Satellite Tv And Internet Service Questions asked

Resolved Question: We moved into a house with a Satellite dish on the roof. Can we use it without having to purchase cable TV?

Is there some way a satellite dish can be used without having to purchase services from a company? I want to do it legally, but do not want to pay the outrages fees companies charge for the service. Also can a satellite dish be used for internet purposes without having to purchase broadband? Thanks for your answers  more

Resolved Question: Wild Blue satellite internet - would you recommend it?

My mom lives in the middle of nowhere and cannot get any kind of internet except dial-up. She usually just calls me if she needs something Googled quickly because it would be quicker than signing on herself. She is thinking about getting Wild Blue internet service through Direct TV. I am trying to find out as much as I can about it before she signs on to a contract. She doesn't get online THAT much and doesn't need the absolute fastest internet service, but she needs something better than dial-up. I'm reading a lot about the service being unreliable in bad weather, and could someone explain the "upload limit" to me? How do you know when you have uploaded as much as you can without going over?  more

Resolved Question: Need legal advice on Satellite TV?

ok. there is an organization operating from a country in Europe which advertises to the customers in US for providing television programming to the people in US. After the customer signs up for the programming, company sends the customer a cable box. Customer plugs the box into their internet router and boom they can watch their native tv programming. Latest problems have been that, after a month or so later some of the tv networks are being taken off the programming and they are being replaced by some other channel. Possibility of a channel could be taken off programming was never mentioned when the customer signed up for the service. And that possibility is still not being mentioned on their website. When contacted, companys' response was that, "these things are bound to happen" ??? my question is that, why wasn't that mentioned before i signed up? and i get no answer. I live in New York state, should i contact the Attorney General and the FCC? This to me sounds nothing more than a bait and switch, they advertise that they are going to offer channel "A" but after a month or two later they remove that channel and replace it with some other channel that customer doesn't care for. Ben: What are you smoking? who is stealing cable? read the question first.  more

Resolved Question: Best way to watch TV online?

I got rid of cable recently because of the ridiculous cost. $138 per month for internet and cable TV.... but anyways im left with local channels and its driving me nuts. I have been scouring the web for a decent free online tv source but to no avail. I came across offering several satellite-PC TV services, each one for a one time fee of about $30. I am tempted to try it out but I am also hesitant to throw money at this totally unknown.... any advice???  more

Voting Question: Charter cable verses... anyone?

I have had Charter for my tv/internet/phone for 11 months. I pay for 5MB internet & have never gotten more than 1.5MB. I've complained several times. This time the guy upped my speed to just under 3MB (over the phone) & is sending a tech. Why couldn't they do that before now? On top of my OVERPAYING for service for almost a year, my bill is going to increase by around $50 next month. I considered switching to Comcast because I've never gotten good internet on DSL (I had dishnetwork/sprint). However, I've read many horror stories like, ( http://getsatisfaction.com/comcast/topics/i_think_ill_take_comcast_to_court ). Which is better? Is there a satellite company out there with good internet speed & reliability? Thanks so much for reading all this.  more

Resolved Question: Comcast, Dish or Direct tv?

I just moved in to my new home. No internet service or tv service yet. I want good service and good channels but not to pay a arm and a leg for it. i was thinking about getting comcast internet & digital cable for 59.99 for 12 months.. But theres not alot of tv channels in that package. Or i could go with dish..get 250 channels for 44.99..add HD for 10..add local channels for 5...add a room for 5 (i have 2 rooms i want service) for 64.99 i could have way more But then i would need internet...comcast is 42.99 if i can get it with the dish tv....or at & t is 35...but i dont know if its too slow..Im use to comcast.... I dont know much about direct tv tho..they do have a deal for alot of channels for 34.99... I need internet and tv channels...Looking to spend at the most around 105 for both and get a decent internet speed and more channels...not so much movie channels but just channels.... Thanks PS i hear rumors of the satellites messing up in rain or wind or snow...but then i hear they dont mess up also...Anyone experience alot of problems?  more

Resolved Question: ? regarding HDTV connections?

I just bought an LCD HDTV, (possibly) stupidly thinking that it would work if you had HD service, but that it would also work if you have just regular cable. However, there are no coax plug-ins on the tv (just an odd HDTV plug in, places for peripherals and you can use it as a computer monitor). So, am I stuck getting HD service? Can I get an HD DVR/satellite receiver to connect to the TV, but not order HD service. Is there a coax to HD converter cable? What are my options? This was not a cheap purchase and it was via the internet, so would cost a fortune to return the tv. The cheapest route from here would be to buy a HD DVR, but if I have to add in the cost of HD service, it would pretty much eliminate the savings of the tv.  more

Resolved Question: Has anyone had Sky Link hook up their Direct TV? I really got burned on this whole deal.?

See my profile and my other questions. September 11, 2008 Last week I called Direct TV for information about their program. I ended up ordering the service. The salesman messed up the order and accidentally cancelled the order, or so I thought. So he made up another order. I called back to ask a question, and there were two orders on file. We tried to get it all straightened out and they set a date for installation for September 8, 2008 between noon and 4pm. Technicians showed up at our house approximately 1pm and began installation. After about an hour the technician, named Vernon Larrabee, stated that he had all the equipment except a 6x8 connector on the truck. He said to call right then and get a new work order so he would be allowed to come back out the next day – he wanted me to speak with them right then so I called right then and received a new order number. The technicians through Sky Link assured me they would be back the next day. I called Direct TV and informed them of the problems we were having and they said they would try to resolve it. We called Tuesday afternoon 9-9-08 to Sky Link to see if they would be there and find out why they charged us $50. and when they might be back out to my house. Jeff, with Sky Link, assured me they would be out the following day 9-10-08 and that the technician would be dealt with regarding the $50. I also spoke with Direct TV again regarding the problems I was having and they assured me they would contact Sky Link and try to resolve the problem. Again, September 10th, 2008 in the afternoon I called Direct TV back telling them that the problem had not yet been resolved. I also informed them that we had been sitting home for 3 full days now waiting for them. September 11, 2008 I called Direct TV stating the problem had not been resolved and I wanted to cancel the service, which I did except they told there would be a four hundred and some charge against me-in addition to the two hundred and some already charged to me. I told them I had been sitting at home for 3 days now waiting for them to finish the installation and that I was very upset with Sky Link and we were going to have to return to work and couldn’t sit at home. I told them that we HAD called within the 1st 24 hours trying to resolve this issue and I should not be charged the four hundred plus dollars and the initial two hundred dollars I originally was charged by Direct TV. She said she could not guarantee that I would not be charged for this and that if I discontinued the internet connection I definitely would be charged the four hundred plus dollars. We cancelled only the Satellite TV service and continued the internet connection at $39. per month. She then told me that nobody would be coming to pick up the equipment, nor clean up the mess of wires that are all down the side of my house. After considering all of the above, I called back and spoke with Jason to cancel the cancellation and to see what could be done to rectify this situation with Sky Link. He told me he could credit my account $150. and call Sky Link while he put me on hold, which he did. He came back on to tell me he would call the local Sky Link office and put me on hold again. When he came back on the line, he said he got a recording at the local office and that he was going to notify his supervisor and forward this complaint to the main offices and that they took these complaints very seriously. He said he would reinstate my account at this time while I was on the phone with him. Also while on the phone with Jason at Direct TV he told me how to reset the system to get the correct time on my system due to the fact that since installation the time had been one hour off, it read one hour behind the actual time. He told me to press the red button on the HD DVR receiver, the one the time was off on, which I did. He stayed on the phone with me while the system reset. It reset correctly and at the bottom of the screen it said “authorization is about to expire”. I told Jason this and he said he would reset it there, which he did, and the note on the screen went off. He told me if Sky Link did not contact me by noon, now it is 10:45 which I told him, to call him back. At 12:15 Sky Link had still not contacted me so I called back and recorded the phone call. The call lasted 40 minutes. (all of the calls lasted at least this long) In the call this is what transpired: I tried to speak with Jason, but they were a call center and not from the same state. I spoke with Wally in TX and tried, again, to explain this situation and he said the order was cancelled. I asked why and he told me “it doesn’t say why” He also told me it was cancelled this morning. He said because it was cancelled they will not be able to do it today. I asked to speak with his supervisor and explained ALL of the above with her. She (Alma), too, said the order for the other 2 standard receivers was cancelled. She asked I have spent literally HOURS on the phone with customer service trying to get this mess straightened out. Some friends of mine just canceled their service also. WHAT A MESS!! I CURSE the day I ordered this. I REALLY got ripped off big time. me if I had the local number for Sky Link and I gave it to her. (I had previously looked up the local number) I again read back to her all of the original work order and gave her the work order number. (I have a copier in my house and had copied the original work order on the 8th when the technicians were here) She said they had everything except a “MULTISWITCH”? I told them I didn’t know, the technician just said some sort of connector. She verified the address again. She said “I can contact Sky Link but I don’t assure you that it will be able to be done today because I’m told that every truck is scheduled out. There’s nothing available for today. What I can do is if there is any cancellations, they can call you to go out”. I said “ this is why I originally called to cancel”. She said, “the first work order was right, which was cancelled”. (I didn’t cancel) She said “what I can do is resubmit the order and try to get with them to see what is the soonest they can get out t . There’s nothing available for today. What I can do is if there is any cancellations, they can call you to go out”. I said “ this is why I originally called to cancel”. She said, “the first work order was right, which was cancelled”. (I didn’t cancel) She said “what I can do is resubmit the order and try to get with them to see what is the soonest they can get out there for you to do it – to do it for you , to get the other 2 receivers – at no additional charge to you. Would it be OK to submit that order for you”. And she began to do this. She said the “ $150 is still credited to your account.” She then had me hold again to work on this order. She called Sky Link to see ”when they could do this for you”. She said they were to re route some orders to get to me as soon as possible. She (Alma) would call me back within the next 2 hours “I personally will call you to provide you with the time”. At 1:30 Jessica with Sky Link called to say they will install the other 2 rec At 1:30 Jessica with Sky Link called to say they will install the other 2 receivers noon to 4 on Monday the 15th. And she said they will put me on a cancellation list to get me in sooner. 4PM 9-11-08 - Direct TV supervisor called and said Monday Sky Link to install and if there is a cancellation they will install then. 4:30 9-11-08 – realized DVR not working “DVR service is not activated on your account”. Called and told Direct TV. They fixed it – OK now. They said and I said we are recording. I just had it on speaker phone with recorder on.  more

Resolved Question: What are the best cable/satellite TV and high speed internet providers in Pasadena, CA?

Hello everyone. I'm moving to Pasadena, CA (91101) from the Midwest toward the end of this month. In the Midwest, we have Charter for Internet and though the actual speed is great, the customer service and reliability has been an issue. We have Charter for regular cable TV as well, but we want to make the switch to HD service. How's satellite service (Dish Network or Direct TV) in the area? Thanks!  more

Resolved Question: I have a JVC model 48wp30 rear projection TV, should I get a blue ray player for it?

I went to Best Buy today asking some questions about blue ray players, the guy asked me if I had a HD ready TV, I told him yes. He then asked my if it was 720p or 1080p, I told him that I didn't know. He then asked if my TV was over a year old, I told him yes It was made in 2003. He said that more than likely it isn't compatible with blue ray and if it was then it wouldn't matter because I would need at least a 1080p to fully appreciate the blue ray player anyway. So I look up my JVC model number over the internet, the JVC website list it as a 1080i, I am assuming this means the same thing as a 1080p. So my questions are. Was this guy mistaking in estimating that anything over a year old is too old? How can I find out with absolute certainty if my TV is compatible with blue Ray players before I buy one (How do I find out the number of pixels I really have?) And finally if it is compatible will I be able to notice a difference or will it be like the guy at Best Buy said and I wouldn't notice a big difference unless I had a newer model TV? Just a side note, for about a month I subscribed to a HD service through my satellite company and was not really impressed enough to continue the service, but my TV did receive HD quality pictures.  more

Voting Question: How can I get comcast at my house when I don't have cable?

I recently moved into a location where we have satellite tv but no cable. The cable stops running up the street about a half of a mile down the way and I got in touch with comcast who said they couldn't give us Internet services without cable. How can I get cable up to my house so that I can receive comcast? Is there a rule called 'Must build' where you can see five rooftops from mine (in which case I can) that will constitute them running cable wires the rest of the half mile to my house? I desperately want comcast because I do more then my share of Internet usuage and will otherwise have to pay far too much (I also have a budget). I currently am using verizon Internet, but the limit I have of five gigs will not be sufficient seeing as four people share one interenet and too online streaming as well as games. I'm desperate for comcast and no other interenet.  more

Resolved Question: Cable TV/Internet Provider

I want to do away with my home phone (local service) and satellite tv (DirectTv) as they are both ridiculously high, I hardly look at tv and I don't use my home phone at all. That's over $150 per month for all three. I'm looking into getting cable so that I can also get internet without having to worry about home phone service. Mediacom has disappointed me and they haven't even come out to set up their service yet, Comcast and Cox don't seem to have any service in my area. Does anyone have a recommendation on a good provider? I live on the Alabama side of the Florida/Alabama line by Pensacola. WickedKitten: my local internet/phone service is Gulftel/CenturyTel. Resolved Question: How do I recieve FAST INTERNET service in my home?

I DO NOT have a home phone. I am sick of the poor speed of my air-card through Sprint. Also, I do not have CABLE TV, I have satellite (DISH), so I don't know if that will affect my options. I want something very fast. My speed test w/my air-card came back @ 370K, which I was told was not very fast at all. Thanks in advance.  more

Resolved Question: Looking for a new cell phone provider - leaving sprint. I have dish satellite tv & at&t internet/home phone.?

Do I get a discount from at&t on cellular service if I already have home at&t service and internet service? I have looked all over their website and can't seem to find an offered discount. I need a family plan with 3 lines and unlimited text. It seems that at&t is going to be more expensive than verizon. I am so confused and frustrated. Someone tell me which company to go with, please! Also, advise on a phone under $50 would be good, too. Thank you!!! Here is what I have found: 1. my current sprint = 2200 oops, I just messed up. 1. sprint = 2200 min, 3 lines, 300 text messages on 2 lines and unlimited on 3rd line, ins on all phones = $166/mo plus fees and taxes 2. verizon = 1400 minutes w/3 lines and all 3 have unlimited text messaging for $130 plus insurance costs and fees and taxes 3. at&t = 1400 rollover minutes, 3 lines = $100 plus an additional $20 per line for unlimited texts = $160 plus insurance costs and fees and taxes So, it seems verizon is the cheapest - but you all are saying it isn't. What am I missing?? Oh and verizon says no activation fee. At&t wants to charge activation fees for each phone!  more

Not as good as the american school but you can learn as much as in american schools. Universities are very good in Mexico. and are cheaper the american ones. Mexico is the only country in latin America that you can find good medical care if ur poor, similar to the ones in the USA. Mexico is consider to have first world country hospitals. Everything that USA has Mexico has. Im talking about things like malls, car dealerships, stores, pharmacies, everything and has the same services like house alarms, cell phones, tv cable and satellite, internet, land phone lines. And all this things are affordable to almost everyone . Mexico is the 12 economy of the world.  more

Voting Question: Best cable company?

I'm in the process of moving into an apartment located under someone's house. This only allows me the chance to get cable, and not satellite TV. I obviously can't put a huge antenna on someone else's house. I've tried getting in touch with Comcast twice--first, over the internet, but I was never contacted, and then by phone, but after I gave all my info and said I only wanted the cable, the guy on the other end pressured me in to getting the phone line as well, and subsequently hung up on me when I said I was going to confer with someone for some advice. My questions is: what is the best cable company (I have no choice, otherwise I would get satellite) with a good customer service record?  more

Resolved Question: How can I use my TiVo without connection either phone service or the Internet. Can I sill record programs?

I am considering switching from cable TV to Dish Network. The bundle I like comes with a 2-room DVR which will make my TiVo obsolete? Is there any way I can still use the TiVo to record some programming without being connected to either a phone line or the Internet. I'd like to keep my TiVo if there is some practical way to use it, but I certainly don't need to pay the monthly fee just to duplicate what the satellite bundle will provide with the new DVR. Has anyone else had experience with a similar switch between cable TV and satellite service. What did you do with your TiVo. Any suggestions will be appreciated.  more

Resolved Question: What is the best plan?

I have Verizon for home phone and high speed internet. I think I am getting ripped off. I pay 32.99 for internet and about 43 for mhy home phone. So my bill is roughly 80 bucks. I have long distance too but I don't use it and because I dontit is less than 6 a month it is too expensive since I can just use my cell phone and it is free. I plan on cancelling my long distance. I do need to keep the phone though since my satellite TV needs to be connected to it for updates. What plan do you have? How much do you pay? Is it reliable? Verizon does not go out often service and speed, connection... I have no complaints.  more

Resolved Question: I have been debating buying satellite internet?

There is no dsl or cable in my area. I have heard that there is something call fair access policy "FAP" that limits your bandwith with satellite service. Since I download alot of music and watch tv and videos online, is it possible to go over these limits? if so which has the best option as far as this limit. I have been told that i should go through a cell phone type hookup through my pc since ironicaly I have great cell phone service were i live. Do the cell phones have a simular FAP clause or extra charge on bandwith. I heard AT&T and Sprint doesnt, but verizon will bill you. By the way how fast is this cell phone card type service.  more

Resolved Question: Satellite TV w/indoor Micro Dish. I need information and know nothing about such a venture?

I want to find out all that I can about the possibility of getting Satallite TV with a very small dish, that could be set up inside of an apartment, cheaply. I know zip (0) about such things, or even if it's possible. Where I live we are not allowed to connect anything outside of our building. My space is very limited. I am wired for cable, but dislike my local Cable Co. immensly. I'd like to get rid of my cable service if I could. We don't have free TV in my city, and the only way to get TV is to buy cable service, or limited viewing on the Internet. Our local Cable Co. is a monopoly here. It's Cable, or nothing. Is there any other option? If so, I'd appreciate the information. If there is such a thing as a tiny dish, and it could be obtained at a cheap price, and the wiring of it could be done easily, please let me know. My funds are limited, so price is an important issue. I'm told a dish needs to face the south, and I have a large window facing the south. Please help!  more

Resolved Question: Live TV over the PC Software. Did anyone try this?

I received an advertisement in my e-mail today about this website http://official-downloading.net/livetv/ It claims: LiveTV’s software technology plugs you directly into hundreds of worldwide LIVE digital television channels right over the Internet. Enjoy more channels than cable and satellite TV combined for a one-time fee less than one month of either of those services. Has anyone tried this software? I have Veoh TV and I was wondering if this was the same thing or if it is better. Veoh only pulls in all sorts of Video Clips from different sources but you don't really connect to the station itself. It kind of sounds too good to be true so if anyone has tried this I would love to hear about it. There is not much info on their website which scares me a bit. Also can it be used on multiple computers? Thanks that is what I thought. I know I got screwed before paying $20 to download movies online when all it did was send me to website to download LimeWire and Kazaa, which I already had.  more

Resolved Question: DirecTV (or Dish Network) and Windows Media Center as DVR?

I want to use a PC with Windows Media Center as a DVR with my DirecTV service but am reading many conflicting opinions about this. Is it true that you can’t use Media Center with a satellite provider? Can you control a satellite receiver with a TV tuner card or is that only with Cable? Can you get the show schedules from the internet for DirecTV freely? What about HD channels? Thanks in advance.  more

Resolved Question: Can you have High Speed Cable internet (like comcast) and have Satellite Television (like Direct TV) services?

At the same time.. ? was just wondering this today because currently i have the Comcast package deal that gives you Cable, Internet, and Phone in one bill. But i'm moving soon, and was interested in trying Direct TV (satellite) 's services for Television, but i don't like satellite internet...... so was wondering if it is possible to have both cable internet, and satellite tv. or if there is a conflict with that.. i know this may sound like a really retarded question, but i've never had satellite so i don't really know much about it. If i can't have a combination then i wouldn't even bother doing satellite because i love High Speed Cable Internet, and only that. Thank you for your answers!  more

Resolved Question: Anyone tried the Geek Squad for wireless hookup on computer in your home? If so how do you rate their service?

We have done everything that was told to do along with following the instructions on the cd and still cannot get our wireless router to work with our satellite internet. We have Wild Blue Satellite internet. There is a dish mounted on our house just like the satellite tv dish but a little bigger. And we have a modem that sets next to the desktop computers tower and the modem right now is hooked to the computers tower and we get wonderful reception and we can surf at very fast speeds. But once again we tried to install the router so we could run another computer (wireless laptop) and we can get the router installed but it won't pick up the internet connection. It will say router has successfully been installed and checking for network and then it comes up and says "No internet connection" (and there is one.) We have done all the ip address and the other stuff that we were instructed to do and no go. It is getting very frustrating and we don't know what to do. Wondering about Geek Squad.  more

Resolved Question: Still slightly confused about bundle services?

I’ve checked out cheapest-services.com to get a comparison for tv, internet, and cable plans between various companies. Here's my situation. I'm a student holding two part-time jobs, one at school and the other online, while juggling between classes. My online business occasionally requires me to make weekend trips in search of merchandise, but what I’m trying to avoid is making purchases that will prove to be otherwise worthless and wind up as another “dead inventory” in sales. Two questions: 1) Are Broadband, Satellite, & Wireless service(s) one and the same definition of going “wi-fii”? AND 2) I need a good service where I can take my computer internet and calls wherever I go. Is it possible for me to apply for a completely Wireless package or am I doomed to be stuck with a Pay-As-You Go useless phone w/NO rollover minutes AND NO access to the internet or email(s) over my phone?  more

Resolved Question: Live streaming TV on laptop over wireless internet?

I don't have a TV. I have a laptop with a wireless internet broadband card (WWAN) and normally, i go to the websites of NBC, Fox, etc. to watch full episodes of certain TV shows. On my cellphone, there is a service by mobiTV that lets me watch live streaming TV channels on my cellphone. Is there a similar service that will let me watch live streaming TV channels so i can watch shows from NBC, Fox, CBS, etc. as if i was tuning in with a regular TV ?? I am not asking about a TV tuner card or slingbox. For both of those, you need to have a cable/satellite TV service at home. I don't have those. I take my laptop with me to work/home and i want to be able to watch live TV channels and shows on my laptop with my wireless internet card (WWAN)  more

Voting Question: Does it make any difference what kind of router I buy?

I am having satellite internet service installed this week through Dishnetwork. We have two computers in the house, and I understand we will require a router for the second computer to access the internet from the receiver. Does it matter what kind of router I buy? I know they vary greatly in price, but is that the only difference? My other concern is how are they going to install the dish? The dish for my tv is located on my roof, but they usually install them on a post on the ground. Seeing as it is winter here in Michigan, the ground is frozen and the snow is deep, how are they going to install the dish? Will they just install it next to the other on my roof? When I spoke to Dish, they weren't really sure, but said they really don't install on the home anymore if possible. Anyone know how they'll get it done? Thanks!  more

Resolved Question: Rogers in Alberta...?

Does Rogers have any plans to expand their Internet and Cable services into Alberta? I know they already have portable internet, but I was wondering if they have plans to launch their High-Speed Internet and Digital TV services in Alberta. They offer these services in Ontario already. When will they launch internet and digital cable in Alberta? Shaw offers absolutely garbage. Their internet sucks along with their cable. Telus has too many problems and I don't want satellite from Bell. So does anyone know when Rogers will offer High-Speed Internet and digital cable in Alberta?  more

Resolved Question: What are my options if I want to get satellite TV service?

We have a satellite dish and a receiver which we program at an office every time it goes down. They get their program from the internet, so I was wondering if I could do it myself. If not, are there any other ways of getting service from my dish? I'm in St. James and we don't get cable where I live. I live in Jamaica...I'm not sure if these answers are for here,..... are they?  more

Voting Question: How to make a ICS computer exactly and other things...?

so i have read on microsoft.com about how to set up a network...now is that all i need to do? just set up the network have the USB modem plugged in and run an ethernet cable out the back of my computer to a router? or is there more... and one last thing, i was wondering if by doing this im mainly getting internet for my PS3 to play online and i can only get either satellite but don't wanna pay for the tv so im getting a wireless phone service internet, and was just wondering if this will slow down the speed by running it through my computer to change the connection to ethernet ++++++ ok but im getting Alltel cuz i have the phone service with them and i have that crappy silver LG phone and it gets 5 bars of service in my room and i was told the modem gets an even better signal and the modem is not moving, but im just wondering if it will slow down by running it through my computer  more

Resolved Question: If a cable company provides both tv and cable internet. If one is available to an area is the other?

My satellite internet sucks and is only like 4-6mbs. I was thinking about switching to cable provided by newwave. The cable tv service is available here and so is their phone service. I haven't heard much on the internet other than it's better than what I have lol... so if cable tv is available shouldn't the internet be as well?  more
