is another 4 (or more!) really worth it? I'm very well-versed when it comes to things like networking, server administration, etc. Red River college can have me trained and into the IT workforce in 2 years -- The *minimum* for other programs would be 4. On the other hand, computers have ALWAYS been my passion -- I have always taken a huge interest things like networking, enterprise-level IT operations, etc. I wouldn't consider myself a science-y person, but perhaps a Bachelors or Masters degree is just the thing for me? more

Open Question: what colleges should i look into in Indiana for computer networking?

Open Question: C++ Socket not working on college network?

I was intending to create a poker game using c++ (win32 console), I intended for this game to be multiplayer across different computers. I worked out how to do this via use of sockets, now my problem is that the sockets will not communicate with eachother at college - whilst they work fine on my home network. I have tryed various different ports. I found a visual basic (vb 6) application that used sockets to create a chat room, this program used port 10. This program manages to send information from one computer to another, but mine won't - I tryed using port 10 also, but it didn't work on my c++ game. Below I have included a pastebins of my source code: Main.cpp - http://pastebin.com/m5a310298 Socket.h - http://pastebin.com/m4b57879f Socket.cpp - http://pastebin.com/m5ca870b4 At first I thought that the college just blocked all unused ports, but after the chat room program working on port 10 - I don't see how this could be the case, but at the same time my program works on my home network.oops sorry, I use 2 projects but merged the code into one for the sake of this question - I missed out the server's project main.cpp code: ServerSocket sockServer; cout<<"HOSTING..."<<endl; sockServer.StartHosting( port ); sockServer.SendData("1"); sockServer.RecvData( recMessage, STRLEN );Sorry, forgot to clarify: I'm actually coding this as two separate projects, one for the server and one for the client - I just merged the code in the paste bins - some of it may be incorrect. I'm also not trying to connect from college to home or vice versa, the program works at home - from one computer to another. But not at college from one computer to another. The string IP address is just because I'm home at the moment testing it, at college I was indeed setting it as the correct IP. Also thanks for the information about informing what bytes the message is - I'll look into it and do some research on the protocol (i'm new to sockets, this is a way for me to learn more). more

Open Question: winsock Socket in c++ not working in my college, but a Visual basic socket application does work?

What could be wrong, the visual basic app used port 10 - I tried this on the c++ application and it still didn't work. I was thinking maybe I need to set some sort of LAN settings, the application networks fine at home across 2 computers - and fine at college on a single computer (loopback 127.0.0.1) more

Resolved Question: Is this how the first year of college should be? Is this normal?

So, it's been a semester, and I don't really know if I'm living up to all that I can. I feel like I'm losing myself, like I'm not who I used to be, and it's a very sad thing -- it's not really for the better. I never have been a partier, EVER, in high school. This wasn't really because of any morals or anything, I was just never in that social circle. I don't think people invited me because they thought I had a lot of morals or something. Well, here I am in college, and I'm having a lot of trouble socializing, I'm willing to party, but nothing seems to ever come my way. I went to one party and I didn't really know anyone so I left before even having a drink. It's been an entire semester and I have an ok social network of people from my old high school and people from their dorms and some people from my dorm (an all girls dorm, which is not the most social....) and some from classes... but I haven't found my click yet, my niche. And it's thoroughly bumming me out. I just want to know if this is normal at all. Oh, and as a PS, I've been spending an entire semester sort of getting over this guy from high school and a summer... fling I guess you could say. Seriously, how normal is that? I just really need to get a frame of reference here. and perhaps some advice.... I'm not a bad socializer, and I've been to 9 different schools before coming to college so I'm used to switching schools... what's so different about this? and why am I feeling this way? Like nothing is ever going be good enough? more

Open Question: Sometimes divorces can be good. Right?

I mean they were created for a reason. If someone married for the wrong reasons, lets say for money, stability, to escape an abusive home, for citizenship, insurance, because of a pregnancy and so on. Or lets say two people grow apart, literally. One of them gets a college degree and comes out a completely different person. Or lets say one of them comes out of the closet. Or one of them unfortunately becomes addicted to drugs or an alcoholic, or either one or both fall in love with someone else. So many legit reasons right? Is it ever okay, does it ever turn out to be the best for a person? And if so, why does it feel so horrible? How can this be easier, if you know its the right thing. I need wisdom and guidance. I wish I had a good support network. Unfortunately nobody gets it, that's why I need your opinions. Help me. more

Resolved Question: Why don't Women's Right Groups want to celebrate the Tebow's family story?

The former Florida quarterback, who's known for writing Bible verses under his eyes, has been receiving criticism for starring in a planned Super Bowl commercial that critics say conveys an anti-abortion message. Jehmu Greene, president of Women's Media Center, asked CBS on Monday not to air the commercial, saying, "An ad that uses sports to divide rather than to unite has no place in the biggest national sporting event of the year." The Women's Media Center is coordinating the effort to have the ad pulled with support from the National Organization for Women and the Feminist Majority Foundation. A CBS spokesman said it had approved the advertisement's script and it would be "appropriate for air." The network said today it would be willing to air more advocacy ads during the Super Bowl. Tebow and his mother, Pam Tebow, appear in the advertisement, which was financed by the conservative Christian group Focus on the Family. In the expected ad, Pam recounts how doctors recommended she have an abortion after developing complications while pregnant with Tim. The ad also shows how Tim went on to become one of the most successful college quarterbacks in the country. "I know some people won't agree with it, but I think they can at least respect that I stand up for what I believe," Tim Tebow said. Focus on the Family spokesman Gary Schneeberger said his group was "a little surprised" by the controversy the ad had drawn. "There's nothing political or controversial about it," he said. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sports_blog/2010/01/tim-tebow-super-bowl-ad-prolife-womens-media-center-controversy-pam-abortion.html Why are Women's Groups afraid of people hearing their story? more

Open Question: Chances of getting accepted... into any UC?

Well, I haven't been trying, times have been hard. Have no excuse. But I was just wondering what are the chances of me getting accepted to pretty much any UC (I wish I could get into UCI :( My Aunt works there). Next semester I will vastly improve, no doubt, and same goes for next year. But here are my grades.     Freshman Year *Biology - A *Algebra 1 - C Journalism - A English - B Health - A Football - A   Sophomore Year: English - B Geometry - B World History - A French - C Chemistry - A Track and Field - A    Next Year (Junior): AP US History AP Lit Precalc Physics (Or AP Enviromental Science) AP Comp. Sci (should be VERY easy, already know C, course is in Java). French 2 Digital Media (for art's credit) I'm planning on taking Alg. 2 Trig. over summer at a Community College. I know my grades are bad, my overall GPA is about a 3.4, but I am just wondering (based 100% of your opinion) of my chances of getting into a UC? I would love to go to UCI, but I would be willing to go to a different UC. My backup is CSULB, but I would do anything to get into a UC instead of a CSU. Basically I am just looking for an opinion, that's all, thanks. *I'm also thinking about taking an ROP after school class for IT Network Essentials; Hardware and Software class next year too. I want to be a Computer Science Engineer, or possibly an Aerospace Engineer. Leaning towards Comp. Sci but my math is, well lacking. Also, do you think I could manage to complete Alg. 2 trig over summer at a Community College? Thanks for any answers :) more

Open Question: Can anyone tell me where I can get help setting up a complex network?

I understand the principals of networking having taken a server college level courses. Either, I'm taking the incorrect steps with XP's Network Setup wizard or to reach my goal, I have to go beyond the scope of the wizard and make some setting changes myself, directly. I don't want to publicize too much because I don't want every hacker on the 'Net taking pot shots at my server, yet, I'm at an impasse at the details @ what I need to know. Were I to reduce my dilemma down to it's LCD, I suspect I need to manually and delicately make some adjustments to the settings of one of my network cards. I need to to of two things, and maybe both to accomplish my goal: 1 - How do I establish a static IP address for a NIC using Windows XP Pro? 2 - How do I enable the same NIC (or another, if necessary) to take over the duties of issueing IP Addresses to the other computers in my network?Tech Dude, can you contact me directly concerning more specific information I don't want to display here...thanks more

Open Question: Could you grade my ACT essay? (Pretty please!)?

Hey guys - I'm from Australia and so have no real concept of how my essay would be graded by ACT markers. I'd really appreciate it if you could let me know where you think it lies (without writing my practice tests are at about a 35, so I'm hoping the writing is okay!). Cheers! (PS. I use Angolcised spelling, hence why you may feel there's a lack of "z's" and too many "u's"!) PROMPT: In some states, legislators have debated whether teenagers should be required to maintain a “C” grade average in school before receiving a driver’s license. Some people think this would be a good policy because having passing grades shows that students are responsible enough o be good drivers. Other people think such a policy would not be appropriate because they see no relationship between grades in school and driving skills. In your opinion, should teenagers be required to maintain a “C” average in school before receiving a driver’s license? RESPONSE: There should remain a firm separation of academic success and civil privileges. Enforcing a law that correlates school results with driving rights would be detrimental to a wide cross-section of society. Whilst the concept of rewarding students for good results is noble and well-intentioned, it could ultimately cause economic disadvantage to those already struggling to gain educational qualifications. The importance of academic and vocational success is one of the cornerstones of Western society. A person's sense of identity is often founded upon their occupation - hence the reason many people in the West introduce themselves in a vocational context (it's common to meet someone who says "Hi, I'm Joe, and I'm an accountant"). This trait causes a lot of pressure upon the younger generation to achieve a particular level of educational success. Ultimately, we value academics and vocational accomplishment It is thus understandable to suggest creating a formal legislative bond between education and civil liberties; to essentially reward a person for achieving highly in their pre-vocational training. Putting such legislation into action, however, would have serious consequences that may ultimately be detrimental to society as a whole. Whilst many adolescents "cruise" through school on a C-grade average out of choice, there are equally those who score C-averages because it's simply all they are capable of. For these students, academia is clearly a already a problem. Where college (and perhaps even simple technical training) is now out of reach, there remains only a short list of options available to pursue after school. Preventing these students access to a motor vehicle may further limit their ability to find work, and hence financially support themselves. Furthermore, reducing below-average students' ability to transport freely can limit their social networks, hence potentially causing problems in other aspects of their lives. The combined socio-economic impacts of denying poorly-performing students a driving license would only widen the gap between those with opportunities and those without. To add to this, some of these potentially unemployable people would cause a strain on social welfare mechanisms in the future, placing additional excess demand on administrative spending. Secondly, formalising the relationship between academia and civil liberties (by way of driving rights) would raise the issue of relativity between students and schools. Such a law would be unable to accomodate the fact that, for some students and schools, a "C" might be an achievement. It is impossible to expect every student within one state, and indeed the nation, to be of the exact same ability, and have the same expectations. Those who feel as if they succeeded in scoring a "C" would feel marginalised from the mainstream. Effectively, a form of academic elitism would be legalised within the schoolyard. Expecting every student to have equal expectations of themselves is ludicrous; they should instead be rewarded based on how they perform according to their own standards. Comparing a remarkably intelligent student against a below-average one will dishearten many underperformers. In many cases, they may be discouraged from trying further, and hence, instead of the law creating an incentive to work hard, it would merely push some students away. Ultimately, high performing students should be rewarded - and they most often are; it's a natural function of our Western cultural structure. We should do this, however, inclusively - that is, inviting students to build upon their own expectation, rather than exclusively (removing underperformers from the pool). The proposed meshing of civil liberties with academic/vocational success undermines the egalitarian values of our society - one where, despite the cards a person is drawn in life, everyone has the chance to live inclusively and comfortably amongst their peers. While it is incredibly admirable and productive to encourage adolescents to e more

Resolved Question: "Virus Program" has taken over my computer? For the last few days I've been having a major virus related issue?

"Virus Program" has taken over my computer? For the last few days I've been having a major virus related issue. I have AVG and Ad-Aware which run constantly in the background, and I also have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware which I have never really used before until now. I use a wireless internet connecting through my computer to my University's wireless network. My problem is that now whenever I have my computer on, a few minutes after I start it up I get messages from an "antivirus" program that I do not have, telling me that windows has detected a security threat, that my computer is infected and saying "click here for the scan you computer" (certainly a very trustworthy program). I always close the bubble but then I get bombarded with messages that specific files are infected. Usually it says "Application cannot be executed. The file wuauclt.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?" I don't know what wuaclt is. Whenever I try to open a program -- any program at all, whether it be itunes or just my program manager, the message changes specific to whatever I'm trying to open: "the file itunes.exe is infected" or whatever, and usually the program does not open. These messages come from my taskbar where there is a little blue shield icon with a white stripe. I have tried right-clicking on this icon to close it like I would do with any "normal" application in the taskbar, and when I do it pulls up a "virus scan" window for "Antivirus Live" with 34 infections found -- always the same things. It often, but not always, will also open a window in the main screen of my computer giving me the same message and playing that distinctive "windows error" sound. After a while, it will automatically open an IE browser window (I use Firefox) asking me to buy this "Antivirus Live" program for $50 to $70. I closed this window a few minutes ago and it automatically opened another IE window with a porn site -- very classy when I"m working the front desk of my building. It will also open the Windows Security Center automatically, but I don't think it's the real security center because it says that I do not have anti-virus protection when in fact I do. The first few times this happened, it would either go away on its own after a few minutes, or I could restart my computer and it would work properly on restart. Since my antivirus/antispyware programs weren't finding anything significant I didn't worry too much, and there was a full day of no problems at all. Now, however, the problem seems worse than ever, and I can't even really use my computer. As a college student this is a major problem for me. AVG has found a few trojans and quite a few tracking cookies, but removing them has not taken care of the problem. The anti-spyware and anti-malware have not found anything. I just downloaded and installed avast, which I used to have a while ago and I prefer over AVG, and I'm currently running a scan but it hasn't found anything yet. I don't know what is going on but it's driving me crazy and I would like any help available to try and fix it. more

Open Question: why did he suddenly start talking to me?

Last night was my last class for college, and when we got out, this guy from class that I have never talked to before was walking in front of me. He turned around, saw me, and started talking about how one of my group members was missing for my presentation and how shady it was of them, etc. Then he asked my year, and we talked about the final and my job search. He offered to help me look for a job and let me know if he found anything, and walked together for another few minutes until I got to the train. He told me bye and he'd see me next week for the final. Why all of a sudden did he start talking to me? He was he just trying to network? more

Open Question: How does one start a grass roots movement?

I know this question is a very broad one but I am looking for a social networking site where I would like to be able to talk about issues. And Facebook and Twitter don't exactly lend themselves to serious thought. One example: I think the cost of going to college/university is out of control. More specifically, on-line schools like the University of Phoenix are over-priced and most recruiters will not take your resume seriously with a UOP degree. I actually worked as an enrollment counselor for UOP and trust me when I tell you that it is one of the biggest ripoffs in our country today. I was trained on how to manipulate and take advantage of young and desparate individuals. Working as an enrollment counselor was worse than working as a used car salesmen because at least if you sell a used car, the people are getting something of value. At UOP, the tuition is overpriced and the education is poor. Go to any Fortune 500 company and look at where they recruit university graduates. You rarely if EVER see UOP on their list. The bottom line is that I feel guilty for leading people down a dead end street only to see them still without a decent job but over their heads in debt. It is a shame that the government is allowing so many school loans to on-line schools like UOP. If you are serious about getting a degree, you are better off going to a community college first and then transferring your credits to a brick and mortar university. It will save you a lot of money and will put you in a much better position to find a good job. Now, any suggestions as to where I might take my argument would be greatly appreciated! more

Open Question: How to set the domain on a Wireless Network in Windows 7?

I just installed Windows 7 on my laptop and at my local college one is required to provide a username, password, and domain to connect to the wireless network. However, on 7, the prompt that pops up only allows me to enter a username/password, and without entering the domain, I cannot connect. Is there any way that I can enable the domain entry field or manually enter the domain? more

Voting Question: Do major broadcasting networks factor online viewers (such as hulu.com) into their ratings?

Because if not... that is a big shame for Conan O'Brian... since I bet anything most of his viewers have been getting their fix online, especially being of the younger generation. Most of my friends and I in college certainly have (haven't owned a TV in years), and we're all with coco. Seriously? Reinstating Leno... a really big step in the WRONG direction. He's only getting older NBC. more

Resolved Question: Why is it ok, and ignored in America?

I am talking about racism against white people. Back in high school I was called a "cracker" or "red neck" these seem to be slanderous words, but if I was to say ni**r I would of been expelled. Also there are college funds especially for African Americans. If there was an equal fund but for white Americans it would immediately be called racist and unfair. There are law suites against company's when they don't use African Americans for models I.e abercrombie, Thf. While fobo, rhino, Dont or hardley ever use white models. There is B.E.T. If there was a white Entertainment network there would be riots!! Why are these unfair double standards? more

Voting Question: What does everyone think about this?

I am a 26yr old woman of Nigerian descent. Came into the country as a teenager, college educated and worked different jobs. Now as you can see i come from a culture where parents push their kids to be the best you can be. It does not help that i have a mother who has a PHD in a hard science. I did not go to law school and do the things she wanted just because i did not want to. i went straight to the working world and started earning money. Now i have been to several different events as the country is large and separated by ethnic groups. I have been 2yrs in a row and networked but most of the guys there are really not serious, they are just looking to see how many girls they can get in their pants in one weekend. I have had some past relationships but she does everything to sabotage every relationship i have had. I would love to be with a man that truly loves me but i tend to find that Nigerian men are very aggressive and primitive when it comes to women issues. I found an older man that i like and things were going well but he insists on not meeting my family just yet as he isn't ready. Now my 57yr old mother is like oh no... he is not good enough for you he is from this tribe and blah blah blah... now i want to go to law school on my own merity because the economy is bad i am not interested in dealing with this whole marriage bullshit.. My point is that i am sick and tired of her butting into my life every chance she gets talking about no one is good enough for me. I am not that far from 30 but yet every man i meet and introduce to mom, she makes sure to say they are not good enough but then she is insistent on a Nigerian man. Don't you think she contradicts herself all the time? Sick of this old woman... just sick of her.... more

Voting Question: Limited connectivity Vista every 2-3 hours?

I know this question has been asked quite a bit and I looked up all the answers but mine still does not work. It always does this after I reformat my hard drive but it usually stops after a few days, but not this time. So everything works fine with my wireless connection and then all of a sudden my net goes out and I get the limited connectivity message in my task bar. When this happens my computer does not find ANY of the wireless networks in my area (such as neighbors that are usually in the list) It says 0 wireless connections found. Even unplugging the router and plugging it back in wont fix it. I even reset the router to factory settings and set up everything from scratch but still the same problem. The only way I can fix it is to restart my laptop and then it works again for about 2-3 hours sometimes longer sometimes less and then it happens again. I am using a WRT100 Linksys router and DHCP Server is enabled, my computer is set to obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS Server address automatically. When I get the limited connectivity my daughters and husbands laptops still work fine. Any ideas? Who would I contact if I cant get nothing to work? Would I contact Linksys (is it a router issue?) or would I contact Acer (Is it a problem with Wireless adapter, vista, etc. ?). Thanks in advance I hope someone can help me out because it really sucks when I am in the middle of college work and constantly have to restart my laptop. more

Voting Question: Am I a good candidate for the University of Miami so far? (I take the SAT's this Spring.)?

I am currently a junior in high school and I have been looking ahead to my future a lot so far. I would like to go to college to double major in journalism and broadcasting. Then I would like to become a sports broadcaster or sports journalist. I know it's best to go to college in a big metropolitan city that is pretty sports oriented if I want to one-day work in sports, that's why Miami is the top city in my list. ______________________________________ My current grades during junior year (this year): Crafts – 97 Comp. I am also a sports reporter for my high school’s newspaper, The Rocket Star and I have my own sports column called Player of the Month. I used to volunteer at an after school day care for kids 8th grade and down. Helping them with homework, playing games, and giving them snack. Finally, during my junior (this year) and senior year of high school I have a student internship with WOYK, a sports radio-broadcasting network, for both the football and basketball seasons. I will go to all my school’s home and away game, collect stats, call in stats, and broadcast the game I reviewed on live radio. more

Voting Question: How do I move on from being a nanny to a professional career?

Ok, so I'm 28. Grew up and (still) live with my big Italian family on Long Island, NY. I received an associates degree in Liberal Arts/Sciences from a SUNY school, then transferred to sell my soul for tuition at a private school for a year until I came to realize that I was digging myself a financial hole with an annual $32,000 loan and never registered again after. So with that, while I was in school I became a nanny, a live out nanny. Ive been a nanny for 6 years now. I've always wanted to have a real career (hence my college endeavors) however, the money and freedom that came with the occupation of a nanny was far too good to walk away from. I make $1000 off the books per week (Monday-Friday 8am-6pm with 2-5hour breaks in between depending on the day and about 5 or 6 weeks of paid vacation a year- yes I know, it really is a great job). The problem is, the youngest child under my care will be attending kindergarten full-time this coming September and I will no longer be needed. I have always networked myself in the town and have met lots of families that have been trying to steal me away from the family I have been with all these years. However, I don't want to be a professional nanny anymore! I want a real job! A career. I always have. So now, all these years have passed me by and I have no bachelor degree and no experience. Although I'm a fast learner, very smart, witty, educated and have great work ethic, all that doesn't add up to much on a resume. So my question is... what are my options? I have been making strides towards finishing a bachelor degree at a community college, but Ive only been taking 1 class per semester so it seems like a world away. Also, I'm kind of over the idea of school. To be honest, I would just like to do some job training and land something that way. Is this possible? I'm really open to pretty much anything, although I am mostly interested in sales, because I'm a people person. I understand that finding any kind of employment is difficult in these trying times, especially with my current salary, but I am eager to work and am willing to start out at the bottom and work my way up wherever. I have tossed around the idea of a trade school or something like an LPN program or something related but I think I'm more of a business-minded person; but like I said... I'm really open to just about anything. Any suggestions? more

Open Question: Parents, would you allow your daughter to date somebody like me?

I have Asperger's Syndrome, which is a from of High Functioning Autism. I don't have all the characteristics, but right now I'm trying to improve my social skills, my mom and dad say that I've come a long way with it, and that I keep up the good work, I could have above average social skills despite having Asperger's. Also, I'm very smart, nice, caring, but a little shy. I'm enrolled in a community college majoring in computer networking and I'm about to graduate. I'm not wanting to date anybody at the moment, but I'm sure I will in the future. I try to be optimistic. Most of all, my parents have told me that I've been a trooper and that I'm very certain that I'll live a normal life! more

When at home I could easily access the deviantart chat on my laptop, and even had the mozilla plug-in as well as SuperdAmn installed. Chats are vital for some of the groups I belong to. more

Resolved Question: "Virus Program" has taken over my computer?

Voting Question: Cartoon animation jobs in New York City?

I am currently in college and plan on taking a major that would allow me to learn how to animation cartoons. I would like to work at a major animation studio someday, and possibly start my own show. Resolved Question: Where can i look for jobs other than online (read details please!)?

I've been looking for jobs online for a very long time with no luck. I know that it's hard to gte a job from an online posting, but here's my problem: I have NO friends or past business contacts that can help me, so how do I network?? I actually have very few friends and fewer business contacts so the pool is very small. Also, besides retail jobs, you cannot just walk into places and just apply... they will not even let you past the lobby, they'll tell you to apply online. I've tried newspapers which are worse than online. What can I do?? I'm at my wits end. I'm constantly applying to jobs that I qualified or over qualified for, and they all reject me. My resume & interview skills re great, so I don't know what's going on... I don't know what to do anymore. I'm 28 with a college degree and headed no where. No money, no job. Resolved Question: Im in 7th grade and im entering a essay contest competing against other 7ths and some 8ths.?

Tell me your FIRST opinion of the first half of my essay. The Internet: Today’s revolution or tomorrow’s menace? Think about the Internet. Done? What did you come up with? Maybe you thought of the fact that even during an economic downpour people use the Internet to e-mail resumes to potential jobs. Or you might of thought of the thousand of websites and their seemingly endless amount of stored information. Plus the search engines that you can use to search the information with almost no trouble at all. Maybe, just maybe, you thought of the fact that the word of the year for 2009 was unfriend. Which means to delete someone as a friend on a social networking website such as facebook. People can send e-mail, post updates, and chat with lost friends or loving family members on one of the thousands of social networks dedicated to keeping people connected. You can post blogs to these websites to spread your opinion to the world. Students can use the Internet to research information for projects. Then they can see these grades even before the teacher shows you, so that you know if you need to work harder or re-do work. They can also use the Internet to look at potential colleges and to send the college applications. It’s also true that students use the internet for entertainment. (Which, in my opinion, is the only fault of the internet. It gives another reason for kids to sit around and do nothing.) more
