Antenna Radio Satellite Questions asked

Resolved Question: Poor shortwave reception?

I just recently bought a shortwave radio for $40, the radioshack guy said it was a good buy. I went home and turned it on and I don't have that good of reception. I have tried hooking it up to my satellite dish, a makeshift antenna and nothing has worked. I have no money as of now, is there anyway to increase my reception using just household items? What would you guys do? Thanks for all positive answers! more

Resolved Question: New XM Radio? Isn't Working?

i bought the XMp3i satellite radio. i activated the service online and then hooked everything up. basically i plugged in the dock (which is working-- well, charging) and then the antenna thing. on the device, half the time it doesn't give me the option for "antenna aiming" and when it does, it can't find a signal. does it need a certain amount of time to find a signal? because i've tried it in several locations and it just won't find a signal. are there houses that just can't get a signal? i got this one because i could use it in the car, on the go, or at home. i'm paying $100 to get it installed in the car in a couple days and don't want to do that if i can't get a signal at home. can someone help me?? this is my first one and it is crazy frustrating!i do have a lot of trees. i stood in the middle of my street with no obstructions and it had a like 1/3 signal for both (satellite and terrestrial). but it STILL wouldn't let me view any channels. if i typed in a channel it said "not authorized" what is going wrong?! more

Resolved Question: What "UP" With Those Giant TV Antenna Masts and Towers?

Given the presence of structures like the KVLY-TV broadcast antenna mast near Blanchard, North Dakota (currently the 2nd-highest man-made structure on earth) . . . what is the need for such expensively maintained antennas? (Also, the many TV antennas—other than radio or microwave/cell antennas—seen on buildings like Chicago’s Willis Tower) Aren’t most people getting their television content via cable or satellite providers? A person can get free reception of digital TV, but I wonder if enough folks do this anymore for TV stations to financially justify such big broadcast installations. What do you think? more

Resolved Question: Problems with Sirius Satellite Radio Reception--any advice?

Hello, I have been a Sirius subscriber for almost a year now. I have a stratus 5 plug and play radio that I had in my old ford explorer this past year, and the whole time it worked without a hitch. I had to sell my explorer at the end of the school year and bought a new car, a chevy aveo. I had the radio uninstalled from the explorer and about a week ago, I had it re-installed in the aveo. Right away I noticed it was having reception problems, the music would cut in and out and there was usually only one bar of reception. I figured this was because the guys at best buy installed the antenna inside my windshield, so I brought it back and had them put it on the roof, where they placed it right next to the edge of the roof. The reception did not get any better, so I brought it back again and they had me buy a new cradle, which did nothing. I checked a few websites and the installation manual, and they said that the antenna needed to be right in the middle of the roof, preferably on the back of the roof, where it had at least 3 inches of metal plane on all sides, and it said NOT to install it right next to the edge of the roof. However, the guys at the best buy installation center said this would make no difference and they install all satellite radio antennas on the edge of the roof like on my car. I am going to give them one more try and then if it doesnt work, I might have to cancel my subscription to Sirius, which would be a big disapointment. Does anyone know if moving the antenna to the middle of the roof like I have heard would really make that big of a difference in reception? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Sirius satellite radio problems. (west coast specific?)?

I live in Washington state. And I own a Sirius model S50 satellite radio receiver. I have my radio set to record the Howard Stern show every morning, from 3AM to 8:30AM. So when I wake up, I can listen to the show at my leisure. Since April of this year, I have had a problem with the recorded part of the show that airs between 3AM and 4AM. Large portions of the show are missing. It is like something is blocking my antenna reception. And it always happens in the same time frame every morning. There is nothing blocking the antenna. And it is located on top of my house. So there is nothing passing in front of the antenna either. The rest of the day, my reception is completely clear. What are the odds that this problem is caused by solar flares? I honestly can not think of any other reason why my reception is broken up at that time of the morning. Does anyone else living on the West Coast experience reception problems in the very early morning? more

Resolved Question: Electronics engineers, should I follow DSP or Communications.?

I'm getting my BS in electronics engineering right now but in a year I plan on going for my masters. Should I go for DSP or Communications. If you work in one field or another tell me what you do and reasons why you like it or not. Reason why I THINK I want to get into this stuff is because I like wireless communications in general. I'm a ham radio operator. I love building little transmitters and receivers nothing complicated. I would think building instruments for satellites, TV/radio antenna systems, radar, cellphones, etc. Anything wireless is amazing to me. I like the hardware aspect much more then the software but today I'm sure no matter what I'll be programming something. Anyways thanks for any advice. Thanks Mario, All the jobs that I bee looking for are looking for RF engineers. I wonder now if I can get hired there with a electronics engineering of BS. Well I'm gonna look and see if there are any master programs for RF then. more

Resolved Question: What is the best satellite radio antenna?

I have just bought (about 2 weeks ago), a Sirius Satellite Radio. For ten solid hours, after plugging it into current, all that the display showed (even with provided antenna) in my window, was "Acquiring Signal". Professional installers have told me that my living in an apartment building has nothing to do with the lack of signal, so long as the antenna is placed so it can see the sky. So far, three people have told me that my receiver is, probably, defective, and that I should return it. What I want to try, first, is the most powerful, amplified, antenna, that I can find. Would an extremely powerful, amplified, FM antenna aid my satellite radio in connecting with signals? Would the Terk FM-50 antenna work with this device, or should I go to a much more powerful antenna. I am considering a trade, with the store, where I bought this radio, but I also want to know if a powerful antenna would compensate for weak signals? Any suggestions? more

Voting Question: Why does my Sirius Satellite radio works with no subscription?

I have a Starmate 1 that I suspended service on in 2004 and know for certain that the subscription was canceled. I broke the antennae on my car and chose to just install the Sat Radio because I've gotten tired of all the commercials on radio. Anyway, put it in the car to test it out before I called and had the service reactivated and it worked, all the channels, perfectly. Does anyone know why this is? Did I just get lucky? more

Resolved Question: Can you help me with science!?

i have to do research on sputnik 1 and i found alot of facets...how could i reword this to where it sounds like i did it? On Oct. 4, 1957, Sputnik 1 successfully launched and entered Earth's orbit. Thus, began the space age. The successful launch shocked the world, giving the former Soviet Union the distinction of putting the first human-made object into space. The word 'Sputnik' originally meant 'fellow traveler,' but has become synonymous with 'satellite' in modern Russian. This historic image shows a technician putting the finishing touches on Sputnik 1, humanity's first artificial satellite. The pressurized sphere made of aluminum alloy had five primary scientific objectives: Test the method of placing an artificial satellite into Earth orbit; provide information on the density of the atmosphere by calculating its lifetime in orbit; test radio and optical methods of orbital tracking; determine the effects of radio wave propagation though the atmosphere; and, check principles of pressurization used on the satellites. Sputnik 1 was launched into earths orbit on October 4th 1957. It was the first man made satellite and was made by the Soviet Union. To put sputnik into space the soviets used a powerful rocket to launch it high above Earth and shoot it to the ground at a very high speed. It's primary purpose was to send back temperatures of space. It did so in the form of beeps. Sputnik weighed 405 lbs, and It's diameter is 23 inches across. Sputnik was in orbit around the earth for 3 months after it's launch in 1957. Then after it's 3 month journey in space it burned up in the atmosphere. It was a very big step that launched the space race. Immediate Results 1. The Americans were surprised at the launch of Sputnik. 2. Many Americans were mystified at and fearful of the prospect of a satellite in orbit. Some Americans began to doubt the American educational system, while others openly attacked it. Long-term Results 1. America put a greater emphasis on science and engineering in education. 2. The Americans tried extra hard to develop space technology. 3. The Americans and Russians began competing for better space technology. The "Space Race" started. 1. The United States and Union of Soviet Socialists Republic (USSR, now Russia) had been disagreeing on issues since 1917. 2. When World War II ended in 1945, the Cold War began. 3. The Cold War was not a real war, but only a fierce competition for military leadership; it was more political than anything else. 4. It developed after WWII between groups of Communist nations (lead by the USSR) and non-Communist nations (lead by the US). During the Cold War, distrust, suspicion and misunderstanding reigned between the two groups. 5. The US thought the USSR was trying to expand Communism throughout the world, and the USSR thought the US was practicing imperialism and attempting to stop revolutions in other countries. The Sputnik 1 spacecraft was the first artificial satellite successfully placed in orbit around the Earth and was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome at Tyuratam (370 km southwest of the small town of Baikonur) in Kazakhstan, then part of the former Soviet Union. The Russian word "Sputnik" means "companion" ("satellite" in the astronomical sense). In 1885 Konstantin Tsiolkovsky first described in his book, Dreams of Earth and Sky, how such a satellite could be launched into a low altitude orbit. It was the first in a series of four satellites as part of the Sputnik program of the former Soviet Union and was planned as a contribution to the International Geophysical Year (1957-1958). Three of these satellites (Sputnik 1, 2, and 3) reached Earth orbit. The Sputnik 1 satellite was a 58.0 cm-diameter aluminum sphere that carried four whip-like antennas that were 2.4-2.9 m long. The antennas looked like long "whiskers" pointing to one side. The spacecraft obtained data pertaining to the density of the upper layers of the atmosphere and the propagation of radio signals in the ionosphere. The instruments and electric power sources were housed in a sealed capsule and included transmitters operated at 20.005 and 40.002 MHz (about 15 and 7.5 m in wavelength), the emissions taking place in alternating groups of 0.3 s in duration. The downlink telemetry included data on temperatures inside and on the surface of the sphere. Since the sphere was filled with nitrogen under pressure, Sputnik 1 provided the first opportunity for meteoroid detection (no such events were reported), since losses in internal pressure due to meteoroid penetration of the outer surface would have been evident in the temperature data. The satellite transmitters operated for three weeks, until the on-board chemical batteries failed, and were monitored with intense interest around the world. The orbit of the then inactive satellite was later observed optically to decay 92 days after launch (January 4, 1958) after having completed about 14 more

Resolved Question: Problems with Kenwood Sirius Radio?

The Sirius unit turns on but stalls at the "Sirius" screen, beeps, goes blank, then shows the Sirius screen again. This cycle repeats as long as the power is turned on. Previously "Kenwood" appeared right after "Sirius" and then it connected to the satellite. This problem just started. Prior to last week, it worked without a problem for 3 years. The antenna is connected and shows a good signal. I've tried unplugging the unit, pushing other buttons, nothing works. Tried it on the indoor station as well as in the car, the same problem happens in both places. Thanks for any advice! more

Resolved Question: Received a Sirius satellite car radio for Christmas, is it worth it?

Okay so I was at one time interested in getting this, but sort of tuckered out. My girlfriend decided to get me one of the Sirius radios with a vehicle kit for Christmas and I did some research about how the company worked before signing up. Previously I had one of the FM transmitters for my iPod and it worked horribly...lots of static and never a clear reception. Obviously I don't want to use this and I don't have an Aux in input on my car stereo so I either have to get it directly wired to my FM Antenna or get a new head unit. Also I hear their service can be quite ridiculous when trying to sign up and that they like to sneak in hidden fees and have almost an absolutely horrid customer service department. I do drive often and would love to have something like this, but is it worth it? Anyone else have problems they'd like to share or such? more

Anyone have the same year make and model. and that has had or still has xm radio in the vehicle please let me know did you need to buy anything special besides the subscription. Thanks to all. more

Resolved Question: Why do the same people who *believe* in fairy tale of Man-made Global Warming deny that the Earth is flat?

The Earth is flat. That's why people use flat paper maps and not globes to get around every day. GPS displays are flat. Walk out of your door -- unless you live on a hill -- it's FLAT. You deny what you see every day and even how you directly experience the Earth. Yes, the Earth is a globe, but that's not important or useful in the daily life and business of just about everybody. The only one's that have to treat the Earth as a globe are airline pilots planning routes, people in charge of rockets, satellites and missiles, gunners calculating a ballistic ranges over 25 miles or so, radio antenna engineers and such. Well less than 0.2% of the population. Most astronomers treat the Earth as a mere point in space -- that's not the same as a globe. For everyday life on the surface of the Earth it is very accurate to call it flat. Everyday in all your actions your commutes, bike trips and walks you deal with it as flat with hills, yet you call it a globe! That's crazy! Yes, I can see why you Al Gore pod people were easy to fool about man-made global warming. more

Resolved Question: XM Service Renewal (in car)?

Resolved Question: Why did I suddenly lose satellite radio reception?

For months, I had great reception in my office building (in downtown Madison, WI), and also outside my building when I took walks with my Sirius Stiletto 100 using only the internal antenna. But starting last week, I lost all signal strength in the building, and outside it has become extremely choppy. But them I'm sitting here in my living room getting reception with the internal antenna. I live 10 miles from work, so there shouldn't be that much difference. In fact, if there's a ground signal repeater, I should get better reception downtown. The catch is that my subscription ends next week, and I don't want to renew if I can't get reception at work anymore. But then I don't want to be forced to cancel and be left wondering if it was just temporary. Any ideas? more

Will either one get me the same results or are they different somehow? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882172002&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle-_-Satellite+TV+-+Receivers+++Accessories-_-WINEGARD-_-82172002 http://www.buy.com/prod/motorola-cable-signal-booster-for-tv-cable-modem-digital-radio/q/loc/101/10412402.html more

Resolved Question: How do I activate SIRIUS on my Sync enabled Ford Edge?

I have a 2010 Ford Edge with SYNC and the media system with the screen. There is no satellite radio button, but in the settings there is a SIRIUS Radio ESN, and there is a factory installed SIRIUS antenna on the roof. In the "media" section of SYNC, there is the usual jukebox CD and line in, but no satellite radio option - how do I get it to show so I can use it? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: XM radio for a 2007 Lexus IS 250?

I just purchased a used 07 Lexus IS 250 and thought that it had satellite radio since the dash has a SAT option and the car has a fin antenna, but unfortunately it does not. I went to Best Buy to try to buy the equipment needed and they told me I would have to buy it from the dealership and it would run me close to $700. Is this correct? Are there any other available options? I loved my satellite radio in my old car and am already missing it!! Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Why do my tv channels have jumpy reception from 6:30 pm central time till 8:00 pm.?

I have a huge grounded rooftop antenna with rotator and radio shack amplifier. I get all of the channels that are possible for me to get, i am very pleased with the system. We spent a total of about 500 bucks and it's been about 2 years now. So we have saved well over a thousand dollars versus spending 60 bucks a month on satellite. K but from 6:30 till 8:00 the signal jumps from 0 to 100 erratically and I was wondering what da heck man? Please help, I will research anything you say so don't be afraid to use very technical and sophisticated words. more

Resolved Question: How can I increase the satellite strength in my Sirius Radio reception ?

It is for my house. I already bought a outdoor TERK antenna with 50 feet of cable which helped. But, whenever it rains, I get no reception. It is pointed in the right place and even talked with Sirius tech support. Does anybody have any tricks or things they did from personal experience. more

Resolved Question: How to get my portable Sirius radio to work at the gym?

I recently bought a Stiletto 2 Sirius portable satellite radio (i didn't read reviews beforehand, my admitted mistake). I am so frustrated with the service its ridiculous. I totally understand why Sirius is in the dumps. Anyway, I can't return the piece of sh*t so I figure I'll make the best of it. My problem is that I wanna use it in the gym. Obviously that can;t happen alone because its indoors. Does anyone know of an extension antenna or something I could by so that such a thing would be possible? more

Resolved Question: Will a Sirius XM Mirge radio work with a universal Sirius radio boombox?

I currently have a Sportster 5 playing on a Sirius universal boombox. If I get a mirge radio, will I be able to use it with the equipment I already have? I was also wondering if I would need to buy a new home antenna to pick up a signal from both Sirius and XM satellites. more

Resolved Question: Sirius Wireless FM Booster?

Hello. I'm looking for something like this that I can get in the states: http://satellite-radio-source.ca/store//catalog/product_info.php?products_id=300 The link above is sold in Canada and I dont believe I can get it shipped down here. Is there anything I can buy at a radio shack or something like that to boost my FM output for my sirius unit? The deck in my car has no AUX input in the front and I don't want to attempt to get access to the back. Also, my antenna is incorporated into the rear window, so I can't just remove it. Thank you! more

Resolved Question: How can I get my Sirius Satellite Radio to stop with the static and actually work?

I bought a BRAND NEW Starmate 5 Sirius Satellite radio today and after hooking it up and everything, all I get is static. I can hear the service a LITTLE bit if I turn my stereo up really loud. But let me give you a run down and maybe someone can help me 2002 Jeep Liberty Alpine 9857 Deck I have the Antenna on the back of my roof above the back hatch where it suggested I have it in the manual. I have the FM Booster on my windshield, next to my regular car antenna which is what the middle eastern customer service rep from Sirius said to put it. I have my radio set to a station where there is no active service, I also have my reciever synched to that station as well. Radio has been activated by Sirius, It was bought BRAND NEW from Best Buy today, all in original packaging. My Antenna shows full service on the display but I am just not hearing anything, why? Yes, my radio works fine normally, its a brand new deck. I had a Starmate 2 that I was using last night and it worked just fine, no issues but this one isn't working. I highly doubt I got a defective model, there has to be something I can before taking it back to the store, right? Any suggestions? more

Resolved Question: Satellite Radio For 2009 Toyota Tacoma?

I have a new 2009 Toyota Tacoma that came with a XM antenna, but not the free 3 month subscription. I read the owners manual and it said that XM requires XM tuner. The radio itself has a 6 disk changer and all that good stuff, but is that the tuner? Or do I have to buy a tuner? And also it says you must know the "radio id" to subscribe and it doesn't give detailed enough instructions to find it, how do I find the id? more
