Satellite Dish Radio Telescope Questions asked

Resolved Question: Making a radio telescope?

I'm an amateur astronomer with two reflecting telescopes which I love using. I've been reading into radio astronomy lately and I have two Direct TV satellite dishes on my house that are not being used. I was wondering if it's possible to modify them to eventually build my own radio telescope. I think it would be an awesome project for college next year. Any websites or book recommendations or suggestions are appreciated. I've already looked into The Society of amateur radio astronomers. I was looking for instruction on how to build a radio telescope. more

Resolved Question: Can someone check my science homework over?

So, I REALLY can't afford anymore bad grades. It seems that no matter how hard and long I research and check it over, I ALWAYS get bad scores. I'm not asking anyone to do anything for me - I did work, and I researched each question for hours. All I'm asking is you tell me what I got wrong, and explain to me why it's wrong. 1. When we see the light from Alpha Centauri, the star cluster closest to our solar system, we are seeing it as it looked A) 4.3 years in the past, because it is 4.3 light years away from Earth. B) 4,300 years in the past, because it is 4.3 light years away from Earth. C) the moment we looked at it, because space is a vacuum and light travels instantaneously. D) 4.3 seconds in the past, because it is 4.3 light years away from Earth. I said A 2. Early astronomers discovered Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn by close observation because A) there weren’t as many stars to block their view. B) the motion of planets varies compared to the motion of stars in sky. C) the telescope was invented in 1543. D) Both a and c are correct. I said B 3. That Mars appears to occasionally move in a retrograde direction with respect to the Earth is due to parallax. A) True B) False I said A 4. Stars are visible in the night sky because of the light they _________ while planets and their satellites or moons are visible due to the light they _________. A) emit; absorb B) reflect; emit C) emit; reflect D) emit; emit I said C 6. The dish on a radio telescope is a(n) ___ and functions very much like the mirror on a(n) _____ would. A) emitter; orbiting satellite B) receiver; orbiting satellite C) refractor; refracting telescope D) reflector; reflecting telescope I said D 7. Telescopes that must be placed in space because of the filtering effects of Earth’s atmosphere include A) reflectors, radio, and x-ray. B) only radio and x-ray. C) infrared, ultraviolet, and x-ray. D) refractors, radio, and x-ray. I said C 8. A space rocket has no need to carry oxygen with it, as space provides the combustion sustaining substance. A) True B) False I said B 9. The international space station was started A) in 1971 by the Soviet Union. B) when the United States launched the Skylab in 1973. C) when the Russians launched the Mir space station in 1998.
